Dean's Message

Every Issue of “Reflections” is continuing with a new 'look' as well as a new feel from 'inside'. We announced in the last issue, that we would introduce in this issue a section on “Research Paper” and include two articles/research papers from the research scholars pursuing research in the Department. However, the permission to use ISSN was denied to us and hence we have dropped the idea.

For the “From the Archives” section introduced in the last issue, I request faculty in the Department and Colleges, our alumni and the retired faculty to contribute their collections, including valuable information on the foundation of Department of Commerce, rare material and pictures, group photos of M. Com batches, and material of historical significance. In the next issue, as suggested by the Editorial Advisory Board, we have plans to add a section on “Activities in Colleges”. Please send the material to email address: [email protected] or by post to our address (see back cover page), with a short description of the event and details about your association with the event.

If you wish to read the “Reflections” electronically, you can do so by clicking on our website www.commercedu.com.

Finally, I would like to thank every member of the editorial team for the cooperation and efforts shown during the past 12 months of my taking over as Head and Dean.

Sincerely,Prof J P SharmaHead and Dean

Editor Speak

There is a feeling of pride and pleasure in presenting before you this edition of Departmental Newsletter 'Reflections'. The activities compiled in this edition are diverse in nature, and reflect growth of the department.

The launch of Department Journal – “Journal of Commerce & Business Studies “during the Annual MIB-MHROD Convention held in the month of September, 2013 is one of the important event of this period. Along with other regular events, Department organised a lecture on 'How to prevent Heart Attack?' by the renowned Cardiologist Prof. Raman Puri. There is lot more in this edition, which I hope you will enjoy reading about, and especially the 'Archives' section. The section has more stories about the history of this department, and some rare pictures also.

Message from Associate Editor

It is imperative that an initiative taken in January 2013 as the Quarterly newsletter of Department of Commerce has been a successful endeavor and is gaining new paradigms with every new release. From successful M.Phil and Ph.D completion to new admissions in the research programs, from archives unfolding to launch of new rules and practices in department towards more coherent systems or the grand success of MIB and MHROD annual business convention "Erudition 2013", the elated growth of department is visible. The exuberant response to the HR symposia and special lectures evoked the business streaks in students. With the scintillating leadership, I wish to see many more phenomenal changes in the department and its entire operational environment to foster higher levels of intellect. Needless to say that the sheer hard-work of our editor is appreciable for the new and improved newsletter every time.

I wish good luck for all future endeavors.

Thanks

Dr. Sunaina Kanojia

Department of Commerce was created as separate university department in the year 1967. Eleven senior faculty members from main Economics stream were appointed at the Department of Commerce, of which two became Heads of Department of Commerce on rotational basis. These faculty members were in addition to the first Head of the Department, who was from Economics stream. A good number of teachers from main Economics stream, designated as 'Lecturers in Economics' were appointed in the Commerce Department of various colleges. With the introduction of rotational principle, Prof. R. S. Nigam took over as the second Head of Department. Till the time of the superannuation in 1990, Prof. R. S. Nigam was Head three times and also three times Director, DSE.

Over the years, particularly in last two decades, Department of Commerce has provided a big thrust to pre-doctoral (M.Phil) and doctoral work. Nearly one-third of the candidates and mostly college teachers, who did their doctorate work at Department of Commerce, are from pure Economics stream. These candidates are both from India and abroad and have earned international recognition for their research work. Even in the faculty of Management Studies some senior teachers had done their doctorate from the Department of Commerce. Professors and Readers of the Department of Commerce have earned excellent national and international recognition and appreciation in a big way. They have worked in a number of universities and inter-governmental organizations and institutions abroad.

Departmental ActivitiesthDay 1: Erudition'13- The 18 Annual Convention (MIB)

The students of MIB-MHROD, Department of Commerce, Delhi School of Economics thsuccessfully organized the 18th Annual Business Convention- 'Erudition 2013' on the 27 and

ththe 28 of September, 2013 at the Hotel Double Tree by Hilton, New Delhi with the theme “Business Sustainability: Emerging Realities”. This student – run initiative is organized every year to get an insight into the thought processes of the corporate and policy makers at large. Master of International Business and Master of Human Resource and Organizational Development are the two professional courses run by the department and have been universally accepted by the industry as specialized programs in the field of International Business and HRM.

