again in Jerusalem, building bridges, roadsand not walls, for us and for all the Church.”

This exacting agenda encompasses broadhorizons that compel us to demonstrate ourspiritual proximity to the new ApostolicAdministrator through ourmost efficacious means, prayer. Material toolsmust also be madeavailable to realize it and,as an Order, we have aparticular responsibility toprovide him with all thenecessary resources.

Therefore, I appealurgently to our membersto make further efforts with their usualgenerosity in order to make the necessarymeans available to Archbishop Pizzaballa.

I am sure – and for this I thank them –that Lieutenants and Magistral Delegateswill know how to satisfy these expectations, with conscience and loyalty. I, together with

my closest collaborators and the wholeGrand Magisterium, commit to remain incontact with the Patriarchate and coordinateour combined effort to the best of ourabilities. On the other hand, I am certain

that our new Archbishopknows very well theimportance of his ownduties and is aware that ourattentive management ofthe donations from Knightsand Dames is necessary forthe efficient fulfillment ofthe mission given by theHoly See.

I know that I can dependon all of you and, therefore, express myhighest gratitude. I also restate our spiritualand material proximity to ArchbishopPierbattista Pizzaballa, wishing full successupon the challenging path he has started totread.

Each year, September 21 is celebratedworldwide as the International Day ofPeace. The United Nations General

Assembly has declared that this day will bedevoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within countries and between peoples. The day before, in Assisi, Pope Francisattended the 30th anniversary of the inter-religious meeting of prayer for peace held for

the first time on October 27, 1986 on theinitiative of St. John Paul II.“We are called to be “trees of life” that absorbthe contamination of indifference and restorethe pure air of love to the world,” the Popesaid during his meditation in the LowerBasilica of Saint Francis. Commenting on thetheme “A thirst for peace, religions andcultures in dialogue”, he recalled that “from

the side of Christ on the Cross water flowed, that symbol of the Spirit who gives life (cf. Jn19:34); so that from us, his faithful, compassion may flow forth for all who thirsttoday”. Thus side by side, almost 500religious leaders from nine different faithscame together to pray for three days, thanksto the Community of Sant’Egidio, togetherwith the Diocese of Assisi and the Franciscanreligious family.

At the opening of these days for peace, onSaturday, September 18th, the ItalianPresident Sergio Mattarella, a ferventCatholic and member of the Order of theHoly Sepulchre of Jerusalem, stressed thatthe culture of dialogue may prevail overobscurantism. Many ofthe interventions werefollowed by intensemoments of prayer. TheGrand Mufti of Lebanonpointed out, for example, how terrorism killsIslam.

There werereferences to thesituation in the MiddleEast. One of the panelsheld on September wasdedicated to "Livingtogether among religions in Israel." Theauxiliary bishop of the Latin Patriarchate ofJerusalem for Israel, Msgr. Giacinto BoulosMarcuzzo spoke on behalf of the CatholicChurch. In his intervention, he outlinedthree levels of dialogue that are particular tothe Holy Land. First, dialogue around theWord of God that if, on the one hand, showshow the very idea of dialogue comes fromRevelation, from the dialogue between Godand man, on the other hand rarely entersinto issues related to justice given theproblematic nature and sensitivity of thesituation between the various communities.Second, dialogue in this Land is connectedto the Holy Places which represent a uniqueopportunity for man and God to draw close

to each other. Finally, we must not forgetthe dialogue of the pilgrims who, belongingto a particular religious tradition, treasurethe experience of being in a land that is alsoholy for other communities.

During the Christian ecumenical prayerthat took place before the closing ceremony,a candle was lit for the various countrieswhose populations are living in situations ofconflict. One was lit for the Holy Land, sodear to the Knights and Dames of the HolySepulchre.

“Peace alone is holy, not war” the Popeinsisted in his address in the late afternoonin the Basilica Square, affirming, as hadBenedict XVI, “that violence in all its forms

does not represent “thetrue nature of religion. Itis the antithesis ofreligion and contributesto its destruction”. “We donot have weapons. Webelieve, however, in themeek and humblestrength of prayer”continued Francis, addingthat “the clear waters ofpeace for whichhumanity thirsts: thesewaters do not flow from

the deserts of pride and personal interests, from the dry earth of profit at any cost andthe arms trade”.

During the closing ceremony, AndreaRiccardi, founder of the Sant’Egidiocommunity, likened the religions to“fountains of hope” for those who thirst forpeace. Each religious leader lit a candle, asign of the light that dispels darkness, whilea “call for peace” was entrusted to childrenaround the world so they can in turntransmit it to all the rulers of the planet.“May a new season finally begin, in whichthe globalized world can become a family ofpeoples”, was the hope, with a particularemphasis on the fact that “we can all bepeacemakers.”

During the Second Vatican Council, with Gaudium and Spes

documents and Nostra Aetate, PopePaul VI opened the way for dialoguewith our brothers and sisters of otherreligions. To implement this dialogue,John Paul II, Benedict XVI – who waspresent in Assisi for the 25th

anniversary of the first meeting – andof course Pope Francis have chartedthe same course. The course of aChurch renewed by the council.

