President Tony Tan Keng Yam visits the Supreme Court March 2014 Times flies…we are now in the month of March 2014 which will soon conclude the year’s first quarter, and what it quarter it has been! March 2014 marked the first official visit by His Excellency President Tony Tan Keng Yam to the Supreme Court of Singapore. His Excellency, President Tony Tan Keng Yam, visited the Supreme Court on 5 March 2014. This marked the President’s first visit to the Supreme Court, who was keen to understand more about the work of the Supreme Court. 1. Turn off taps tightly to ensure they do not drip. 2. Regularly check faucets and pipes for leaks. 3. Take shorter showers. Turn off the shower tap while soaping. 4. Don’t let water run while brushing your teeth, shaving or washing your face. A world of enchanting movie magic welcomed more than 100 staff, their friends and families at the Supreme Court Family Day at Universal Studios on a fine and clear Saturday morning on 22 February 2014! DELEGATION FROM THE SUPREME COURT OF THE REPUBLIC OF THE MALDIVES A delegation of judges from the Supreme Court of the Republic of the Maldives, Justice Abdul Ghanee Mohamed, Justice Dr. Azmiralda Zahir, Justice Abbas Shareef and Justice Ali Sameer, visited the Supreme Court on 13 March 2014 for a courtesy call on Justice Quentin Loh. The delegation was briefed on case management by AR Wang Baochen as part of their training programme to learn about the judiciary system in Singapore. After a decade of distinguished service on the Bench, Justice Andrew Ang retired on 26 February 2014. CJ Menon and members of the Bench held a farewell dinner for Justice Ang on 19 February 2014 where CJ congratulated Justice Ang on a remarkable legal career that spanned 43 years. As we brace ourselves for the dry and hot weather, let us remember the upcoming World Water Day on 22 March 2014 and take the extra mile to use water wisely. Here are some useful tips to conserve water in your daily life. To offer the President with a better understanding of the Supreme Court, OPA arranged for the President to tour the building and be briefed on the legal system and Judiciary. The President also engaged CJ Menon and the Judges of Appeal in a dialogue on social developments and the Courts. To cap the visit, CJ Menon hosted the President to lunch with the Bench. From a delightful river cruise through the sights and sounds of Madagascar, an exhilarating ride on the Battlestar Galatica, a heart-stopping escape from the Revenge of the Mummies, to the Shrek 4D Adventure and a dazzling pyrotechnic Waterworld show, it was a memorable day for family togetherness and staff camaraderie as they witnessed the silver screen brought to life before their eyes at different activities around Universal Studios. In the evening, an incredible fireworks show burst across the night sky in a kaleidoscope of colours, concluding a truly magical Family Day for one and all! The Supreme Court expresses its deep appreciation for Justice Ang’s invaluable contributions and wishes him a long, happy and fulfilling retirement. UPCOMING VISITs Visit by Dr Karl Mackie, Chief Executive of the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR), International Dispute Resolution Centre Dr Karl Mackie, Chief Executive of the CEDR, will be visiting the Supreme Court of Singapore on 24 March 2014 for a courtesy call on CJ Menon. Dr Mackie is recognized as one of the leading mediators in Europe and experts on mediation, conflict and negotiation. Visit by delegation from the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka A delegation of judges from the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka will be visiting the Supreme Court of Singapore on 9 April 2014 for a tour and a deeper insight into Singapore’s judiciary system. Visit by the National Judicial Academy of Nepal A delegation of senior judicial officers from the National Judicial Academy of Nepal will be visiting the Supreme Court of Singapore on 10 April 2014 as part of a study of Singapore’s judicial academy and court administration system. 5. Use your dishwasher and clothes washer only for full loads to optimise water conservation. For partial loads, adjust water levels to match the size of the load. 6. When washing dishes by hand, don't leave the water running for rinsing. Fill one basin with wash water and the other with rinse water. 7. Soak pots and pans instead of letting the water run while you scrape them clean. 8. Wash your fruits and vegetables in a basin of water instead of running water from the tap. 9. Collect rinse water from the clothes washer to mop the floor or wash your car. 10. Use a bucket of water to wash your car rather than continuously running a water hose. Times flies…we are now in the month of March 2014 which will soon conclude the year’s first quarter, and what it quarter it has been! March 2014 marked the first official visit by His Excellency President Tony Tan Keng Yam to the Supreme Court of Singapore.

His Excellency, President Tony Tan Keng Yam, visited the Supreme Court on 5 March 2014. This marked the President’s first visit to the Supreme Court, who was keen to understand more about the work of the Supreme Court.
