Refractory Repair & its procedure

There are 03 types of refractoriescast-able

firebricks

ceramic fiber

Is there any document/standard/code/rule of thumb that shows the repair procedure for each of the refractory type or can answer these questions ?

if there is certain dimension deep crack then it should be replaced or re-used after repair or allowable ?if there is certain dimension length crack then these are the line of actions ?if the length to width ratio of crack is this then these are the corresponding moves ?if there are ----------- number of cracks in the----------- square meter area then this patch should be replaced or repaired to that much adjacent anchors ? & many more ?

API 936 is used for repair but it doesn't show these answers ?Best Regards:AHTSHAM AHMADMechanical GTE Engro Fertilizer LimitedEmail: [email protected]: 0092.332.6040290

Dimensional inspection and repair is the responsibility of inspector. Inspector himself assess the integrity of refractory using his experience. Most of the companies having refractory as their core business have developed inspection and repair procedure. Normally, any cracks with depth nearly the thickness of refractory are unacceptable. Regarding length, depth has to be assessed. If depth exceeds the allowable limit as prescribed earlier then any length of the crack is unacceptable. These are some of the points I have in my mind through experience and going through different procedures.

Cracks in refractory are inspected in order to assess that they are surface cracks or the ones requiring repair.Surface cracks are:a. Hair line cracksb. Less than 3 mm in widthAll cracks other than these have to be repaired.

Normally length or depth of the crack cannot be ascertained. We also follow the width of the crack, how tight or wide that is. If the cracks are hairline ones, they are not considered to be repaired however if the width of the cracks is 2 mm or greater, we always recommend repair. An area of more than 2 sq. ft. is

repaired in the same way as we install the refractory. However patch work is done for the areas lesser than 2 sq. ft.

Normally the criteria defined by meholor and arcpro stands true. Just adding to it, if you find a crack with a width less than 3 mm it is acceptable. However, wider cracks need repair. While repairing many contractors prefer a cosmetic repair which gets peeled off eaily after the refractory is put back to operation. Therefore, once you have identified the repair, the hot layer of the refractory shall be chipped off and refilled with new refractory.