Three members of the Order of the HolySepulchre have emerged from amongst the

new cardinals whose names were announced thisSunday 9 October by Pope Francis. We offer ourcongratulations to Mgr. Blase J. CUPICH (1),archbishop of Chicago and Grand Prior of the Lieutenancy USA North Central,Mgr. Carlos Osoro SIERRA (2), archbishop of Madrid, and Mgr. Renato CORTI(3), archbishop emeritus of Novara.

We assure them of our spiritual union with them, something which the GrandMaster will convey to them personally during the Mass presided on by the HolyFather, next 20 November in Rome, the day after the Consistory. This celebrationwill gather them together with the other Cardinals for the closure of the Year ofMercy.

The presence of the charisma of MotherTeresa, proclaimed a saint by the HolyFather Sunday, September 4 in St.

Peter’s Square, illuminates the streets of theHoly Land in the joy of a smile and inservice.

The Missionary Sisters of Charity arrivedin the Diocese of Jerusalem in 1970 andtoday have active communities in Gaza,Jerusalem, Nablus, and Bethlehem and, inJordan, in Amman, Ermaimim and Rusaifeh. Some are active in reception centers, caringfor the elderly or those with disabilities andgiving support to poor families. In otherrealities they are a roving presence visitingfamilies in their homes, and even enliveningcatechism.

Moreover, in Nazareth, there is acommunity of the Contemplative MissionaryBrothers of Charity. Besides the three classicvows – obedience, poverty, and chastity –the brothers profess a fourth official vow: tofreely and wholeheartedly serve the poorest

of the poor. On June 15, 2013, on theoccasion of the solemn profession of fivemembers of the congregation, thepatriarchal vicar for Israel, Msgr. GiacintoBoulos Marcuzzo blessed their new chapeldedicated to the Holy Family of Nazareth, like all the chapels of the ContemplativeMissionaries of Charity. The altar containsthe relics of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, SaintMariam Baouardy, Saint Marie AlphonsineGhattas and Blessed Charles de Foucauld.

Mother Teresa made a pilgrimage to theHoly Land in 1982 and, on that occasion, visited the Houses of Peace (Dar al-Salam) ofher congregation in Amman (Tla el-Ali),Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Nablus and Gaza. She also visited the seminary of the LatinPatriarchate in Beit Jala where she wrote onthe guestbook that love is the foundation ofa priest’s life.

The Missionaries of Charity have severalactive centers across the Middle East. Weremember, with deep emotion, the

community in Yemen which recentlywitnessed the violent loss of four sisterskilled on March 4, one of which, SisterAnselm, had lived for some time at one ofthe houses in Jordan.

During the press conference for thecanonization of Mother Teresa onSeptember 2 at the Vatican Press Office,Sister Mary Prema Pierick, superior generalof the Missionaries of Charity, responded toa journalist’s question asking what thefuture saint of Calcutta would have said

about the current situation in the MiddleEast: “Dear brothers, love one another, takecare of each other and come to each other’said because we are all children of the sameheavenly Father and are created to love andbe loved. The evil that we commit in conflictis to no one’s advantage but God wants tosee us united”.

We join in prayer and thanksgiving forthis woman of God whose life has broughtmany fruits to the Holy Land andthroughout the world.

VII N° 44 - FALL 2016

“We were more than 800pilgrims, 550 of which wereKnights and Dames from all

over Italy and also from Switzerland”, saidthe Lieutenant for Italy South Tyrrhenian,

Knight Grand Cross Giovanni Napolitano, who, incidentally, was highly congratulatedby the Grand Master for the perfectorganisation of this event which will godown in history.

Proceedings of the Grand Magisterium

At the decision of Cardinal Edwin O’Brien, Grand Master ofthe Order of the Holy Sepulchre, there was a jubilee

pilgrimage of Knights and Dames from all over Italy to theMarian shrine in Pompeii, during the month of the Rosary onSaturday 15 October 2016, for the Year of Mercy which comes

to a close on 20 November

During the beautiful and moving Mass at Pompeii presided on by Cardinal O’Brien, Grand Master, Mgr.Antonio Franco, Assessor of the Order, reminded us in his homily that, “in Bartolo Longo we have themodel of a Christian who experienced the Mercy of the Father, and who felt compelled to be a livingwitness of this love, which expressed itself through works of charity”. He concluded with a prayer in whichthe pilgrims united: “May Mary touch our heart and make us merciful, attentive, sensitive, and strivingourselves to be instruments of merciful love”.

Page 8: Reflections of the Grand Master - Vatican.va...the relics of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Saint Mariam Baouardy, Saint Marie Alphonsine Ghattas and Blessed Charles de Foucauld. Mother

During a morning conference on thePompeiian charism, which used BartoloLongo’s testimony of a Christian life, theparticipants of the pilgrimage learnt aboutall the works of charity which were builtfrom nothing, on just ‘a penny a month’,also realising the truth of the message ofGod’s love, given through the mediation ofOur Lady, to the only lay member of the

Order of the Holy Sepulchrebeatified to this day.