Sustainability is becoming more and more important as markets become more volatile and thriving in this turbulent economic scenario becomes the ultimate goal for most organizations. The event was spread across two days, with three sessions on each day and a diverse and knowledgeable panel of speakers. The sessions addressed the bigger picture of the current economic and business scenario. They gave the faculty and students an opportunity to harness a vast pool of practical knowledge and revealed the nitty-gritties of the industry. Many companies are actively integrating sustainability principles into their businesses, and they are doing so by pursuing goals that go far beyond earlier concern for reputation management—for example, saving energy, developing green products, and retaining and motivating employees, all of which help companies capture value through growth and return on capital.

Erudition '13 was graced by the presence of eminent leaders in their specific domains like Prof.Dinesh Singh, Vice – Chancellor, Delhi University as the Chief Guest, Sh. Subodh Kumar, President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) as the guest of honour and Mr. Sumantra Sen, Founder & CEO, RIRA as the keynote speaker who inaugurated the event on the first day.

Departmental Activities

The first session on “Financial Pandemonium” was a theme that was very well explored by Prof. Rattan Sharma, the principal Director of a prominent B School in Delhi with a panel of experts like Mr. Manish Khandelwal from Indian Oil Co. Ltd. and Prof. J.D. Agarwal from the Indian Institute of Finance. They emphasized on the fact that the problem with banks, insurance companies, and other financial institutions that tout their commitment to sustainability by focusing on energy and water in their sustainability reporting is that these issues are simply not material to the sustainability of the institution itself. Thus this focus is not material to shareholders and a vast range of other stakeholders including employees, customers, counterparties, and society itself depend upon a stable financial services sector to create jobs and responsible economic growth. The session was concluded by the launch of “Finshastra” the annual magazine for the Finance Cell- MIB.

Departmental Activities

The next few hours were a perfect mix of strategic and technical rendezvous where the best from the corporate and the academia came together to discuss on various sub-themes. The session on "Next in Marketing" that focused on the need for the presence of brands in the digital space was moderated by Mr. Vijai Raghunathan, Partner at Cognizant. The panel consisted of experts from the areas of advertising and insurance too which gave the discussion a wider perspective. Mr. Sumit Sehgal, Head, Brand Marketing, Max Life Insurance and Mr Ashwini Dhingra, Senior VP, DDB Mudra Group were the other prominent speakers who graced the session. The new edition for “Brand I” presented by Marcom- The Marketing Cell was launched at the end of this session.

The final session of the day revolved around the “Geo-Political Stability”. The unrest that has plagued the world and how it ends up impacting businesses around the world. At this unique moment in history, every part of the globe is experiencing major political and economic change. The United States faces a formidable array of challenges to its leadership. Europe's unity is being put to the test, as the financial crisis has revealed cracks in the European Union's architecture. While China displays remarkable economic dynamism, it faces uncertainty about how Beijing will reconcile its political system with market capitalism and address increasing stratification. Countries across the Middle East and North Africa are in a state of political upheaval that has had ripple effects in the energy markets and prompted concerns about the stability of the entire region. The session was chaired by Mr. Rajiv Bajaj, CFO – Panasonic India and the panel consisted of Mr. Akhil Prasad, Country Counsel for Boeing International Corp. , Mr. Manoj Madhusudan, Global Head of Operations for Evalueserve and Mr. R. K. Sharma, Head (Exports), Nestle India. The session concluded with the launch of Vishwavyapar- the E-magazine presented by IB Cell- MIB, Department of Commerce.

MIB Port Visit

Post-Graduate Examinations

A special lecture was organized by Department for M.Phil/Ph.D scholars on “Understanding New Companies Bill” by Head & Dean

stProf. J.P. Sharma on 21 August, 2013. Dozens of research scholars and faculty members participated in the same. The Head & Dean discussed about the history and amendments in the Companies Bill from time to time and also provided with the useful information regarding the importance and contents of New Companies Bill. An interaction with the research scholars followed, wherein they got a chance to discuss and clarify their queries.

