From The Executive Director Written by Lynn Tanner, CMCA, AMS

Our Annual Founder’s Day C e l e b ra t i o n was anoth-

er huge success this year! Although we had to dodge a few sprinkles at the begin-ning, it didn’t deter the crowds from coming and the amazing time everyone had that evening!! Enough can’t be said about what a true celebration this event is, rec-ognizing the community’s inception forty-five years ago.

So much work goes into an event like this, for it to run as smoothly as it does. Although many peo-ple played a role in volun-teering that day, there are several people that deserve special recognition for their

part in this popular event. Much of the credit goes to Jeanine Downes, Director of Community Programs, who led the planning process, with the volunteers of the Recreation Committee. A special thanks to our main-tenance staff, who spend a lot of time getting the park prepped and ready for the day’s event, as well as keep-ing the park clean and things in working order during the event.

Quarterly statements will be processed and mailed the first week of September. If you are interested in receiv-ing future statements via email, help us ‘Go Green’ by signing-up for paperless bill-ing. After you receive your statement in the mail, simply

log on to the website www.estmt.net and enter your per-sonal id code, provided to you at the top of the state-ment. Future statements will be sent to you via email. Also, look for additional payment options available. Details will be included in the September statements.

As part of our yearlong cel-ebration of Radisson’s 45th Anniversary, Town Historian Bonnie Kisselstein will be doing a special presentation

of her very popular program “The History of Radisson”. The presentation will be held at the Baldwinsville Public Library – Community Room 2 on Tuesday, October 1 at 7pm. If you haven’t seen Bonnie’s presentation yet, you will thoroughly enjoy it, I assure you. Even if you have, please plan on attending again. Bonnie is continually discovering new information on the community, which she is eager to share with us all.

2019 Founder's Day

We could have not asked for better weath-er at this sum-mer’s water

aerobics class. The ladies showed up each morning with a smile on their face, ready to dance and sing-a-long to upbeat tunes. We celebrated the end of another successful season with a delicious brunch. Everyone brought a favorite dish to share. It was a morning filled with coffee, good food, and even better company. We’d like to thank all of the

ladies for the positive attitudes and awesome energy that they brought each morning. Their grinning faces and a good workout were a wonderful way to start the day. Also thank you to the guards and instructors who helped make this season a success! We hope everyone has a great rest of the summer and we look forward to seeing everyone next year!

Reflections, August 23, 2019 Page 3

This year’s Founder’s day was truly spe-cial as we cele-brated the com-

munity’s 45th Anniversary! In addition to the kid’s craft tent, bounce house and Hippo Chow Down, we had new games for the enjoyment of teens. Pong, cornhole and Jumbo Jenga were a hit for all! Children also

enjoyed visiting Air FX Body Art for artistic temporary tattoos. All ages enjoyed Italian Sausage, Hoffman’s hot dogs, chips, bev-erages and Sunshine Ice Cream! Many people took the opportu-nity to see the grand fire trucks and ambulance up close. And making a repeat appearance – the Air 1 helicopter was amaz-ing!! Kyle Micho provided awe-some opening music, and later Six Pack got the crowd singing along with crowd-pleasing hits until PYROTECNICO started the magnificent display of fireworks, which was a perfect end to a wonderful day!

Special thanks to our Sponsors for supporting this amazing com-munity event (please see page 4). Also, thank you to all of the volunteers that worked in the food and beverage tents, the Rec

Counselors who worked at the children’s activities, and the maintenance staff for helping with this event. Last, but cer-tainly not least, many thanks to the Belgium Cold Springs Fire department, Greater Baldwinsville Ambulance Corps and the Onondaga sheriffs department for ensuring the safety of all participants.

Founder’s day is our larg-est annual Radisson Community event. Celebrating our 45th Anniversary was a tremendous milestone. spending it with neighbors, family, and friends made it special for everyone in atten-dance.

On December 11, 1941, Germany declared war on the united

States. Three months later, 250 families living between the Oswego and Seneca Rivers, on and nearby the current Radisson Community, were ordered by the Army Corps of Engineers to evac-uate their homes. Eight thou-sand acres of land were depopu-lated by the orders, and all roads into the area were blocked. Within a month, construction of a huge ordnance (ammuni-tion and weapons) plant began, with more than 3,000 workers employed at the peak of con-struction. By January 1943, less than a year later, the plant was in full operation.

The plant was under heavy security. Ten miles of chain link fencing, with strategically locat-ed guard towers, protected it. At night, floodlights played on all perimeter areas.

Inside were 88 main build-ings and more than 20 miles of roads. Eight thousand men

and women worked there. They made, processed and shipped dinitrochlorabenzene, more commonly known as “Explosive D.” It was used in armor piercing shells, and it and its processing were deadly business.

The most dangerous opera-tions were conducted in build-ings along the east side of Radisson’s drumlin – a natural hill or ridge formed by glacial ice. This was done so that, in the event of an explosion, the village of Baldwinsville would be shielded from danger. The concrete foundations along the east side of the drumlin, off what is now Willett Parkway, were part of that main manufac-turing area. These cradles sup-ported the large acid vats used in processing the explosive. The architectural sculpture that iden-tifies Radisson’s main entrance at Route 31 and Willett Parkway, was conceived in 1974 by Sergei Yevich. He used the shape of those cradles as the basis for his design.

A year and two months after production began, it was

stopped. In 1947 the property that had been the Ordnance Works was declared surplus, and the Works were abandoned. During the next few years, the Works were dismantled or destroyed and the property disposed of. Only the adminis-tration buildings near Route 31 and some of the larger concrete buildings remained.

some farmhouses and cot-tages left from before the War were offered to the public for lease. A plan to use the larger buildings for veteran’s housing fell through. Over 5600 acres went into the land bank and was eventually sold. state officials looked into the possibility of relocating the state Fair to that area but then decided not to. Syracuse University began reno-vating some of the buildings for student housing, but that work was never completed.

The State Conservation Department purchased 3000 acres in the north end of the property for the Game Management Preserve. Later, in 1952, the trustees of the William

Waldorf Astor estate bought 2000 acres for residential and commercial development, but the development never took place. For the next 20 years, the land stood idle. The Urban Development Corporation (UDC) purchased the land in 1969. it is now the site of the Lysander Planned Community, better known as Radisson.

If you would like to learn more: Bonnie Kisselstein, Baldwinsville Public Library local history librarian and Town of Lysander historian will again present her very popular pro-gram “The History of Radisson” at the Baldwinsville Public Library – Community Room 2, on Tuesday, October 1, 2019 at 7PM.