Model of Christian life, ofhumility and selflessness for allKnights and Dames, they had thechance to personally invoke him, notably through the prayer forhis canonisation (see next page).

After that, leaving onprocession through the streets ofthe Marian city, the pilgrims ofthe Order passed through theHoly Door of the shrine, beforeattending midmorning Mass. Thereliquary containing the body ofBlessed Bartolo Longo had, exceptionally, been placed closeto the altar underneath the well-known image of the Blessed

Virgin of Pompeii. Welcoming thecongregation at the beginning of theEucharistic celebration Msgr. TommasoCaputo, the archbishop prelate andpontifical delegate for Pompeii – himself amember of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre– strongly underlined that, “through theintercession of the Blessed, the Knights andDames today entrust their fervent desire to

Bartolo Longo died on 5 October 1926, exactly 90 years ago, and hewas proclaimed Blessed by Saint John-Paul II on 26 October 1980. In

the homily for his beatification, the Holy Father said of him; “through hislove for Mary, he became author, apostle of the Gospel, promoter of theHoly Rosary, founder of the famous shrine despite enormous difficultiesand challenges; through love for Mary, he created institutions of love, hebecame a beggar for the children of the poor, he transformed Pompeii into alively city of human and Christian goodwill; through love for Mary, he silentlycarried trials and tribulations, going by way of a long Gethsemane, alwaysconfident in Providence, always obedient to the Pope and to the Church.”

Pope Pius X made the Good Samaritan of Pompeii a Knight of the Holy Sepulchrein recognition of his action in service of the most disadvantaged, in which he saw the suffering Christ. His humanitarian and spiritual works attest to the grace of God triumphing over the ruin of sin, and showthe greatness of God’s mercy.

live a Christian life of charity, and toincrease the works of moral and materialsupport helping those Christians of theHoly Land and the Middle East.” In hishomily Msgr. Antonio Franco, Assessor ofthe Order, encouraged the Knights andDames to experience deeply the grace offorgiveness in the final days of the Jubileeof Mercy.

After sharing a joyful meal as a family– raising the idea even then of a futureinternational pilgrimage of the Order toPompeii, perhaps after the canonisation ofBartolo Longo – the pilgrims came back tothe shrine at the beginning of theafternoon for a time of EucharisticAdoration and the Holy Rosary, honouringalso their patron saint just a few daysfrom the feast of Our Lady of Palestine, liturgically celebrated on 25 October.

The Grand Magisterium’sautumn meeting

It was in the presence and withthe active participation of thenew Apostolic Administrator of

the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem,Msgr. Pierbattistta Pizzaballa, thatthe members of the GrandMagisterium were gatheredtogether, with the Grand Master ofthe Order of the Holy Sepulchre, onOctober 25 and 26, in Rome. Duringthe second day of the session, Massin honour of Our Lady of Palestinewas presided by Msgr. Pizzaballa inthe church of Santo Spirito inSassia, Roman shrine of the DivineMercy, before the annual receptionin the Palazzo della Rovere, seat ofthe Order, where Cardinal EdwinO’Brien received his guests, ofwhom Cardinal Pietro Parolin,Secretary of State for His Holiness PopeFrancis, was at the top of the list.

At the beginning of the meeting, CardinalEdwin O’Brien warmly welcomedArchbishop Pierbattistta Pizzaballa, whom hehad accompanied just one month beforeduring his solemn entrance into Jerusalem. The Grand Master equally greeted Msgr.Bernard-Nicolas Aubertin, Archbishop ofTours and Consultor of the GrandMagisterium, future head of the Order inFrance, as well as the ambassador AlfredoBastianelli, new Chancellor of the Order.

The Governor General Agostino Borromeothanked the cardinal for his travels whichhad already led him to meet 90% of theLieutenancies, reinforcing the dynamism andrenewing the enthusiasm of memberseverywhere, but particularly in countries farfrom Europe. He also announced that Msgr.Pizzaballa had joined the Order, and isnominated for Pro Grand Prior. He praised

the expansion of the Order, notably inNorthern Europe, with the creation of theSweden-Denmark Lieutenancy, and itscontinuing development in Asia and thePacific region, for which Paul Bartley isbecoming Vice Governor General.

Msgr. Pizzaballa then described thesituation in the Holy Land, expressing hiswish to personally meet all the priests of thePatriarchate, and to create councils plannedby canon law. An ‘audit’ managed by anoutside organisation should allow a decisivestep in financial reorganisation. The youngarchbishop, who enjoys the completeconfidence of the Holy Father, has launcheda call to the members of the Order, to nothesitate in participating in this joint reflexion, according to their competencies, showingavailability and openness to dialogue, andwilling transparent communication betweenthe two institutions. He further asked thatthe Order participates in the currentrestoration works, even just symbolically, for

the aedicule of the Holy Sepulchre, theBasilica which has forever been consideredthe cathedral of the Catholic Church.

