REFRAMING BREAD

Food for thought…

Page 2: Reframing bread

For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been told by my mother never to play with my food so this week’s challenge was a tough one! The whole thing was done in the privacy of my room, doors and windows bolted shut of course! I chose sliced bread for the mission, the goal was to create a “mode board” with our favorite shapes.

Cutting up bread

into different shapes sounds pretty easy and uncomplicated enough but the thought of reframing food into art was enough to give me a pause. So after a few cuts, I put the scissors down and ponder…

The cutting resumes.

I try not to waste breads. The basic shapes are easy enough but lets see how the rest of it goes….

I’ve got a circle, a

square, a triangle, a semi-circle and a rectangle. Mabel says she loves circles and that’s because all her favorite things come in circles. Things like the moon, polka dots and pancakes.

A few more shapes

have been added. You can see a heart shape there. It took 2slices to get that perfect shape!

I’m done cutting. Now I’m

placing the shapes on the board. The fabric that acts as the backdrop is called “Adire”, a local tie and dry fabric that is particularly popular in these parts. My favorite shape has got to be the Star! It was the most difficult to achieve( 3bread slices) and to me, it stands out!

The curious shape

beneath the star is an oval. I like to think of it as the all seeing eye…some of my favorite things are oval. Eggs included!

All done! Just

adjusting their settings on the board and we are good to go. Hard to believe that this all bread sans the board of course.

The alphabet was

just an after thought. A prequel to a new career in bread carving perhaps?

Bread, a meal made from

dough of flour has always been known as food. This challenge opened us up to the fact that it could be more. Art being just one of the many other fabulous ideas I’m certain my classmates will come up with. So in reframing bread, instead of bread is food, we say, bread is art!
