Reflection 6th

of July 2012

Reflective teacher consist of evaluating their performance as a teacher

against students performance and the impact that it hold on the students. It involves

teachers’ action and how it affects the students internally and mentally and also their behaviour inside and outside the school (Richards & Lockhart, 2007). Thus, this

reflection will help me to evaluate and assess my teaching and its effectiveness

especially in terms of classroom routine, classroom activity, and classroom

instruction.

A routine consists of predictable activities that form daily schedule. Teacher

need to make sure this take place in order to make sure it able to be implement in

the students. Therefore, one of the important points that I should try to maintain in

the classroom is their routine such as writing the day, date and title on the top of the

blackboard and also asking the students to put the bag on the floor like what their

teacher have practice since before. Nevertheless, today, I forgot to do this which

even though sometimes we view it as a simple thing, but because of this mishap, the

students thought it was not their requirement to put the bag on the floor and to write

the day and date in their book.

Besides, a weakness also can be found on my set induction stage activity. For

this stage, I ask the students what they remember from yesterday class and drill with

them orally the sentence structure. Even though it helps to prepare the students for

the next activity, it did not really serve the purpose of set induction. According to

Moore (2005, pg. 137), there are three main purpose for set induction; to get the

students undivided attention, arouse their interest, and establish a conceptual

framework for the information that follows. I should try to exploit and manipulate the

teaching aids that were present such as the variety of food. Thus, if I conduct the

same or quite similar activity, I will ask the students to close their eyes, give them a

taste of some of the food and ask them to guess the taste and the name of the food.

This will not only able to arouse their interest, it also helps them to relate and make

connection between this lesson with their prior knowledge. Therefore, I will try to

make sure the set induction that I conduct the next time able to fulfil all three

requirement of set induction.

In addition, base on my cooperating teacher’s report, I realise that I haven’t

provide the students with any worksheet or drilling activity at the end of the lesson.

This is important in order to help the students to see and really gasp that they have

learn something today, not just playing around. According to Piaget’s Cognitive

Development Theory, these students is still under Concrete Operational Stage. Even

though they already able to start to think logically, they still have some difficulty to

comprehend abstract thinking without the help of concrete object (Kipp & Shaffer,

2009). Therefore, worksheet can act as concrete object that help the students to

segmenting and plan their way of thinking.

Last, in terms of classroom instruction. During the production activity where

the students need to conduct a selling and buying situation, I realise that a more

detail instruction should be prepared and delivered. This is because, even though

the outcome able to be achieve as we can see that the students were fully

participate and the language taught were use, one of the students start to cry almost

at the end of the lesson as she taught that she should kept the fake money while the

rest selling the items. Therefore, she starts to cry when other students ask her to

hand over the money. Cameron (2010) mention that activity instruction that been

given should be short, detail, explicit, and easy to understand. This is to prevent anynegative circumstances to take place and to make sure the activity run smoothly

without mishap. Therefore, for next time, I will try to make sure my instruction have

cover all part of the process and in the same time write it on a big piece of paper and

paste it on the black board to make sure the students able to refer to it when needed.

As a conclusion, this process make me realise that I still have more to learn

especially in terms of planning and conducting my lesson and in giving classroom

instruction.
