Teachers: To give my literacy learners a solid base of vocabulary and concepts before attempting the Transit Windsor module, we first spent a week on Mursal on the Bus.

Because this material proved very easy, I decided to let them tackle Farid Takes the Bus, which is 22 pages long and has sentences up to nine words long. We spent a 4-day week and

Name: ________ Date: a 5-day week on this longer story while simultaneously getting into the Transit Windsor module. Each class before break was dedicated to Farid Takes the Bus, and the hour after break was spent learning the terms and concepts needed to be able to read two bus schedules and make sense of the system map. Enough Rider’s Guides for each student and one System Map for the class were obtained from the Windsor International Transit Station. Alternatively, you could simply print the PDF maps from the website.

The routine most days was for us to practice:1) listening: Which way is Detroit? Which way does the 2 bus go? Which way does the 8

bus go? Is the YMCA downtown? Where is Sandwich? What bus number is this? Is this schedule good for today? Why not?

2) speaking: Sit at “bus stop” and do a simple A/B role play in which one rider asks another if the bus is coming soon. One of them has a schedule or they look at the schedule posted in the vestibule.

3) reading: T gets Ss to open the Rider Guide to a particular page and then asks questions that require Ss to become familiar with the layout of information. Ss improve ability to scan for keywords like “WEEKDAYS” and “EASTBOUND.”

By the end of eight class days, we assessed those three skills and most passed easily, two passed “with help.” This group is CLB 1L adequate, just beginning to try more challenging material.
