Habitat for Humanity Build- 3
o I chose this type of service because it was a very hands on type of service and that
really resonated with me.
Habitat for Humanity ReStore- 2
o I chose to volunteer at the ReStore a little bit by chance. I had already decided to
work at the Habitat build, but that was going to be so late in the semester that I
was not going to have enough time to get all of my hours. I decided that I would
stick with Habitat in order to get the rest of my hours.
Christmas Caroling at nursing homes- 3
o This service was also by chance. My name was drawn out of a hat and I was put
in a group to go caroling at the nursing homes.
Sidewalk Sunday School- 3
o I got involved with Sidewalk Sunday School through my girlfriend. She has been
involved with Sidewalk since she was in middle school and I decided to go with
her and see what it was about. While there we feed the kids lunch while also
teaching them about the love of Jesus Christ.
Roadside Clean-Up near High School- 1
o This service would have to be my least meaningful. I only got involved in this
project as a result of needing Beta Club hours as well as my friends being
involved.
Special Olympics- 3
o Volunteering for the Special Olympics is one of the service projects that means
the most to me. Throughout middle school and high school the “R word” became
a very commonplace word amongst myself and my friends. One day I watched a
video about a boy and his sister who had started a campaign to end the use of the
“R word”. I immediately realized how powerful that word was and how hurtful it
could be if said to or heard by certain people. In order to “spread the word to end
the word” I joined a group called Project Unify whose goal was to end the use of
the “R word” this is how I ended up involved with the Special Olympics.
I plan on working at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore this semester just like I did last year. I
made some good friends at the ReStore as well and some good connections, and I have planned
on volunteering there even after these community service classes are over. I really enjoy the
ReStore because it provides me with the perfect mixture of community service. At the ReStore I
am able to work with my hands as well as interact with the people in the community that are
having a hard time. Being able to interact with these people allows me to try to give them some
hope that things will get better while also realizing how lucky I am to be blessed with the life I
have.