Logistics and EXIM procedures and documentation being an integral part of the MIB curriculum, the port visit is a special event for the students of MIB. This was organized by Team IISAC (Industry Interaction and Student Activity Committee). Students gain a practical insight into the areas of warehousing, packaging, etc., and are able to understand the operational aspects of sea ports, dry ports, free trade zones, etc. through a hands-on experience. Besides port visit, regular Industrial visits are also organized by the college. Visits like these provide an opportunity to have hands on learning experience to the students where the theoretical concepts can be applied to the real time situations. The result is a dynamic and productive classroom experience that engages the students in a 'proactive' learning process.

First and third semester post graduate examinations for the courses Masters of Commerce (M.Com), Masters of International Business (MIB) and Masters of Human Resource and Organizational Development (MHROD) were successfully held in the Department of Commerce

were given a case on the spot and written solutions were taken after 90 minutes. The first case was about “How a smart turnaround strategy helped Havell's to make a comeback”. It talked about the strategies followed by Havell's in order to turnaround the acquired businesses. The responses were evaluated with the help of our faculty member Ms Deepali Malhotra. Five teams

thqualified for the final round which was held on 19 September 2013.

The case for the final round was circulated to the qualifying teams three days prior to the event date. The final case was about the Haagen Dazs success story in China and challenged the teams to emulate the similar success story in India. The teams were required to present their solutions in a fifteen minute time limit to an esteemed panel of judges which consisted of International Business experts from the faculty - Ms Abha Shukla, Dr Niti Bhasin and Ms Deepali Malhotra.

The competition had wonderful analysis of the Chinese and Indian markets as well as the strategies of Haagen Dazs. Some innovative ideas and suggestion of alternatives also came up during the course of the final round. Finally, based on several criterion like critical analysis of the case, innovation in suggestion of the alternatives, the winning team was announced. The members of the winning team were Nikhil Bhatia, Kamal Manshani and Jatin Sharma. The team was awarded a cash prize of Rs 1000.

The competition was tough and it was very difficult for the judges to reach a conclusion for the runners up position. Eventually, two teams shared the runners up spot. The members of runners up teams were

Ÿ Vipulansh Sharma, Piyush Bagga, Akash Garg,

Ÿ Malvika Garg, Harsh Parashar, Prashansa Gupta

The judges appreciated the work of all the contestants and gave valuable insights to help the students improve their levels further. The cases for both the rounds and their winning solutions are available on the FaceBook page of International Business Cell.

Business Thought Leadership Program-Vedanta

Series of Guest Lectures

Mr. Ajoy Shah-J K Tyre

The students of MIB and MHROD had the privilege to be a part of the Business Thought Leadership Program- an interactive session with Mr. Anil Aggarwal, Founder & Executive Chairman, Vedanta Resources. The session began with a short video clip on the story Vedanta Resources and its founder Mr. Aggarwal. From a modest background in Bihar to Mumbai, London and now a presence across the world, the journey was nothing short of inspirational. He then addressed the audience and shared with them the experiences of his life and simple mantras of success he follows. With his views on India's bright future, his belief in giving back to the society, and stress on values in life, he captivated the interest of audience. His simplicity and humility managed to strike a chord with the students. A visionary leader, Mr. Aggarwal's life is the perfect example of how there's no substitute for hard work and determination, to achieve success.

Mr. Aggarwal talked about the transformational potential of India's resource sector. He stressed on the need and importance of untapping the natural resources that our country possessed which will boost the revenues for the government and ultimately empower the people.

Finally, Mr. Aggarwal shared three basic lessons for the students-“NEVER miss a chance; DO it today; ALWAYS remain hungry”. An interaction with the audience followed, wherein the students got a chance to discuss and clarify their queries.

The session provided the students with much relevant and useful information in a simple yet comprehensive manner. It was a great learning experience for the students.

A volatile and uncertain world with rapid changes in the economic scenario and swift swings in consumer demand poses new challenges for marketers, said Mr. Ajoy Shah, Deputy General Manager (training) at JK Tyre.

