Underground works demand expertknowledge in processing excavatedproducts, transported in the form ofslurry, as well as a perfect controlof the bentonite slurry regulationand the treatment of excess clay.In addition this has to be achieved, almost always in a limited availablespace, while taking into account urbanenvironment restrictions.
The Slurry Treatment Plants (STPs) for Slurry Shield Tunnel Boring Machinehave to conform to more and more stringent specifications :
from the geological point of view, the diversity and instability of terrains demandsan exceptionally flexible design, which in particular must enable rapid modificationsof the rheological characteristics of the slurry in terms of its density and viscosity.
from an ecological point of view, it is important to treat all the water and sludgeproduced. It must be entirely transformed into solid form to facilitate disposal andreduce transport cost.On sites such as Lefortovo Tunnels or the Groene Hart project, MS has risen to thischallenge by successfully developing complete Slurry Treatment Plants which havebeen in operation since the end of 2001.
founded in 1976, is now arecognized leader in Franceand Europe in sand processing, water recycling and sludge
pressing in two specific markets :• Quarries, Sand Pits and MineralIndustries • Slurry Treatment Plants for Slurry ShieldTunnel Boring Machines. In these two fields of activity, M.S.hasacquired this position thanks to :• a technical and experimental approach tothe problems, with its own Laboratory &pilot test bed and the development ofcomputer software simulating the differentprocesses,• a flexible and diversified range of taylordto specific needs equipment,M.S. has at its disposal a designdepartment, equipped with CAD unitsand one Automatism department. The M.S. line of equipment comprises :• sand washing and dewatering units, single or double cycloning type, • sifting-dewatering units, equipped withsieve bends or Cyclonic sifters, • customized hydraulic separation units, such as Fluidized Bed Sizers,• combined water recycling section, including the automatic preparation andinjection of the flocculant, the monitoringof concentrated sludge discharge,• automatic filter-presses transforming aliquid waste into solid cakes, MS designs, manufactures and ensures the start-up ofcomplete plants including the abovecomponents, and answering to specifictechnical constraints.

3.2.1.Scalping & Desanding section :
in the scalping section, we used either :trommels in sticky soils (clay, loess…)
to avoid clogging, while maintaining a lowerdilution of these fines,or :
high energy vibrating screens, in sandysoils, in order to keep a compact andmodular design.

3.1.Modular design :
To save erection time and to facilitate thereuse of a plant, MS has taken particularcare in the modular design of the differentsections, not only the desanding section, but aslo the filter-press section, as wellas pumping units and piping racks.
3.2.Description of the sections :
These STPs comprise 3 sections : > scalping/desanding/desilting> recycled mud management > excess mud management,

t
Our originality lies in having developed equipment and techniques specific to eachof these 3 sections :
in the desanding-desilting section, MS proposes completeplants with one, two or three stages of high-performancecyclones, depending on the geological type of bored soils. MS STPs are always designed for a specific job :from a conventional design we have now moved to monoblocmodular unit design.

3.2.2.Recycled Mud Management section :
As far as the Recycled Mud Management Section isconcerned, MS has developed and patented a monitoringsystem, designed to assure 4 essential functions : > maintaining the balance of the sludge volume, i.e.compensate any losses in the ground or elsewhere, > maintaining the balance of the solids, i.e. compensatingthe addition of excavated materials by adding water orfresh mud, in order to keep the desired density of theconveying slurry,> maintaining and adjusting the rheologic characteristics ofthe conveying slurry, according to the choice made by theoperator thanks to the information given by the rheometer(viscosities, densities & Yield value),> direct addition to P1 of a fresh specific mud for anyparticular need, for example to prepare a hyperbaricmaintenance operation.
The MS rheometer is fed by 4 samples of sludge :> desanded sludge from B2
> regenerated sludge from B1 > sludge returning to TBM, taken from B1-b> sludge coming from TBM, taken from B3.
Each sample is taken alternatively in a pumping tank fittedwith one centrifugal pump feeding one protection cyclone
and one automatic measuring system, analyzing : 1°) the density,
2°) the plastic & apparent viscosity,3°) the “Yield Value”
These data are stored by the PLC and displayed as graphson the supervision screen. Depending on the evolution of
these values, the operator choose the addition of freshbentonite, of polymer or water in order to maintain thedesired rheologic properties of the slurry. In automatic
mode, this system allows to maintain the set value.
