Technology STANDARD 6 - Telecommunications and Information Access: The competent

teacher will use telecommunications and information-access resources to support

instruction.

6A. Knows how to access telecommunications resources to support instruction.

6B. Accesses and uses telecommunications tools and resources for information sharing,

remote information access and retrieval, and multimedia/hypermedia publishing.

6D. Uses automated, on-line search tools and intelligent agents to identify and index desired

information resources.

1.  Fully state the standard in bold text. Then write a paragraph explaining your knowledge and

understanding of the standard  —

put the standard into your own words.

This standard is about how I, as a professional educator will use telecommunications and online

resources to support my instruction. It says that I will know how to use these resources in a way

that will better my classroom instruction and my student learning. Accessing and using these

online tools will aide in information sharing, information access, and information retrieval, and

will in include multimedia publishing as well. Lastly, this standard is about using online search

tools and agents to identify and index relevant informational resources.

2.   Explain how the artifact you chose demonstrates your understanding and application of the

standard.

This website that I formulated was an addition to a unit plan about pumpkin seed life cycles that

I developed for a second grade science class. This website is directed at being a tool for students

to use when they are at home. It encourages them to think more deeply about the pumpkin seed

life cycles, and reminds them of the things taught in class that day. The artifact shows that I can

use telecommunication and information-access resources to support my instruction. This website

shares information with the students while including multimedia resources as well. It is an

online tool that provides students with information that they need to know on the topic indexing

it in one specified location that all students can access. It can also be a tool that is used to

communicate with families virtually so they may see what is happening in their students’ science

unit.

3.   A If the artifact has been used in your practice, reflect on how your teaching will change in

the future to further meet the standard.

B If the artifact has not been used in your practice, i.e., a class assignment, reflect upon how

your teaching will be impacted by the assignment.

This artifact has not been used in my practice, however, as a result of completing the assignment,

I feel more prepared to provide my students with unique forms of unit summaries. This website

has shown me how easy it can be to communicate electronically with families as well as

students. With technology becoming such a huge component of today’s youth, knowing how to

reach students in that way will prove to be beneficial and effective in the future. Remaining

updated with resources such as Glogster, I will be able to easily and efficiently provide students

with the educational material that they need right there on one website.

4.  Conclude with a paragraph discussing how you are more prepared to Teach and Learn in a

Diverse Society as a result of satisfactorily meeting the standard.

As a result of completing this activity, I do feel more prepared to teach and learn in a diverse

society. This standard helps me to recognize the importance of telecommunication and internet

resources in reaching the minds of my students no matter what age, gender, race or socio-

economic status. All students are able to pull up a classroom website at a public library or even

in the school computer lab. This will be a way for me to reach the lives of my students using a

means that they will appreciate and be able to relate with.
