SUNDAY HINDUSTAN TIMES, NEW DELHIAUGUST 23, 2020 hindustantimes 07

On the morning of 15th August, I watched as the Prime Minis-ter spoke of the government’sefforts to provide affordablesanitary napkins, emphasising

the importance of women’s health inhis Independence Day speech. It wasinspiring to see our country’s top leaderspeak freely about these issues, andattempt to make them mainstream inpublic discussion.

I continued to ponder over progressivethinking, and it struck me — it’s beenalmost a year since we lost dad. Whetherit was his lifelong support for implemen-tation of a Uniform Civil Code, staunchopposition to regressive personal laws orexemplary foresight of the importance ofskilling youth — he was undoubtedly themost visionary figure I knew.

You see, the world already knows ofArun Jaitley’s professional prowess. Weknow how he spoke, we know how heacted. I thus do not wish to eulogise himtoday, but to simply remember whatmade him, him.

And as the memories begin to flow, Iwrite not of the astute politician or lawyer— I write of the man who was my father…

He was forged in fire as a young man, imprisoned in 1975 as an ABVP karyak-arta for protesting against the Emer-gency imposed by Indira Gandhi. Thisstint in prison stayed with him forever, permanently impacting his health. How-ever, it never dented his spirit — insteadgiving him a steely resolve and an ironwill. Many friends he made in jailremained close to him till the end.

When I was young, he attended everyannual day and parent-teacher interac-tion at school. This was all the more spe-cial because he was at the time a partyworker, lawyer as well as India’s ASG(also tasked with investigating the Boforsscam). Though the country always camefirst, he never neglected his family. Festi-vals, birthdays, other essential engage-ments — he was there every time.Though at the time a senior minister inthe Modi government, he made time topersonally make all the arrangements formy wedding!

A firm believer in family values, hetalked of how elders had made us what we

were. As a society, it was thus our duty tobe there for them and give them their due.True to this ethos, he introduced severalbenefits in the 2018 budget such as hikingthe exemption limit on income from inter-est for senior citizens by five times.

He made it a point to never miss impor-tant occasions such as weddings or funer-als of friends and associates, no matterhow busy he was. This was true to theextent that even if there was somethinggoing on at our home, he’d still go for a bit.

One of dad’s interesting qualities wasthat he never forgot a face. He’d remem-ber everything about you, whether youmet him the next day or 20 years later!

He cared deeply for his employees, holding their dedicated service equallyresponsible for his success. As a senioradvocate, he created the Arun JaitleyClerkage Account to cater to their needs.Through this, he paid for the education oftheir children, which he undoubtedlyregarded as crucial to success. Some ofhis staff members’ children went toschool with me, and many are today suc-cessful professionals — having studied inreputed institutions such as New YorkUniversity and Newcastle University. With great delight, dad would often speakof their success — he even checked up onthese young men and women wheneverhe travelled to their cities. By the way, this clerkage account’s role didn’t endhere. It also paid for his staff’s houses andchildren’s weddings (Now don’t ask if dadattended, you know the answer!).

All my life, he made sure I took what-ever I got without expecting favours. When I began travelling for basketballtournaments, he instilled in me the valueof team spirit. Whether it was travellingby second-class trains or eating bad food— I was told to stick with my team with-out complaining! These values wereinstilled in me for every activity I did, andthey guide me well today.

And when it came down to it, dad prac-tised what he preached. At every partyworking committee meet over the years,he always stayed in the accommodationgiven by the party, though he could’veeasily afforded a five-star hotel. This wasdespite the health issues he faced later inhis life. However, he certainly preferred

good old Indian food and always tried tohave some wherever he travelled — be itFrance, America or Mexico.

When I opened my law firm, he couldhave gotten me many clients. But ArunJaitley did not disappoint! He said: ‘Ihelped you with an office, but don’t expectanything else from me… including cli-ents! If you depend on me, what will hap-pen when I’m not around?’

However, I must add that dad showedus both sides of the world — the fancy andthe simple. We’ve eaten at the best restau-rants, but the meals I’ve loved most werethose of roti sabzi, sitting at home as afamily. He gave us all the luxuries hecould. Our family went on some amazingholidays. I’ve watched Wimbledon live, including a heated Federer-Nadalencounter at Centre Court! I’ve also wit-nessed some memorable cricket matchesat stadiums. But honestly, nothing beatsitting on our living room sofa and fer-vently cheering for Sachin during India-Pakistan matches!

One might inquire: ‘Sonali, everyonethinks their father is amazing. Whatmade yours so unique?’ My answer: It’snot what he did, it’s how he did it. Dadwent about tasks in a way that often leftnewcomers in disbelief.

He could literally do 10 things at thesame time! Example? His evening rou-tine: Dinner, phone calls, replying to mes-sages, watching the news, having his sec-retary tell him the next day’s schedule…all at the same time. I’d say his top threeTV preferences were cricket, news andold Bollywood songs.

