Referral and Assessment for Assistive Technology (RAAT)
The 4 Step Process
Step 1: Referral for Assistive Technology Assessment
• Varies according to school district• Post-referral, the IEP team meets to determine
whether steps are necessary• Referral should consider all prior and current
assessment data
Step 2: Conducting an Assistive Technology Assessment
• Generally completed by the Assistive Technology Specialist, the assessment is done with significant help from other IEP members
• May include: – Direct observation– Interviews– Formal assessment– Selected activities in predetermined environments
Step 3: The Individualized Education Program Team (IEP)
• The IEP Team which conducts AT device trials is a multidisciplinary team comprised of interested parties such as the following:– AT specialist– General education teacher– Special education teacher– Parents– School Psychologist– Physical and occupational therapists
Step 4: Implementation of the Assistive Technology Device
• Student, teachers, and parents, along with many other interested service personnel all assist the student with device accommodation and proficiency
