SCIENCE IN ANCIENT INDIA
We built mighty civilisations thousands of years ago when
most people in Europe lived in forests.
In Indus valley civilisation there was an excellent town
planning system
We made outstanding scientific discoveries
Decimal system and zero were ancient India's inventions
Plastic surgery was invented in India in the 6th century B.C.

ENHANCING QUALITY RESEARCH IN HIGHER EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS : KEY FACTORS
Role of teachers
Role of students
Role of management
Role of government
WHAT KEY STEPS THAT MUST BE TAKEN TO ENSURE QUALITY RESEARCH IN HIGHER EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS
To embrace autonomy and meritocracy
Regular orientation programmes and refresher courses
Project proposals to funding agencies
Enhance interaction between our universities and
universities outside
Need for exchange of faculty and exchange of
students
Access to journals
To publish more research papers
Awards to publications in refereed journals
Paper presentations in National/ International seminars Post-doctoral research works (PDF)
Sabbaticals
More patent minded works
Industry institution linkage
Creating science foundations
Creating centers for excellence
PROBLEMS PERTAINING TO OUR COUNTRY (NEED TO BE SOLVED)
Population explosion
Health and Hygiene
Nutrition
Shelter
Carbon emission
Productivity in agriculture
Safe drinking water
Waste disposals
Energy conservation
Road safety
What more could be done to improve research levels in India? I have always felt that for research to improve, students need to be exposed to the very best research at an early stage. One change over the last several decades is that individual universities have lost ground to large research institutes. It would be a good idea to embed research institutes inside university campuses, and perhaps also integrate research more into universities. There also needs to be a strong emphasis on merit in selection of students and faculty, and scientists need to be free to pursue their work free of any local politics. Finally, education should be valued. Many of my teachers were not great research scientists but were excellent teachers, and I am grateful to them.
NEWTON’S WORDS
The greatest discovery of Newton is the gravitational force. Newton always wondered at the absence of a gravitational repulsive force. Such puzzles and wonders made him realize the limitations of his model. This is clearly seen when he said, ”I am like a child playing on the shore with pebbles and shells while whole ocean lies before me”
““Education is the Education is the manifestation of manifestation of perfection already in perfection already in the man”the man”
