Interview with Director

Was there any particular reason for you being influenced to start an educational institution? My grandfather was my greatest inspiration to setup this school. He wanted to start a school in Kompally and his thoughts have influenced me to start this school.

Do you think you were able to achieve what you have envisaged regarding the development of the school? No. I think we need more time to develop “Unicent School”. I think it is a continuous process that will take couple of years to reach the stage that I am envisioning now.

The 9'Th graders have completed their S.A‐1 Boards. So, what are your expectations from them?I expect them to do extremely well in their academics. I also want them to excel in other activities besides academics. More than everything, I want to see them improve from Term‐1 to Term‐2.

After our school, what profession do you think we must take up?I don't think I should decide your profession. Each individual should be able to decide what they want to become. They should purse and work in a job as per their interest. I just want them to be comfortable and excel in anything they choose.

What is the skill that you want every student to develop?Be a lifelong learner. In every failure and every success; in every part of life there is something to learn. Even if you want to change your job in the future, you must be flexible and learn the skills for the new job.

Did you want to bring up your school like any other school?Frankly, no. I am not keen to bring up our school like every other school. I think we are on the right path and would be achieving more in the next 3 to 5 years……

What's new? This is the first question that arrives to your mind after you come from school on Saturday. The first thing you ask your mom is “mama” what's new today? Something what is new very special. This year, many special and enthusiastic activities have been brought in for us in our school…

A voting session was held for children to select their leaders for the first time this year. It was quite a thrilling experience to involve in voting and electing your leaders.

Work education classes have been introduced for classes VI and IX , Providing an exposure and learning of the basics of Gardening to Grade 6 and 7, while Culinary skills are being taught for 8 and 9. All of us wait for the period to come every week, and in Gardening we take care of our saplings in turns.

An AV room has also been provided in the Ground Floor, apart from one in Grade 9, where in we are shown various ppts and videos of learning and value, both subject related and of generic nature. This room is also like a Multi‐purpose hall for us, where in Guest Sessions and Quizzes are being conducted. Visit to Home for the Aged, with a motto of presenting a few entertainment programs to make them happy as well was a nice experience for us..

A playroom is setup for pre‐primary with an LCD. Pre‐primary children need to have fun and these young toddlers are having lot of fun in the new play room. And something surely to be mentioned, TIQBIZ has been brought in, which not only shares with our parents our happy and successful moments but also updates them of the homeworks and projects they need to follow up on daily basis.

Science Club has been active this year, with the conduct of seminars, debate and quizzes on Ozone Day. Model making as a solution to Ozone depletion etc went on and we look forward for a lot more as part of the science club activities. Primary children watched a video on ozone layer. It was very informative and the children loved it.

Story telling classes for classes I to III are being taken up by Mr. Murali taking them in to a world of imagination.

Relevant field trips, like the Construction site visit by Grade 3 have been exiting way of learning. Session by Dr.Usha for Girls of H.S on adolescent health care was quite helpful. We are curious and excited and often feel quite busy as well with a lots to learn, lots to do and a lot more to explore..

A visit was organized by our school to the Sai Bhavani Garment Cotton Textile Industry which was near our locality. Learning new things is always a good experience. Today we had such an experience‐ we learnt all the different stages cotton cloth goes through before it becomes our every day wear. We also learnt a life skill‐ group worki.e. the way different people with different skills distribute their work among themselves to come up with a garment.

The textile industry was housed in a huge hall‐ with a series of machines deployed for cotton cloth manufacturing (about which I am going to detail in this report) Each machine had a specific function to perform and appropriately skilled labours were handling the machines. It had a noisy atmosphere. We saw some of the workers using earplugs. They were very friendly and took out time for illustrating about their work to us.

On interaction with the labours and enquiry with Semy madam, the manager we practically learnt about the different stages in the processing of cotton garment:‐

1. First, the raw cotton cloth is received in the form of rolls from their respective company‐“T'son”.

2. Then, samples of cloth are tested and models of the shirt were planned and made on a piece of cardboard (eg.‐collar, sleeve). The rest of the day's process is made depending on the sample made.

3. In the next stage, the cloth which was received in the form of rolls will be cut in the form of sheets and layered or spread on a big table. The thickness of the layer will be between 5‐6 inches depending on the material of the cloth.

4. After layering, the cloth spread on the table is cut with a cutter

in the shape of the model planned. It is cut in 3 different sizes‐ M^2, L^2 and XL^2(medium, large and extra‐large sizes respectively) and front and the back part of the shirt are made separately.

5. The clothes are then segregated as per their sizes and colors so that further confusion does not take place.

6. The clothes are stitched with the help of single and double sewing machines to adjoin the front and the back portions of the cloth. A fusing machine is used to give color to the sleeves and the collars and are then stitched to the shirt.