The meeting was followed by Fr ImadTwal’s (responsible for the economicalquestions of the Patriarchate) presentationshining a light on the specific expenditures ofthe seminary, where numerous future priestsare studying, and taking stock of the aidbrought by the Order to the parish and thethree Catholic schools in Gaza (936,000dollars).

The Holy Land Commission of the GrandMagisterium then presented their reportfollowing the site visit conducted lastsummer by Bartholomew McGettrick andHeinrich Dickmann. Solidarity andsubsidiarity characterise the action of theCommission serving the projects of thePatriarchate assumed by the GrandMagisterium, especially in the social andeducational domains, which remainsattentive to people in a dynamic ofaccountability and empowerment.

The preliminary report of the GrandMagisterium’s accounts, put together by theEngineer Piercarlo Visconti, appears to bevery positive; the expenditures have droppedand the members’ donations do not cease toincrease in proportion to the international

development of the Order. The work of the Grand Magisterium has

also helped the schools of the Patriarchate, which concern nearly 20,000 students whosefuture is threatened by financial difficulties, especially with respect to the need for a risein teachers’ salaries. In accordance withsuggestions of the Grand Magisterium, whichhave been expressed many times in the past,Msgr. Pizzaballa plans to unite forcesprogressively through bringing all theChristian schools together, including thosebeyond the Patriarchate, with the aim ofdefending their common interests.

In concluding the meeting, amongst othersubjects dealt with in-depth, ChancellorBastianelli highlighted the remarkableincrease of members between 1 October 2015and 30 September 2016 (1457 admissions, being nearly 50% more than the year before). The next meeting of the Grand Magisteriumwill be held 3 and 4 May 2017.

François Vayne

Editor’s note: A more complete report of the meetingwill be published in the Annals 2016, theGrand Magisterium’s annual review.

The time of the Grand Magisterium’s meeting always starts with a Eucharistic celebration. In commentingon the Gospel (Lk. 13: 18-21) Cardinal O’Brien held in high esteem the greatness of the vocation of themembers of the Order, reminding us that, “God sees all the potential of our life, even in the darkest timesand when we see ourselves as unworthy, it is that which we can only imagine”. The following day, Msgr.Pizzaballa emphasized the gratuity of Salvation, taking as reference Luke who gives us the image of thenarrow door (Lk. 13: 22-30): only those who have experienced being saved as something independent totheir good works, can pass through this door. “Accepting the fact that Salvation is free, is truly to take the‘narrow’ path, because for us it would be easier to buy it through our works thus not owing anything toanyone.” But God invites us to enter into the “inverted” logic of his Kingdom.

Page 14: Reflections of the Grand Master - Vatican.va...the relics of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Saint Mariam Baouardy, Saint Marie Alphonsine Ghattas and Blessed Charles de Foucauld. Mother

At the beginning of last summer, parallel to the creation of a new website in fivelanguages (www.oessh.va), the Grand Magisterium created a Facebook page and aTwitter account to increase the daily communication between all members of the

Order. The 30,000 Dames and Knights of the Order in the world and their friends, aretherefore invited to join us on these social networks in order to testify to the dynamism of thelife of the Lieutenancies in service of the culture of encounter in the Holy Land.

On September 10, the new ApostolicAdministrator of the LatinPatriarchate of Jerusalem, Msgr.

Pierbattista Pizzaballa, received episcopalordination from the hands of CardinalLeonardo Sandri, Prefect of theCongregation for Eastern Churches, inBergamo. On September 21, he made his

solemn entry as Apostolic Administrator intoJerusalem. Among the first to welcome him,Cardinal Edwin O’Brien, Grand Master ofthe Order, who warmly greeted Msgr.Pizzaballa on behalf of all the Knights andDames of the Order. After entering the OldCity through Jaffa Gate, the processionaccompanied the new Apostolic

Administrator to the Co-Cathedral of theLatin Patriarchate where the communityprayed vespers with him. In the next pageswe publish excerpts from the moving speechgiven by Msgr. Pizzaballa on this occasionand during which he reiterated his desire to“welcome, listen, discern and, together, guide the journey of the Church for thecoming years.”

September also saw changes in Israelipublic life with the death of former IsraeliPresident Shimon Peres, who had completedhis term in 2014, shortly after attending themeeting of prayer for peace in the HolyLand inside the Vatican Gardens at theinvitation of Pope Francis, along with thePalestinian President Abu Mazen and thePatriarch of Constantinople Bartholomew I.

A YOUTHFUL SUMMER

When the holidays arrive, the youngpeople of the Holy Land have theopportunity to undertake a variety ofextracurricular activities. The Saint JamesVicariate for Hebrew-speaking Catholicsorganized a six-week summer camp inJerusalem and one in Tel Aviv, for about 65children, with many sports, artistic, recreational and spiritual activities. Thecamp was preceded by ten days at DeirRafat Sanctuary. When similar initiatives areorganized, the experience is not just for the

children involved but also for the youngvolunteers who come from all four cornersof the globe: from those who live closest toTel Aviv, to Carol who came from Brazil.