I’ve seen dad churn out some of his bestarticles while in boisterous conversationwith guests and clients. If I pointed themout to you today and told you the environ-ment in which they were written, youprobably wouldn’t believe me. Such wasthe agility of his mind!

Dad was not a career politician — hewas first a brilliant lawyer. His secretaryonce asked him why he entered politicswhen he could’ve raked in millionsthrough his practice. He just smiled andsaid: ‘Law is my profession, Politics is mypassion!’

It was this passion that gave my fatherthe rare ability to be equally comfortable

As a three-time MP from Gujarat, dadwas always concerned for the state’s well-being. In 2014, he adopted the villages ofKarnali, Pipaliya, Vadiya and Baglipuraunder the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojna.Over time, he worked to understand theissues faced by these villages, and subse-quently transformed them. He built abridge, a four-lane ring road, toilets inevery household, installed solar lightsand made a science lab for rural students— among many other reforms he intro-duced there.

Apart from these, he brought about sig-nificant changes in the fields closest to hisheart: health, education and cleanliness. But as I remember all he did, I must men-tion a regret dad had. He always wanted tohold the portfolio of health minister —and contribute to making healthcareaffordable and accessible (Though I’mcertain he’d be proud of all that Ayush-man Bharat has achieved in that regard).Lifelong, he held that our country’s doc-tors and nurses were the best. Whenadvised to travel to Singapore for a kidneytransplant, he didn’t — trusting Indiandoctors more. Dad’s admiration for medi-cal staff and health workers was tremen-dous, strengthened by his personal inter-actions. He often said doctors must berespected outright, for they gave it theirall to save us. While in the hospital, heexpressed sadness at how doctors weretreated — as he often came across news-paper reports on violence against medicalprofessionals. He told me that when bet-ter, he’d surely pursue legal measures toensure their safety. Sadly, that did notcome to pass.

In April ’20, PM Shri Narendra Modiji’s government approved an ordinance toensure stricter punishment for violenceagainst health workers. This would cer-tainly have made dad very, very happy!

The Kashmir issue too was close to hisheart, especially since he shared a deepand personal connection to the land. Arti-cle 370, he believed, was an impediment toprogress. In his last months, he regularlystudied J&K’s constitution to figure outthe perfect legal strategy to deal withArticle 370. And along with NarendraModi ji & Amit Shah ji, history was madewith its abrogation in August ’19! Theregion is now steadily on its way tobecoming an education and investmenthub, and I’m sure this is just the begin-ning! Dad had a truly outstanding visionfor this country, and though he will not bethere to witness its fruition, I hope to bethere to witness it for him. He wantedIndia to be equitable and just, with oppor-tunities in health, service and educationfor all. He wanted the youth to stand upand get involved, just like he did almosthalf a century ago. Let us aspire to takehis vision forward, and never stop tryingto bring about change.

As I end, saying that only I miss himwould be wrong — there are many acrossthis great nation who do... For ArunJaitley wasn’t just my father, he wasIndia’s son.

HTSPOTLIGHT ARUN JAITLEY

‘Not just my father, he was India’s son’A DAUGHTER REMEMBERS A day ahead of former Union minister Arun Jaitley’s death anniversary, lawyer Sonali Jaitley pens a tribute to the publicly unknown facets of her father

with both prominent public figures, aswell as ordinary people in remote villagesof India. Political differences never camein the way, for him friendship was para-mount, and cut sharply across ideologicallines. He was often known as the ‘Spirit ofthe Central Hall of Parliament’ — forthere, he used to sit and eloquently regaleeveryone (regardless of party) with inter-esting observations and anecdotes. Thiscamaraderie combined with keen negoti-ation skills (honed through his years oflegal practice) enabled him to uniteopposing blocs — aptly earning him thesobriquet ‘Troubleshooter of the Party’.

A great instance of this troubleshoot-ing was the passage of the GST Bill, whichtook all his consensus-building talents toensure full acceptance by all the partiesinvolved.

Though in my eyes, an event 17 yearsago really tested dad’s diplomatic skillsand brought them to the forefront — theWTO Cancún Ministerial Conference,2003. An incident during this conferencewas quite unforgettable: Around 100countries had formed a coalition for some

issues at Cancún. However, word soonspread that a key country was planning toopt out of this coalition. Then, dad got intoaction and quickly called a press confer-ence — where he ensured that this coun-try’s delegate was put in the media spot-light. Thoroughly basking in the atten-tion, the delegate quickly dropped theidea of leaving.

This was not the only tour de force hepulled off at Cancún. As minister of com-merce and industries, he took on devel-oped countries with determination toprotect India’s interests. Soon after, developing countries in WTO started togrow increasingly influential on mattersof trade, agriculture and investment! Dadbelieved in giving back & helping others,no matter when or where. One of his mostpowerful quotes is still with me — ‘It iseasy to be a politician, but a leader is onewho nurtures talent and creates futureleaders’. Many astute politicians todayregard him as an inspiration and guru-like figure. This makes me proud, as hesucceeded in doing what he alwaysbelieved in.
