World Of Knowledge : Unit 9 Our Solar System

Lesson 1

My teaching and learning process for today’s lesson is focusing on Listening and

reading. The topic is about Our Solar System (Yr 4 Textbook, pg 83).I started the

first lesson by introducing the prepositions using the power point slides. I had my

lesson in the computer lab because I wanted to use the computer .In the first lesson

pupils learned three prepositions which were, between, above, below, beside, next to

and near. However, I can see that not all the pupils pay attention towards the learning

process. The use of the power point slides actually helped them much to understand

the concept and the prepositions introduced. Most of my pupils lacked motivation

and self-esteem to learn grammar. I realized this through observing how pupils

responded towards my lessons, the activities conducted, and pupils’ involvement in

the teaching and learning process and also by having some discussions with my

colleagues. From my observations, I realized that this problem arose because pupils

have a negative mindset about learning grammar, making them feel unmotivated.

Some of the pupils preferred to keep quiet and passive during my lessons. They did

not want to respond when I asked them. I can see that half of the pupils in the class

show their interest to learn and respond to my questions but the other half were in the

class but with the mind and soul everywhere. However, when they were asked to do

the interactive activity using the computer, they started to engage with the activity.

Pupils used this link (www.eslgamesplus.com/prepositions),

(www.passporttoenglish.com/Beginning-English). From my observations, half of the

pupils which not really pay attention during the learning process were unable to give

the correct answer when doing the interactive activity. These learners concerned me

because their behavior suggested that my lessons were unsuccessful. Sometimes, I

felt so frustrated with myself for not helping the children.

World Of Knowledge : Unit 9 Our Solar System

For the second lesson I used the Year 4 textbook to teach the prepositions. Before I

started the lesson, I show some flash cards pertaining to the prepositions of location.

I show the flash cards to the pupils and asked them to locate the object in the cards. I

found that pupils were able to state the locations of the objects. Pupils were actively

participating during the implementation of the lesson. Then, I asked the pupils to

take out their text book and go through the passage about the solar system (textbook

pg 83). I read the passage once, and explained about the solar system. I asked a few

questions to get feedback from the pupils. Pupils respond and were able to give the

correct answer. I continue the lesson by asking them to study the location of each

planet in the solar system. I asked my pupils to look at the picture about the solar

system. I form a few sentences and asked pupils to show which the planet that I had

mentioned is.

e.g The sun is between the Mercury and Venus.

The Jupiter is above the Venus.

The Uranus is next to the Neptune, etc.

Finally, I divide them into group of six and gave each group a board game. I read

and explain the rules of the game. To make them understand well, I demonstrate how

to play the game. They were very excited as loud of noise heard when there are

asked to start the game. I can see they were excited through their face. I noticed that

my pupils were involved actively and help each other to answer the questions.

However there are still two groups that looks confused and do not know what to do

with the game. When I asked them, why they are not play the game like the other

group. They looked at me and said that they are not very sure about the rules. I

realized that, there are still some weaknesses on my part in delivering the message.

So, I explain again to both groups, do demonstration and ask them to play while I

monitor their progress. Finally, they were understood and they seem so happy

playing the game as they were very clear on how to play it.

World Of Knowledge : Unit 10 Unity in Diversity

My teaching and learning process for today’s lesson is focusing on Listening and

reading. The topic is about Unity In Diversity (Yr 4 Textbook, pg 93).During the

third lesson, I also teach my pupils by using the textbook to explain about the

prepositions. Pupils learn another three prepositions which were beside, next to and

near. This time it was easy to teach the prepositions because lots of inputs were

given to them. Pupils have gone through the learning process, do the interactive

activity, playing a board game, do the group activity and take part in questions and

answer session. In the third lesson they also played the board games with their group

members. Most of the pupils take part actively in the activity. Only one group did

not performed well in the. Through my observation, all the groups put lots of effort

to play the game and they really enjoyed the game. The pupils responded very

positively to the board game activity “We want more and more activities”, one of the

pupil said. “Teacher, can we do it again?” said another. I felt that I had achieved my

aim to make the grammar lesson fun to learn through game and able to enhance their

grammar skill in prepositions. There was a positive change in pupils’ attitude

towards learning grammar.
