PRAYER & WORSHIP

Reflection By Father James ~ May 3, 2020

What do you do when you are in trouble? The exact troubles vary, of course, and I am not asking you to think about

how you solve particular problems. I am suggesting that you take a look at how you get into the frame of mind in

which it becomes possible to solve problems. In the sense of settling the soul and focusing the mind, what do you

do when you are in trouble?

When I am disturbed or agitated, I like to do three things: violent exercise, historical reading, and singing Psalms. Of

these three, violent exercise has the most potential to cause problems in its own right (like something in your arm

going “pop”) On the other hand, of these three, singing Psalms is by far the most useful, praying to God in words

that God Himself gave us. Let’s focus today on singing (or reading - but possibly reading aloud) the Psalms.

The Psalms are the ancient hymns of Israel. They were written to be sung. The music has not come down to us, of

course (musical notation was basically invented by the 11th century Monk Guido of Arezzo), but the words have. The

People of Israel and the People of the Church affirm that these words are inspired by God Himself, words of prayer

given by the One to Whom we pray. As such, they are uniquely privileged words of prayer, and treated with the

greatest reverence by the Church. At very nearly every celebration of the holy Mass we have some verses from a

Psalm (very rarely, the “Responsorial Psalm” is taken from a canticle elsewhere in Scripture), and the Church’s official

daily prayer, the “Liturgy of the Hours” or “Divine Office” (from the Latin “Officium”, meaning “Duty”), is mainly

singing or reciting the Psalms.

Of the 150 Psalms, Psalms 3 through 72 were written nearly three thousand years ago by King David. In Psalms 42-

72, David sings to God in thanksgiving for his victories. In Psalms 3-41, however, David sings to God asking for help in

time of trouble. When I am in trouble (and recovering from violent exercise), I sing through Psalms 3-41.

In Psalms 3-41, King David expresses many emotions. There is, appropriately, thanksgiving for past benefits. There is

more lamentation about present troubles. Above all, there is trust that God will eventually do something to help

him with those troubles. It is in this section that we find this Sunday’s Responsorial Psalm, Psalm 23.

“The Lord is my Shepherd” is probably the best known of all the Psalms, and fittingly so. Aware of what the Lord has

done for him in the past, David sings “The Lord is my Shepherd! I shall not want; He makes me to lie down in the

green pastures” King David’s current situation is bad, but not hopeless. “Even though I walk through the valley of

the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me” With God,

declares David, he will walk through these troubles, and when the troubles are past the Lord will prepare a royal

banquet for him. “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil, my

cup overflows”

Three thousand years ago, this Psalm was about David, raised from being shepherd boy to King, being shepherded

by the Lord God Himself. Today this Psalm, particularly with its image of God providing a feast, is about us together,

as God’s holy Church. It can, and for now ought, be left to future scholars to sort through and evaluate the problems

caused by today’s famous Virus, and by the various responses to the Virus. For now it is enough simply to note that

we’ve got a mess on our hands, but in the midst of this mess the Lord is our Shepherd, and when this mess is over,

we will have a feast. The feast I speak of is the most Holy Eucharist. St. Ambrose, Bishop of Milan in the last years of

the 4th Century, told his congregation “How often you have heard Psalm 23 and not understood it! See how it is

applicable to the Heavenly Sacraments!” I say the same to you. Soon you will be able to gather, even in the middle

of the mess, for the Banquet of the Holy Eucharist. At this banquet, the Lord will anoint you with His Spirit, and your

cup will be the Chalice of Salvation, the all sufficient and overflowing Blood of Christ.

On that day, and even today, in anticipation, we sing “Surely good and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life,

and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever”

Spiritual Communion

Even if one cannot sacramentally

receive the Eucharist, everyone

should be aware of the practice of

making a spiritual communion.

Here is one traditional prayer:

O my Jesus, I believe that You are

in the Blessed Sacrament. I love

you above all things, and I desire

to receive you into my soul. Since

I cannot at this moment receive

you sacramentally, come at least

spiritually into my heart. I

embrace you as if you were

already there and unite myself

wholly to you. Never permit me to

be separated from you. Amen