This summer, 700 adolescents of thediocese of Jerusalem, were also able to takepart in World Youth Day in Krakow, Poland. The group left on July 18 from Jerusalem. On the website of the Latin Patriarchate ofJerusalem, one young man recounts hisexperience, grateful for all he received fromGod and from the young Poles who havewelcomed his group with open arms. Healso points out that the cornerstones ofWYDs are prayer and fraternity. “It’simportant to talk to God often to avoidspiritual aridity. Prayers and the liturgy ofthe hours, the Mass itself, are not sufficientfor those seeking intimacy with God. That’swhy, even during the holidays (especiallyduring the days of World Youth Day), theChristian must look for a moment in his dayto gather in silence and carry out anexamination of conscience, to internalizewhat is given to him in order to live, tounderstand in depth the meaning of theexperience, and this, despite the temptationsthat can distract a person from theseprecious moments. The magnificentlandscapes of this country that has sufferedmany occupations, favor this exercise, themovement of the soul toward God and whatis at its depths”.

THE BASILICA OF THE HOLYSEPULCHRE IN JERUSALEM AND OFTHE NATIVITY IN BETHLEHEM

The two basilicas which are so central tothe Christian faith and prayer life of thelocal community and the pilgrims simplycannot remain closed. So, in recent monthsduring restoration work, access to thefaithful has always been allowed. Therestoration of the Basilica of the Nativity –in which it was possible to save about 200out of 2000 square meters of originalmosaics – also provided a surprise: througha technique called thermography, the figureof a seventh angel has been brought to light,a mosaic almost 3 meters high.

THE REOPENING OF SCHOOLS

During the summer, the Patriarchate wasshaken by the sad news of the death ofFather Faysal Hijazeen, 55, director of theLatin Patriarchate schools in Palestine andIsrael. In August, before the reopening ofschools, the Apostolic Administrator of thePatriarchate, Archbishop Pizzaballa, appointed as his successor Father Iyad Twal.We wish him well in his new assignment.

In early September, the situation of the47 Christian schools enrolling 33,000students in Israel is once again one offinancial gravity. The patriarchal vicar forIsrael, Msgr. Giacinto Boulos Marcuzzospoke to the French section of VaticanRadio, recalling the agreement that was

reached last year with the Israeligovernment. There were two main points ofthe agreement: the payment of 50 millionshekels from the state to Christian schoolsand the formation of a bilateral commissionto study the basic issues concerning theChristian schools compared to those of Stateschools.

Msgr. Marcuzzo confirms that to date, nopayment was made by the authorities. “Thelast proposal advanced by the ministry wasto present projects for the future that wouldbe funded but we said no because we’re nottalking about the future but to offset someof the subsidies that we were not given inthe past”. As for the bilateral commission, the works were completed in March 2016,and a list of recommendations wasdelivered but even on that front, there havebeen no concrete steps forward.

Christians represent 2% of thepopulation and 4% of the school-capacityyet, in universities, 30% of students wereeducated in a Christian school. “The state ofIsrael should be proud of the quality ofthese schools, and should help to continueto bring forth these fruits in abundance,”says the patriarchal vicar.

There was a positive initiative to promotethe co-existence before the start of school inJerusalem, where about 400 Arab andJewish children together with their parentsgathered at the YMCA center. “We gatheraround what we have in common,” said oneof the organizers. One of the activitiesoffered to children, was to write blessings

During restoration of the Basilica of the Nativity, atBethlehem, a seventh angel was discovered, a mosaicnearly three metres tall, which prompted Pope Francissay, addressing the representatives of the AidAgencies for the Oriental Churches: “Your work shouldalways be guided by the certitude that, under thematerial and moral incrustations (…) is found a shiningface like that of the angel of the mosaic. (…) Youcontribute to this ‘restoration’ so that the face of theChurch may visibly reflect the light of Christ, the Wordmade flesh.”

for each other on a hugebillboard in the center of whichstands the inscription “lovekindness” in Hebrew, Arabic andEnglish. “It will hang outside ofthe YMCA on King David Streetbut then we’ll take it and we’llmake a cover for the scrolls ofthe Torah in our synagogue,”said Dasee Berkowitz, managerof educational programs atKehillat Zion synagogue.