The talk on the 'Challenges for New Age Marketing', was part of a series organised under the aegis of the Business Line Club, a campus initiative of The Hindu Business Line, which aims to deepen connectivity between industry and academia, and provide students an opportunity to hear and interact with industry professionals in various fields.

Pointing out that modern companies operate in a 'VUCA' world – a term originally coined by the US Army and an acronym for 'volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous' – Mr. Shah said that

marketers today need to anticipate demand shifts rather than react to them. Listing the key issues faced by marketers today, he said consumers were becoming increasingly tougher to influence, and with an active Internet and social media “the truth about anything is getting harder to hide.”

Mr. Sourav Das, DGM, Corporate Affairs of Cairn India, spoke about Cairn's role in the energy ecosystem of the country, and the challenges posed by rising energy demand and surging prices. He provided valuable insights on sustainable use of energy and growing concern about India's growing energy consumption needs.

Business Strategy in the age of sustainability will perhaps challenge the way we understand the role of the corporation in society, and may help reinforce or even accelerate the current socia l and environmental trends and expectations that we, as a society, place on organisations.

The guest lecture was a great learning experience for the students. Special thanks to Team IISAC who organised the lecture.

“Post the global crisis, financial sector regulators and policy makers have been focusing on the objective of 'financial stability' to bring back sanity and normalcy to the global financial system. That financial inclusion, financial education and consumer protection, form the three essential pillars on which financial stability rests, has been universally endorsed and accepted. Banking the unbanked, providing accesses to financial services, educating the consumers and creating a sense of safety in their minds, are necessary for the governments and regulators alike.”

- Dr. K. C. Chakrabarty, Deputy Governor, RBI.

MIBians had the opportunity to attend an informative session on banking & finance, encompassing the consumer-oriented aspects of financial literacy, organized by the Finance

thCell on 11 September 2013. The guest speaker was Dr. G. Mallikarjun. He has completed twenty years in RBI making significant contributions in the areas of banking supervision, currency management, financial regulation, public debt management, management of government accounts. Currently he is serving as OSD (Grievances), Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority, Hyderabad.

Dr. Mallikarjun started the talk with a brief about the multiple roles of Reserve Bank of India as the central banking institution of the country. He threw light on the main functions and objectives of RBI as the monetary authority, regulator and supervisor of the financial system, manager of foreign exchange, issuer of currency, and as banker to the government and banker to banks. He also elaborated on the relationship between the Reserve Bank of India and the Central Government of the country.

The speaker stressed on the need and importance of financial literacy and consumer awareness among the citizens. He further went on to explain relevant financial terms and issues

which we come across in our day to day life. With increasing cases of financial identity theft, he stated the importance of protecting one's banking details. The current economic scenario was also discussed. An interaction with the audience followed, wherein the students got a chance to discuss and clarify their queries.

The session with Dr. Mallikarjun provided with much relevant and useful information regarding the financial system in India, in a simple yet comprehensive manner.

MHROD Batch 2013-15 had its first interaction with corporate leader and distinguished alumnus thMr. Avadesh Dixit (Batch of 1999), Head- HR, CMC Limited on August 13 , 2013. As a seasoned

HR professional, Mr. Avadesh Dixit has served in managerial capacity at both home and global level. His area of specialization/interest is International Human Resource Management.

He is a recipient of “Distinguished Alumni Award” presented by Faculty of Commerce and Business, University of Delhi, for outstanding achievement in the field of HR.

The beginning of session saw Mr. Dixit speak with exuberance on MHROD having finally 'arrived' and how the Alumni base is contributing in its own way to shore up the MHROD brand name.

The address to students was replete with practical examples from his work and professional journey so far, thus engaging everyone present. The speaker provided useful insights into the field of HR as he shared his erudite views with students from both the batches.

Throughout the interactive session that it was, emphasis was laid on the importance of Summer Internship Project (SIP) and some of the fields essential for HR function like 'Business Statistics and Research Methodology'. While SIP would give one a first-hand experience of what the corporate world entails, a good hold on business statistics goes a long way in helping analyze complex corporate statistical data; both equally vital for decision-making.

Mr. Dixit highlighted the importance of time and its efficient utilization for a B-School student. Engaging in parallel learning by following latest trends in every sphere, apart from working on theoretical concepts, is a must. Networking, understandably, forms the crux of any management education, and hence, more inter-college participation.