7. The clothes are washed.

8. Then, buttons are stitched into the shirt.

9. The shirts are then checked for the correct size, collar and sleeves.

10. The shirts that are in irregular form are neatly trimmed.

11. The wrinkled shirts are ironed and packed in plastic covers.

12. The finished shirts are finally dispatched to the local markets in Secunderabad.

We came to know that the labours are not paid monthly salary but on the basis of the work turned out by each individual. Theelectricity bill for the machines goes upto 30,000 – 35,000 per month.

[Cite your source here.] Overall, we had a good experience today. It is helpful for our geography lesson (Manufacturing industries) also. We would like to thank all the labours, Semi madam, and Sudeep sir for sparing their time for our experience. We would also like to thank our principal mam and the teachers for arranging such a nice opportunity for us to learn.

Story Telling The children of class I, II and III have story tel l ing sessions every Wednesday, where we observed that the children are not only enjoying the stories and morals within, but also a lot of vocabulary building is happening in the process. The class begins with Mr.Murali narrating the story to the class encouraging children to

accelerate language learning, critical thinking and be able to comprehend their imaginations as they listen and answer. Worksheets are also provided which help children to consolidate their learning and reflect over various aspects of life skills.

My First Culinary Class

We got information that we would have culinary or cooking classes every week as part of work education to be imparted. The teacher impartially divided the job of bringing the ingredients to make the dish. The first item which we decided to make was

Tricolored Sandwich. Few days passed. It was the first day of our culinary class. All were eager about the dish. Before the day of the class, some etiquette was explained by the teachers about the manner of dining. Now the class had started joyfully. First, we noted all the ingredients, nutrition values and the process in our note books. Then the groups were divided. Every group was expected to act on its own. It should prepare the dish on its own. By following the instructions given by our teachers, we prepared the dish. All of us enjoyed having sandwiches prepared by ourselves. Each group also, tried to bring variations in the manner of presenting the same. The sandwich was so yummy and we enjoyed the bite!

The “Authors” reflected their views that, they wanted Growth, but not at the cost of Environment and the Trees shouldn't be felled, which have been badly affecting the animal habitat, ultimately the humans as well. “PWD Officials” put forth their views that‐ Building roads is essential for development, they have been following the instructions and that the Government is aware of what is to be done to nature.

The Villagers” held up their views in this regard as‐ Thousands of precious trees are being destructed, Food for animals and firewood have become hard to procure, Birds and animals are losing their natural habitat and it is also resulting in lot of noise and pollution.

We found that all the roles were important and all their views were justified, we concluded where the entire class took a pledge the “Trees that we cut we will plant 100 more trees.”

I would like to share one such session in our class, Grade 8 On 9.6.15 Tuesday we were having a role play as part of English lesson – “Death of Trees”. We were arranged in to three groups. “Authors”, “PWD Officials”, and “Villagers”. We used cue‐cards to speak for or against cutting trees.

I think its human nature to feel wanted for every human. A person needs me, a friend needs me, a kid needs me...etc. For me, though its animals they too need me. I care for it and it is a point of pride that I offer it the best care I could. It started with my fish, then my rabbit and finally my rescue dog.

Describe how animals make a difference in my life:

They drain our finances, but I want to rear them for the world. Simply, making animals happy makes me happy too. When I see my fish peeking at me from under their favorite hiding spot, content in their home I smile. When I stroke the rabbit's soft fur that comes from their superior diet, I smile. When my dog sits and lays down on command from the weekly training classes I enroll him in, I smile. Caring for living things give me the most beautiful sense of fulfillment. I don't think I will ever be without some type of animal companion in my life. I can't imagine being lonely. Being around animals as it is very therapeutic, even cleaning fish tanks and scooping litter boxes is fulfilling work, because it's not for me, it's for them. And that's the difference they have made in any life: they give me a purpose higher than myself. Big and small let us save them all. Apoorva, VIII

“The joy of Gardening....”Gardening for class VI and VII started on 11th September as part of work education. We were divided into groups A, B, C and D. We tilled the ground. I was tired doing so, but I felt happy preparing the soil. On 15th September we sowed the seeds. Two students from each group were allotted to water the soil bed. After 4‐5 days

when I saw the saplings emerging out I felt really excited. The other day we took out unwanted plants. Apart from that we learned much more. Our teacher Ms.Anusheela mam gave us a lot of information, we came to know many things about gardening and how to grow plants. Earlier, I used to waste food but now came to know the value and effort behind growing plants and vegetables. I now appreciate my food much more.

“The feel of being a Teacher..”

On 5th September, at Unicent School, we the students of grade VIII and IX were asked to take on role of our teachers we wished. I chose Yesodha mam, she is the class teacher of II B. Her class was of a cute and naughty bunch.

