IntroductionTetra Pak is a Swedish company specialising in the supplyof complete solutions for the processing, packaging anddistribution of food products. The branch in Modenacovers an area of 75,000 square foot metres (45,000 ofwhich are built-up), inside which over 850 employeeswork and which receives and plays host to around 1,000people every day.

In order to provide the employees with a calm, pleasantenvironment within the site, recreation areas were set uprequiring a constant power supply, perfect air-conditioning, ventilation and heating to guarantee themaximum level of comfort. Furthermore since it is acommercial branch, the same treatment is needed forcustomers, who must feel at ease and within an ultra-modern environment, reflecting the company’s spirit.

RequirementsTetra Pak wanted to find a solution which would enablegreater flexibility, ensuring that offices could becomeindependent and autonomous modules, each equippedwith their own systems and a system of environmentalmanagement which would include control of air quality,CO2, temperature and humidity.

On the basis of the initial scenario, it was thereforenecessary to find a solution capable of managing theHVAC and solar panel systems, lighting and air quality ofthe multi-use environments (offices, meeting rooms, eventhalls, etc.), taking into account the different times the areasare used, not forgetting attention to energy consumptionand general comfort.

SolutionIn order to meet the need for smart management of a pre-existing HVAC system and to guarantee optimum comfortfor employees and customers, the Tetra Pac centre inModena decided to become equipped with CentraLinehigh energy-efficient solutions by Honeywell. Inconsideration of the requirements and structure of thebuildings, the solution used is an integrated automationsystem capable of managing not only heatingrequirements but also the lighting systems of the building.These advanced systems are easily integrated withalready existing systems such as the lighting and securitysystems even if equipped with different brand products.

Marco Goldoni from Sistemi 3, Ingegneria e ArchitteturaSrl together with Design Studio Tekni Post, undertook theproject development, proposing the use of the CentraLinesupervision system, capable of managing a complexsystem with precise and mandatory requirements. Inorder to manage and allow the modular aspect andflexibility required by the purchaser, thus converting anoffice into a meeting room that could house from 2 to 10people or more, without jeopardising comfort, the systemwas oversized. This was done thanks to systems whichwork together, such as ceiling (or floor) heating/coolingand the chilled beam and air system for primary airmanagement.

The elitedali CEP (Certified elitedali partner) team in Italycomprising the companies Tecnogest Verona andCentraLine by Honeywell Italy in combination with theCentraLine Partner Sacir, carried out the first Italian projectof integrated light management in a building automationfield with elitedali AX solution of CNS Control-Network-Solutions. The system architect planned the use of aCentraLine HAWK controller capable of automaticallymanaging the switch on and dimming of lighting devicescommunicating on a Dali bus on the basis of the indicationof presence sensors and light meters placed on an existingbus with LonWorks communication. The AX integrationsolution with CNS elitedali for lighting further extends therange of Energy Saving solutions.

Customer valueThere have been many strong points in the installation,starting from installation of the platform to integration withthe pre-existing HVAC system allowing a continuoussolution, up to management of the lighting system. Thanksto the CentraLine by Honeywell platform and its simplifiedgraphic interface, the Tetra Pak Facility Manager can nowset all the set point details and all the other variablesnecessary for system operation quickly and immediately.

The employees are more at ease and as a result moreproductive if the work place has a quality ventilationsystem. In types of buildings like that of Tetra Pak inModena, an HVAC system without an integratedautomation platform, like the current one, recordedwastage, high costs and heating discomfort.