Lessons are alsorecommencing at BethlehemUniversity, a center of excellencefor higher studies in Palestine, inwhich young people can chooseto attend classes in five faculties(Nursing, Education, Economics, Sciencesand Fine Arts) and in the Institute ofHospitality and Tourism. During thesummer, the Order’s Commission for theHoly Land undertook one of its two annualvisits to the Holy Land. One of thescheduled meetings included a meeting withPeter Bray, Vice Chancellor of this universityrun by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, acongregation founded by John Baptist De LaSalle. In an interview he granted us, Brayshares what most motivates him in hismission: “I find it motivating to sit and listena student who speaks of the fact that hishouse was demolished for the second timeand hear his reflections about the fact thatthe Israelis have taken his home, his land, his freedom, but they cannot take hiseducation! This is the resilience that I see inso many students who have to reckon withthe restrictions related to employment andthat despite this live a full life. “(Read thefull interview with Peter Bray)” We aredeeply grateful to the Knights and Dameswho are from different parts of the world fortheir help – said the Vice Chancellor Bray –since 1995, the Order has donated morethan $ 6.6 million to the University ofBethlehem”.

NEW CENTERS IN JERUSALEM

In September two new centers were alsoopened in Jerusalem. The Vicariate of St.James opened a new reception center forinfants and young children – up to 3 years –for migrants: the Rachel center (see article). In addition, after a year and a half ofmeetings and discussions between religiousleaders of Jewish, Christian and Muslimcommunities, September 5 the doors of the“Amen” House of Prayer opened. Theinitiative began as the vision of wanting tocreate a physical space but above all aspiritual space for those among us who, regardless of their faith, want to share ourlove for Jerusalem and meet at a place ofprayer. Christian promoters include FatherRafic, responsible for the Hebrew speakingcommunity in Jerusalem, Sister Esther, aCoptic Orthodox nun, and Father AlbertoPari, a Franciscan.

XVIII N° 44 - FALL 2016

The new Apostolic Administratorfor the Patriarchate of Jerusalem,Msgr. Pierbattista Pizzaballa made

his solemn entrance into Jerusalem last21 September, accompanied notably byCardinal Edwin O’Brien, Grand Masterof the Order of the Holy Sepulchre. Thehistoric speech which the ApostolicAdministrator gave on this occasion, inthe co-cathedral, outlines his missionaryprogramme for the years to come.Essential extracts upon which tomeditate and to go deeper:

Dear Brothers and Sisters,I thank you for having come here from

many different parts of the Holy Land.I greet in particularHis Eminence Edwin Cardinal O’Brien,The Heads of Catholic Churches,The Heads of the Christian Churches,The Consuls General,The Palestinian Delegation,Priests and Religious,The Seminarians from Beit Jala and Domus

Galilaeae,The Magnificat Choir,All Priests and Parishes,And Friends,

[…] I began my service on the day whenthe Church commemorates the birth of Johnthe Baptist. And inspired by his character, Ihave considered the beginning of myministry as a “Prepare the Way… open, straight ways, free from all that hinders theencounter with Him and between us.” And Iadded: “I want for us and for the wholeChurch the ability to meet and greet oneanother, building roads and bridges and notwalls would go out again from Jerusalem.”

I can only repeat this wish. Welcoming, listening, discerning and together, guiding

the path of the Church for the coming years.I know it will not be easy. I am not naive.

After the joy of the transfiguration, there isthe descent from the Mount, in ordinary andeveryday life, with its share of joys certainly, but also of problems, sufferings anddivisions. And in Jerusalem, and moregenerally in the Holy Land, the divisions arenot lacking. They are rough, and in our dailylives they cause harm. We see it all the time:in political and social life, in a politicalconflict that ruins life for all, in dignityoffended, in the lack of respect for the basicrights of people; we also see it in inter-religious relations, between our churchesand also often within our respectivechurches. The devil, who is the origin of thedivisions, seems to have taken up residencein Jerusalem.

A motto for the Church in theHoly Land: “To be a witness of unity”

XIX N° 44 - FALL 2016

Well then, precisely in such a difficultcontext and one that does not allow us tocreate illusions, we are called to be Church, that is, to give our witness of unity. Here, ina word, in this torn and dividedenvironment, the first announcement to bemade is unity, which begins with us, withinour house.

[…] Jerusalem recalls Easter. In the HolySepulchre it is always Easter. Easter signifiespassing: from death to life, from darkness tolight, from the distrust of the disciples ofEmmaus to the excitement of the apostles atPentecost. We must, we want, then, tobecome experts in a life that comes from theCross, a life that is not resigned to death, butone that conquers with love.

“I want to be bishop of all and for all”

I want to carry out therefore my serviceas a bishop, in the light of Easter. Faced withthe many signs of death in and around us, Iwould like to accompany this our church ingoing over again its own history, as Jesus didwith the disciples of Emmaus, to discover aPresence that never abandoned us and thatis the source of eternal life. And to askourselves if we really believe this. If wetruly believe that Christ is the source ofstrength and life.

In fact, our human strategies, oftenconceived hastily and superficially, cannotsave the Church and its institutions. Ourgreatness is not measured in the number ofundertakings that we can make and not evenin the degree of consensus that we willreach. All this passes quickly. And perhapswe should ask ourselves if we have spenttoo much energy and attention to whatinstead is secondary. “Sufficit tibi gratia mea”.First of all, seek and accept the grace ofGod.