When I went to the class, at First the children were not listening to me. I managed them with great difficulty. Then I taught them about different types of tools and their uses. They understood well and even answered to my questions. I was happy to know that they understood well. I used props and made GO's on the board to explain the topic. It was a good experience for me as a teacher. Now I understood how difficult it is to handle a class... Hats off to the teachers who work very hard for us. I would like to thank all my teachers for their hard work.

One of my best experiences at school ‐ “Sorry Card”

When I complained on Anshul that he was beating me, teacher asked him to bring “Sorry Card”. After that we never quarreled and became very good friends.I gave “Sorry Card” to Pranay in the similar incident.

While I was preparing this sorry card, my mother told me how to behave with friends there by, he also became one of my close friends. It made us understand happiness in forgiving and expressing sorry. It was really a good idea.I thank my teacher for such a good discipline.

THE ROLE OF ONE DAY TEACHER – I cherish…

Teachers' Day is one of the most awaited special events celebrated grandly in our school. On 5th September 2015 “Unicent School, Kompally” had conducted different activities for students and teachers. On that day, the students enacted as teachers. The students of class VIII

and IX had enacted like teachers by teaching students of the classes concerned to that particular teacher as per the time table from 10:30Aam to 12:30pm.

The students experienced teaching and gained a lot of fun. I enacted the role of Sunitha mam. I taught classes IV and VI. I gained a lot of knowledge by teaching them and understood the struggle of teachers. I even had a lot of fun..

The day ended with a lot of joy with a lot more competitions for teachers and other activities finally the students waited eagerly for the results to be announced for “Best Acting Teacher” and the prizes were announced. That day proved to be the most enjoyable celebration of the year and left good memories in students and teachers' hearts.

In love and Joy..It's not the days but, the moments count…

I had never forgotten my neighbors who saw me when I was born. My first steps, my first words, and so on pasted in an album which cherishes the movements whenever we see them.I can probably, never forget where I grew up with my family and unique friends and neighbors who share unforgettable memories.I would never forget the friends during my first school days and teachers who have been helping me to have a beautiful life….THINGS END; TIME MOVES; BUT MEMORIES LAST FOREVER… T. Shreya, VII

Hello there! Let me introduce myself, my name is Rishi. I am a student of class V. I would like to share my experience about the school library.

My experience at the library

The school library is one of the most interesting places I like going to. It is the place where I read a lot of books. I also imagine I am in that book. Many of my friends have joined in reading books. At least I am not alone anymore. Many of my friends have cartoon characters. They also like educational books. The library ma'am is so cooperative and kind. I also ask many questions to library ma'am, she is also very creative. Sometimes she is very busy.

The library has many kinds of books. Some of them are novels, comics and cartoons on characters, history, tin tin series, Geronimo, information books, scary stories, fun activities and other types of books.

Many people who go to the library can return more creative, happy, and wise and improve in English. They also learn some morals too. I often, like reading the comics and cartoons. Some are funny. Some are scary. Some are exciting but all books are equal. I love books. They are so interesting. My sister Aditi reads books if only they have pictures, she only sees the pictures. She wants me to bring more books with pictures. Sometimes, I accept it and sometimes I just ignore it in a bad mood. I wish, I could be at library after school as well. And, I would also like to request that whoever comes to the library should take care of the books for better use in future. I would also like people not to take things home. It is not fair if the school buys books and people steal them. I would request that if any of the things or books is lost by someone, they should pay double the sum of the book to replace it and finally thank you for giving me this chance!

The first Experience of being the Organizers…In the month of September we the students of Grade IX conducted teachers' day programs for our beloved teachers.

It was our first experience to organize a programme. Almost 2 weeks in advance, we started planning. It was decided by Principal that the teachers should be kept away from the arrangements part and we as the top most class should take the initiative and we were given the support of Admin Mam, Ms. Bindu. We were excited, of where to start, how to go about and what all to include. Then we decided in consultation with the

The first Experience of being the Organizers…

principal that a special assembly has to be organized in the morning in the presence of all the children, where in we present a few speeches on the importance of the day and the value of teachers and a few songs by students of the different houses. We decided to conduct a few games in the post lunch session, along with honoring the teachers in the presence of high school children.

We went ahead, browsing and checking the games that can be done, planned to excite them with soft board, filled by acronyms on their names, worked on the decoration of the back drop, planned the venue for the two parts of the program, the set up, seating the roles among ourselves and so on. We also, had to prepare for the classes we were expected to take as part of the self governing process. At the same time with no exclusive time being allotted for all this ground work, with continuous classes including the remedial periods, we worked between classes to get the work done.