He also shared his views on handling workplace politics and its significance; how it is vital to pay attention to the organizational politics and create a right political landscape and how the connoisseurs of business management utilize it the right way.

The Team Alumni of M.H.R.O.D. held its annual Alumni Meet 2013 Delhi chapter on August 24, 2013 wherein the junior batch got the opportunity to interact and reach out to the esteemed and notable Alumni working at the creditable echelon in the field of HR in corporate organisations.

The Chapter Meet is being trysted by the Team Alumni to make the junior batch help embark on their corporate odyssey. At this stage, junior batch is going through all kinds of alacrity, consternations. And the averments from Alumni are the best anodyne for the posterity since the Alumni can very well take the pulse of the junior batches.

The Chapter Meet started with an introduction from Mr Omar Farooq (Batch 1998), CEO at Ace ProHR and Visiting Faculty at Delhi School of Economics. He shared his experience on how he has brought some remarkable changes during his 7 year tenure in ATS Services Private Ltd., while he worked as a Business Manager and Head Human Resource. He reminisced about his

efforts in launching “JIGYASA”, the annual Journal of Human Resource and Organizational Development, which was then a 14 page pamphlet. A veritable elaboration on the importance of being expert in one's realm was made by him. He discouraged mediocrity as wastage of time. Mr Farooq kindled the students to work hard and seek the acme.

Next, they had an enthralling session with the Alumni Mr Rishi Raj Gupta (Batch 2005), Manager at Accenture Management Consulting, who guided them as to how to tap the advantage of being at a strategic place as diverse as North Campus where the libraries from various other departments can be outreached. He recommended the junior batch with various tips for Summer Internship project (SIP). An exercise was conducted by Mr Rishi with the batch where every student was told to jot down on one side of board the skills they want to achieve & the skills possessed followed by an elaboration over this talent management task. On this, Mr Vivek Mukherjee (Batch 2004), General Manager and Head- Corporate HR at Benetton India Private Ltd. propounded that a Mentor – Mentee relationship can be made in the batch as well. He talked about on the USP of M.H.R.O.D. course which is the initiative taken by the students in the various committees under SPHERE. Ms Piyu Jagia (Batch 2012), Management Trainee HR at Indus Towers Ltd. detailed on the significance and exposure associated with participating in as much B-School competitions as possible. She underscored the importance of remaining united as a batch and discouraged competition within the batch. Mr Kushal Dubey (Batch 2012), Business Analyst, Human Capital at Deloitte Consulting along with Ms Piyu explained the importance of maintaining a strong and cordial connect with the alumni.

Mr Vaibhav Sharma (Batch 2009), Senior Consultant- Strategy and Operations at Deloitte, expounded on building one's own measure of success and on the potential of the confidence in sailing one to the meridian of career.

Ms. Balpreet Kaur (Batch 2010), Manager HR at Times Internet Ltd. stressed on the advantages Live Project has for an MBA student. She shared her experiences of Live Project during her two year stint in the M.H.R.O.D. and advised the junior batch to actively work upon them.

Mr. Sandeep Malhotra (Batch 2009), Personnel Officer at Power Grid Corporation of India Private Ltd. talked about the career and opportunities in PSUs. While answering the questions put forth by junior batch on various aspects of PSUs, he highlighted about the work – life balance which is inclusive at PSUs. Mr. Sandeep also briefed on his experience on engagement with CSR activities at Power Grid. He carved out the leverage of possessing flexible goals over fixed goals. He opined that rather than stereotyping a person blindly it is better to keep the eyes and ears open for the opportunities since the former may bear consequences.

The meet lasted for around 6 hours. The experiences and homilies shared by the Alum mitigated perplexities in the mind of junior batches regarding their step towards subsuming in corporate life. M.H.R.O.D. thanks the notable Alumni for interacting and kindling confidence in the junior batch.