We must start from the awareness of thepresence of Christ among us. It is thisawareness that must be at the origin of ourchoices and our projects. Everything else

comes after. I ask all of you to help me inthis service.

[…] I desire that the different souls thatmake up our church, one but very diverse, might collaborate ever more and better. Inthis regard, I wrote a few days ago to thepriests of the Patriarchate:

“The Church of Jerusalem, is rich ininitiatives, even in prestigious institutions (Ithink of the theological and biblicalinstitutes, the Universities of Bethlehem andMadaba), institutes of religious men andwomen, of movements, of many schools thatplay an important service and which are amuch-desired pastoral determinant; we haveunique and special relations with otherChristian Churches, not to mention thenecessity of coordination with the EasternCatholic Churches; inter-relationship withMuslims and Jews is our daily bread, thoughnever easy; the arrival of foreign workersand refugees both in Jordan and the HolyLand has brought new dynamics to ourChurch; in all our territories it becomesdifficult to care for and to keep abreast offamilies, who increasingly move away fromthe Church; the presence of hundreds ofthousands of pilgrims from around theworld puts us in contact then with theuniversal Church that in Jerusalem, as onthe day of Pentecost, continues to gathertogether; nor can we, moreover, ignore thatwe are in the Land where God’s Word waswritten and was fulfilled.”

Well, for me, being Church means that allthese feel part of a single body, andparticipants with each other. I hope that thisfeeling is shared by you. I want to be bishopof all and for all. And I hope for the fullcooperation of all.

May God sustain our path towards Him,open our eyes to the suffering of this Landand its inhabitants, and make us capable ofconsolation and comfort.

And to all of you goes my prayer andblessing.

+ Pierbattista

XX N° 44 - FALL 2016

About thirty new Knights andDames of the Order of the HolySepulchre where knighted in the

Cathedral of Saint-Louis des Invalides inParis, last September 24, after the nightvigil in the capitulary church of theFrench Lieutenancy. The Grand Masterwho presided over the ceremoniesthanked His Excellency Pierre Murret-Labarthe, “who, at the head of theLieutenancy, carried out a faithful anddynamic service under sometimes verydifficult conditions,” welcoming HisExcellency Msgr. Bernard-NicolasAubertin, Archbishop of Tours, who

himself, from December 8 willtemporarily assume the post ofresponsibility for the Lieutenancy. Thehomily during the Mass of Investitureswas preached by Msgr. Luc Ravel,Bishop for the diocese of the FrenchArmed Forces, on the theme of themission of the Knights and Dames ofthe XXIst century. Extracts:

“I would say it is war that makes theknight, just as the abbey makes the monk, the marriage makes the husband and wife, poverty makes beggars, the Eucharistpriests.

The Life of the Lieutenancies

The French Lieutenancygathered together with

the Grand Master

CardinalO’Brien, surroundedby thebishops andprelates, havingconcelebrated during theInvestituresin Paris in thepresence ofthose holdingthe highestoffices in theOrder, namely theAssessor,Msgr. AntonioFranco, andthe GovernorGeneralAgostinoBorromeo.

And we are doubly at war: because thedevil will never give up and because todaythis timeless struggle takes the form of anew concrete war, in which terror is thepath and barbarism the explicit goal.Referring to the assassination of FatherJacques Hamel, Pope Francis did nothesitate to speak of the Devil quoting FatherJacques himself, “Begone, Satan!”

Each Knight is preparing for this war, forthis difficulty, to walk in the face of thestorm, for this conflict between the Kingdomand the world, to live it every day, as abattle. Violence. Battle. War. The Knightaccepts them as part of his history, since it ispart of the Church. He understands thefrightening encounter, the dramatic mix oflove and pain. He does not try to ignoreinjustice or close his eyes to flowing blood. He opens his eyes so that the blind see, hekeeps watch while the others sleep, alifetime is required to acquire the physical, psychological and spiritual skills to take hisplace in the front line, on the city walls, onthe forefronts of thought. That’s why heexists: To prepare before the battle and toface it without fear when it presents itself.

It is nothing new to speak of Christian life

in terms of front lines and rear guards. St.Paul explicitly calls Epaphroditus (Phil 2: 25)and Archippus (Philemon 1, 1) my “comradein arms.” The apostle has an acuteawareness of being in the field to address“our war” (2 Cor 10: 3-4). He exhortsTimothy to fight “the good fight” (1 Tim 1,18) and to be “a good soldier of Christ” (2Tim 2: 3).

God offers love, the world imposes war.God invites to grace. The world raises itsweapons. God calls to unity, the worlddestroys trust.

The Knight feels the call of God to standfirm in the breach, at the precise point offailure, the exact limit where, more thananywhere else, man lives terrible momentsof terror, massive traumas of war. Wheretectonic plates collide against each other, where the divine energies collide with theforces of death.

I am too familiar with the world of thesoldier to speak of any other to you.”

