In my opinion, this standard primarily recognizes the important role assessment plays in

instructional planning. It is crucial for teachers to use assessment as a way to reflect on their

teaching and how to adapt it to better meet their students individually diverse needs. There are a

variety of possible assessment strategies, ranging from the traditional multiple-choice exam to

inquiry-based projects to simple informal observations. However, not only can the results from

each of these assessments be used to modify teaching, but they can also be used to assess how

students are progressing through both the unit as well as the curriculum. While one student may

present their knowledge more effectively through a multiple-choice test, another student may

relay their knowledge better by displaying it in a presentation. This demonstrates the importance

of using a mixture of assessment tools. Overall, this standard wants me to recognize the

importance of using the results of student assessment to further accommodate their needs

    through instruction.

I chose a lesson plan describing a worksheet as the primary form of student assessment as

the artifact for this standard. For this particular lesson plan, students will be formally assessed

with a worksheet. This worksheet will simply have approximately ten blanks where the student

can record the vocabulary words they remember from the story read. Earlier in the lesson, the

student was provided with magnetic letters to use as help in spelling high-frequency words listed

by the teacher. By having the student use the magnetic letters, the student can practice

connecting letters with their corresponding sounds. Therefore, the worksheet works as an

assessment tool to see if using the magnetic letters beforehand helped the student remember any

of the high-frequency words and how to spell them. Overall, this demonstrates my understanding

of how to select, construct, and use assessment strategies and instruments for diagnosis and

evaluation of learning and instruction. While writing this lesson, it was necessary to select and

construct an assessment strategy that would effectively measure the individual students learning

of high-frequency words. Furthermore, utilizing the worksheet to evaluate the effect the

magnetic letters had on spelling high-frequency words uses assessment results to diagnose

students learning needs, align and modify instruction, and design teaching strategies. For

example, if the student could not accurately list a majority of the high-frequency words from the

story, then another teaching strategy must be implemented in place of using the magnetic letters.

Although the lesson plan has been used in practice, the assessment strategy for this

specific lesson has not. However, considering how to effectively assess student progress is a vital

component of instructional planning. Therefore, this assignment will significantly impact my

teaching in the future. I now have a better understanding of how to use assessment tools, other

than a traditional multiple-choice test, as a sufficient way to monitor student progress. Also, I

have a better understanding of assessment, in general, by reflecting upon possible changes to

further meet the standard. For example, while both formal and informal assessments are

previously implemented into this lesson, self-assessment activities should also be utilized to help

students become aware of their strengths and needs on their own, encouraging them to establish

    personal learning goals.

By considering student assessment for a specific lesson, I feel more prepared to teach and

learn in a diverse society. Diverse can be defined in multiple ways. For one, it can be

interpreted as an ethnically and racially diverse environment. However, it can also be interpreted

as an academically diverse environment. By considering this students diverse learning needs

during instructional planning, I now understand how to adapt assessment tools to meet individual

needs. Furthermore, learning to use a variety of assessment tools, varying from formal

worksheets to informal observations to self-assessment, will help prepare me as a prospective

teacher to provide the best education for an academically diverse group of students. I look

forward to using this knowledge in my future and am confident that my future experiences will

further build upon these understandings as well.