HR SYMPOSIA '13- HR: Beyond Boundries

Delhi School of Economics (DSE) came to the spotlight yet again when the HR department th thsuccessfully conducted its annual HR Symposia from 25 -26 November 2013. The annual HR

Symposia coordinated by the SDC (Student Development Cell) Committee of MHROD was based on the theme –“HR: Beyond Boundaries”. The event which went for 3 days was meant to supplement students with a 3 course meal of practical corporate cognitive insights from top-notch Corporate Honchos from HR start-ups like 'Salto Dee Fe' to Healthcare giants like 'Fortis Healthcare Ltd'. All the sessions in the event were interactive where students got their queries answered from the speakers and at moments speakers gained some theoretical advancements in the dynamic field of Human Resources from the students which served as Quid Pro Quo for both the parties.

Day 1

The exordium of the event was done by Mr. Rajan Kalia (Co-Founder, Salto Dee Fe) who runs a Business Enabling Firm which helps organizations to leapfrog their business to next phase of growth and generate value for all the stake-holders. He spoke on the topic-“Multi-Rater Performance Appraisal” also known as 360-degree feedback which is a trending performance management /evaluation tool in HR. He talked about the evolution of this system and how it can prognosticate an employee’s performance and help in final performance appraisal. He talked about various aspects of this tool like how it can drive a person's development efforts, careful planning and communication needed in using this tool and some significant merits and demerits in using this tool. He also gave some practical examples from corporate sector where 360-degree feedback is a part of employee performance evaluation.

The second session of the day was on the topic: - “Emotional Intelligence edge and your Success” which was enlightened by Mr. Sanjay Mitra (Global OD head and VP-HR, Global Logic) who along with his team is involved in Global Talent Management ,coaching some of the senior members and instituting a system of 'Mentoring' for 'Rare' and 'High-End' skills. He touched various perspectives on how the dynamics of emotional intelligence quotient (EQ) can help you grow at personal and professional level. He focused on how organizations judge the 'Fitment' of a potential candidate by taking a note of his/her EQ rather than focusing on his/her IQ and relevant technical skills. He bottle-necked the enigma of EQ to some significant competencies likes Self-Awareness, Empathy, Impulse Control and Optimism and gave corporate links to how business leaders with high EQ are more successful in hiring, managing, leading and mentoring others.

The concluding session of the day was on “Issues and challenges in managing global workforce” which was incisively illuminated by Mr. Ashit Ranjan (VP-HR, Technova India Pvt. ltd.), a Human Resource Professional with 19 years of international experience of Strategic HR management, Performance Management and Training and Development in India, United States, Bhutan and Bangladesh. He shared his personal experiences on how the cultural diversity in the workplace can affect an individual's personal and professional growth and how to tackle these situations in a global environment. He quoted numerous examples of HR policies, Industrial laws, Labour Laws and interview demeanour practiced in different countries and how one has to effectively acclimatise with these changing scenarios.

Day2

The second day of the symposia began with a much deeper HR perspective on Compensation v/s Competency which was presided over by Mr. Rajiv Kapoor (Chief People Officer, Fortis Healthcare) who has 11 year experience in JCB India Ltd in HR and Legal Domain. A much of a

theoretical topic which was indeed needed to be redefined by an industry expert as Competency Management is an important Strategic area of an Organization. The speaker focussed on how the traditional compensation system often fails to differentiate between different individuals whose performance levels may vary and how sometimes it fails to recognize better performers. The alternative being Competency based Compensation system which can help the organizations to measure actual job performance.

The final discussion of the day was on HR- Data and Analyst which was lectured by Mr. Tarun Dua (Associate Director, HRD and Training, Country Development & Management Services Pvt. Ltd.). The discussion was focussed on the effective use of MIS (Management Information System) in different Businesses especially in Hotel Management and the role of HR analyst. The discussion also brought to the light the versatility of Human Resource Management System and its relation to the MIS used in Hospitality Industry.

Day 3

The final and concluding day of the HR Symposia'13 began with the most awaited Panel Discussion on Role of HR- Mergers and Acquisitions. The imminent speakers for the discussion were Mr. Abhay Kapoor (AVP- Corporate HR & ER, Escorts Ltd.), Mr. Ranji Abraham (Director Human Resources, India at Delphi Auto Ltd.) and Mr. Madhur Mehta (Director HR, Make My Trip).