Just days after the end of the intense andmoving World Youth Day experience inKrakow, a Knight of the Polish

Lieutenancy, Janusz Kamin’ski, comments:“In 1984 I was 22 and I was in Rome when

John Paul II invited young people from allover the world by giving them the JubileeCross“. That was the beginning of the WorldYouth Days and Janusz remembers “thewarmth and care that I received in Rome

From WYD in Poland to “Olympic Games”in Ramallah: the Order of the Holy

in anticipation of vacation, there are many possibilities tobe at the service of young people around the world

from the organizers and the peoplewho had hosted us. It was then that Idecided I wanted to welcome youngpeople in the future and this yearfinally I finally had the opportunityto do so”.

Thus Janusz’s home became anintercontinental guest house duringthe World Youth Day with threepriests from Japan. “I think the mostmemorable and touching momentwas when Japanese priests wereleaving from our house, and theysaid “ittekimasu”, which in Japan is usedwhen someone is leaving one’s own homeand to which you respond “itterashai” whichmeans “go and come back again”. That wasthe best sign that they felt right at home”.

Several other members of the Orderopened the doors of their homes to welcomethe young people who flocked to Krakowlast July. Knight Jacek Antoni Rutkowskisays: “Many have offered hospitality topilgrims, prayed with them, and told themsomething about our nation and its history, including over 850 years of the Order inPoland”, as well as having participated in theorganization of the event itself. In particular, the Adoration Altar in Brzegi was created bythe renowned Polish artist MariuszDrapikowski, Knight Commander of theOrder. Now that the celebrations are over, the altar will be brought to the Shrine ofOur Lady, Mother of the Word, in Rwanda.

Meanwhile, a group of young Frenchvolunteers has left for the Holy Land wherefrom July 20 to 30 they ran a summer campin the Latin parish of Ramallah, offering ten-day of games, songs, discovery, learning

French and encounter on the theme“Olympic Games”. The project was proposedby Charles-Edouard Roed-Guilbert, squire ofthe Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchreof Jerusalem, who had already organised afirst camp in Ramallah in 2015. From 30children last year, this year the campwelcomed 70.

Claire de Puybaudet and GuillaumeMalnoy, two volunteers, shared theirexperience with us: “Among the many thingsthat we observed and which amazed us, wasthe closeness between the Christian andMuslim communities. They all live inharmony and undertake certain publicinitiatives to organize activities that involvesthe different actors of the their community. If the joy of children and communities werenot enough to win our hearts, then thehospitality, of the community in which welived and those who assisted us, thegratitude of parents, really made us feelfortunate to have been of this buddingadventure”. They conclude:” Today we arecertain of one thing: this summer camptransforms us more and more each day.”

Between the Olympic Games at Ramallahin Palestine, and WYD in Krakow, themembers of the Order – of all generations –dedicated a lot in service of the Church lastsummer.

XXIII N° 44 - FALL 2016

In the Newsletter of July 2016, the GrandMaster, Cardinal Edwin O’Brien, hadinvited the priests who belong to the

Order to reflect on their role, certain that“the great majority of our clergy will acceptthe pastoral challenge of serving members atevery level and in every field in which ourLieutenancies need pastoral care.”

On the day when the Church celebratesthe Assumption of Mary into heaven, August15, Cardinal Roger Mahony, archbishopemeritus of Los Angeles and Grand Prior ofthe Lieutenancy of Western USA, sent aletter to the priests’ members of hisLieutenancy echoing the words of the GrandMaster and inserting them into the localcontext. First, Cardinal Mahony said that therole of church members is “unique andessential.”

The Grand Prior – who recently becameemeritus – then emphasized how theKnights and Dames of the Order are calledto strengthen the practice of Christian lifeand how on this journey, priestsconsequently have the duty to support themthrough a series of concrete actions whichthe Cardinal went on to list: spiritualdirection, administration of the sacrament ofReconciliation during liturgies, presence atthe praying of the rosary and the celebrationof the feasts of the Order (see article on theOrder’s Feasts), sending short e-mails or

printed meditations, sharing of relevant textsconcerning the Holy Land, for example, taken from the speeches of Pope Francis.

Another area that directly concerns theecclesiastical members of the Lieutenancy isthe possibility of identifying goodcandidates, above all, stresses theArchbishop Emeritus of Los Angeles, “theyoung members representing the diversity ofthe ethnic groups in our diocese”. In fact, despite the significant numbers of Hispanicgroups or those from the Asia-Pacific region, these communities are insufficientlyrepresented in the Western USALieutenancy.

Finally Cardinal Mahony underscored theimportance of the annual contribution to bepaid like the other members of the Order, aswell as the decision to support a specificproject, for example, those relating to theseminarians in the Holy Land.

Priests who belong to the Order are agreat resource and represent an importantpotential for the integral development ofeach Lieutenancy.

Cardinal Mahony was recently replacedin his role as Grand Prior of the LieutenancyUSA Western by the Archbishop of LosAngeles, Msgr. José Gomez. The GrandMaster, Cardinal Edwin O’Brien, celebratedthe inauguration of the new Grand Prior lastOctober 1.