Finally on the Due day, we were quite tense to begin with. However, as we started with the MORNING assembly and the Self Government we became confident of the program. We organized a game show called “Filmy Duniya” later my friend came up with their thoughts and decided to conduct “Start and Stop” and “Balloon Bursting” for our beloved teachers.

All our pains were rewarded, on seeing our teachers over whelmed with joy with the whole day's program. They enjoyed the programs and each of them appreciated us. The day came to an end with the felicitation of teachers, followed by the Directors' address of gathering and vote of thanks by our Principal.

On the whole we could give a whole fun filled day as a gift for our striving teachers!!!

Our experience at old age home…

My Favorite Subject

In school we learn many subjects. They are English, Mathematics, Science, Hindi and many other important subjects. Among the subjects taught in school, I like English best. English is a very important subject. In many parts of our country, people speak English. Nowadays, the frequently used and popular language is English. Many schools teach English.

Today, almost everybody uses English – may be to chat , or to crack a business deal…it's not just about anything, but for every communication under the sky.

Recently, the Government had launched campaign encouraging people to use English. There are also, apps that help improve one's English.

If one has to study overseas, one must be proficient and confident in English. In fact, it is growing up to be one of the basic requisites to grow up as a global citizen…

My memorable experience in school

Dear All! Let me share one of the memorable experiences in class, as the teacher of Unicent…

It was a skit from English lesson “5. A Horse and a Prince”. There are many characters in the lesson like a King, a Prince (Alexander), a captain, two soldiers, a man the one who brought the horse to the palace etc……..

It started with a brief narration of the story; the kids were assigned roles, given specific guidelines with regard to voice modulation apart from the dialogues to be used, the sounds to be made after dividing the class in to three groups.

A blue colored chunni was used as a cloak for the prince Alexander. The posture, the diction and the manner of walk were exemplified and directed, We used sunlight from the window to show the shadow. We used a long brown cloth piece as a tail. When I inserted the cloth into the boy's shorts entire children busted into laughter. I asked the children to neigh like a horse and told the children who acted as a horse and the Alexander to go round the benches. But as the skit went ahead, they were coming up with their own ideas, as to how specific scenes can be portrayed.

Through this group activity, I could observe the kids quickly grasp the voice modulation required, the way they were able to reflect over the roles in the story, their involvement in shaping up the story, their participation in summarizing the content. It was quite an engaging activity for them while their response was a great morale booster to me.

CIRCLE TIME

What better way to get children in tune with the necessary values and mindsets of a good life, than to have them talk and think about them together like a team… And, this is what we have brought in to the routine of Pre‐primary classes this year in our school.

Circle time is the time, provided for the

Students to sit in a large circle and use glove puppets to talk about a specific value. For example, the teacher will first put the glove puppet in her hand and play two roles – that of herself and that of the puppet. She would use the puppet to elicit various views from the children on the topic chosen as well as to maintain the orderliness and keep them motivated in the group. The students would take turns to share with the puppet their view and feelings on various topics pertaining to Manners, etiquette and values, in the form of answer to the question posed based on any one such topic addressing a small situation relevant to routine. Circle time is a great way to get students talk to themselves about important values and why we need to inculcate them. Eventually, it helps them imbibe self discipline with regard to various patterns of behavior they need to develop and grow up with good values and personality as well apart from developing better speaking and expression skills.

On the last day of our term I,, as soon as the SA‐1 exams were done and we, the students of Grade 6 and 7 had visited the “ Matha old Age Home” as part of our community service program. This old age home is located in “Jayabheri Park”, Kompally. The founder of this old age home is Mr. Satyanarayana Raju’ who had a dream of building an old age home from his childhood and he succeeded in that.

As soon as we reached there they shared their experiences with us. They sat patiently and answered to all of our questions. They gave us many tips and suggestions on how a person should live their life based on their childhood memories. We all sang a beautiful song and played a wonderful skit.

We offered fruits and biscuits to the elderly people living there. They were all quite delighted with our visit and expressed that the time we spent with them was quite exciting as well as relaxing that they can cherish , some even shared that they could remember their grand children seeing us perform and expressed that we should frequent more such visits to

them which is a soothing experience for them.

That was a pleasant and memorable Day for us as well…..

Dear parents,

Warm Greetings! In today's world as we all know, Learning is no more what is learnt within the four walls of the schoolIt is more of providing the right environment and situations for the child to perceive, assimilate, reflect, analyze, relate and apply his learning through his developmental stages of life.

And, the need of the hour is not just equipping him with the right knowledge, but also to ensure that he grows up with: an openness to learn, empathy to understand, the modesty in his behaviour and a sense of responsibility with regard to the family, society and the humanity at large to be able to succeed in today's ever evolving world.

I wish, through the positive and constructive endeavour from both of us, Our Unicentians would grow into capable and principled individual s of tomorrow's Global world.