Mergers and Acquisitions are the most critical phases of business and it is imperative that everyone involved in the process should have a clear understanding of the process and its outcomes. The panel discussion focused on how the HR as one of the most valued person in this process acts as a change agent and must have a firm grasp on the culture of the company for which they work for and must study the culture of the other organization, so that he may be proactive in avoiding any cultural differences in the process and after the process. The coordinated efforts of Human Resource Department of both the organizations can smooth out the transition for employees. The discussion also focused on the importance of Emotional Intelligence in this process.

Summing up, the whole 3 day event was successful in its purpose of bridging the gap between theoretical and practical aspects of HR and giving a kick-start to the thought process of the students before entering the real corporate.

Fresher Party: MIB

Fresher Party: MHROD

After a hectic schedule, which included classes that lasted for hours, rigorous induction processes and interviews, the fresher's party was a welcome respite, much like the Delhi rains. Quite aptly themed 'Al Fresco Summer', the party came as a breath of fresh air. It had all the elements that go into making an exciting summer party—vibrancy, fun, laughter, foot-tapping music, good food and above all, some great bonding.

The event began with a welcome note from the Dean, Prof. J. P. Sharma and the esteemed faculty. This was followed by a series of very entertaining activities. The first round comprising of

fun games put for testing the creative minds, and also worked as a great ice-breaker (or what remained of the ice, anyway). A delectable lunch was then served. As the party progressed, the tasks and challenges set for the freshers only got wackier. Both juniors and seniors alike enjoyed to the fullest. After the rounds of activities, the winners of the Mr. and Ms. Fresher titles were declared. The party ended with everybody shaking a leg and dancing like there was no t o m o r r o w. S o m e w o n d e r f u l memories were created and perfectly captured.

It was a day for the RETRO themed Fresher's Party. A stage was set for the Dev Anands and the Zeenat Amans, the Rajesh Khannas and the Dimple Kapadias to emerge from the memories of the past and not to forget the return of Ranjeet.

It wasn't a dress up and come kind of invitation. The fun and exciting part was added to it by the seniors since the juniors were supposed to make certain arrangements and those who failed were put in the Red Zone. The fun began with some very exciting performances: Ballet dance, a self-composed solo song, Boliyaan , poem by the students from fresher batch but the pick of the day was one melodious song sung by Mr. Sameer Lama, Faculty, Department of Commerce.

The fillers by the seniors redefined Devdas parlance. They added to the flow of the show. Everybody had their share of fun in the games and tasks. All the contenders for Mr./Miss fresher competition performed awesomely. And thus a wonderful event came to a conclusion with a bash.

Fresher Party: M.Com

It was a soothing September morning when the department of commerce was enthusiastic and fully prepared to welcome the batch of M.com students, 2013-2015 with a bang! The annual freshers' party, themed “Disco v/s Geek,” proved to be the perfect ice breaker that all had been looking for.

Students attired in the chic Disco and cool Geeky avatars. The celebration started sharp at 1:00 pm. with the opening Medley followed by the welcome address by Dr. Sunaina Kanojia, Coordinator M.Com, and other faculty members. The race to the Mr. and Ms. Fresher title brought to surface, the latent talents of the high potential tyros, be it the stylish ramp walk, mimickers, unique dancing moves and melodious singing. The competition was split in two major rounds; Round 1 was 'ramp walk', where participants introduced themselves in their own peculiar style. Those who qualified moved to round 2, which was a 'talent' round. In between the rounds, we had a plethora of performances by juniors and seniors together. One such was a special Sri Lankan dance that enticed all the spectators.

The highlight of the day was a song “Ni main jhooth boliya …koi na”, sung by Prof. K.V. Bhanu Murthy, which garnered great admiration from the students and teachers. After the cake cutting and belly filling lunch, there was the awesome DJ that brought out the Shakiras and Michael Jacksons to the dance floor, challenging to dance till they actually drop!

The event ended with the announcements of the much awaited results of Mr. and Ms. Freshers, and complementary awards of Ms. Charming and Ms. Well dressed. All in all, it was a fun filled day with lots of music, dance, new camaraderie, and lots of memories that will always be cherished.
