HISTORY OF THE CIVIL WAR IN SYRIA ▸ More than 250,000 Syrians have lost their lives in

four-and-a-half years of armed conflict, which began with anti-government protests before escalating into a full-scale civil war. More than 11 million others have been forced from their homes as forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad and those opposed to his rule battle each other - as well as jihadist militants from Islamic State.

WHY PEOPLE LEAVE SYRIA

▸ The civil war in Syria as has been going on for the last 4 years, and it does not seem like ending.

▸ Many people have lost family members or other loved ones.

▸ Many people have also lost their jobs and their livelihoods.

▸ They are also leaving to escape from their own deaths. It is dangerous for anyone in Syria.

▸ Everyone is affected by the civil war.

Page 9: REFUGEE WEEK MONDAY SYRIAN REFUGEES. PROLOGUE 1 SYRIAN REFUGEE WEEK

Lots of people have lost their original jobs … They are starting whatever they can, my neighbour used to run textiles factories and now he is selling bed-shawls and diesel at the market.

A Syrian still there.

SO WHERE ARE THEY GOING

▸ They go to places in neighboring countries like Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan into camps to stay until the end of the war.

▸ Some have tried to cross the ocean to get to Italy and Greece from Lebanon.

▸ Recently, one boat landed on the "Sovereign Base Area" in Cyprus, meaning that the first country of arrival was Britain - because they landed on Territory that is part of the U.K.

▸ For those in the camps life is not what they expected.

LIFE IN THE CAMPS

▸ Life in the camps is not much better as the local countries have little money.

▸ Many other countries have not given enough money to the camps to keep them in a good state.

▸ In the camps there is very little food or water. People are living in tents and children have to be wrapped up in blankets to keep warm.

SO WHAT DO THEY DO NEXT?

▸ Many stay in the camps to wait out the war. It may be hard but they are in an area they trust. These people will return to Syria when the war is over.

▸ On the other hand, many go to Europe to find a better life. These people may not return to Syria when the war is finished because they may have built new lives in Europe

▸ Some people believe that the refugees should not leave the camps. Others think that they should be allowed to go to Europe.

▸ What do you think?

DEFINITIONS▸ Schengen area - made of 26 countries within the

European Union, it is an area where no passport controls affect where people can go.

▸ Greece financial crisis - right now Greek banks have no money in them. They are struggling to pay their debts.

FROM THE CAMP TO SERBIA VIA GREECE

▸ The journey to Greece can go across the Mediterranean Sea, which is very dangerous, or go via the land, which takes a lot longer.

▸ Greece is not a great place to be because of the Greek financial crisis, so there is an incentive to move on.

▸ And when they arrive in Serbia they are stuck at the border.

Page 22: REFUGEE WEEK MONDAY SYRIAN REFUGEES. PROLOGUE 1 SYRIAN REFUGEE WEEK

WHAT NOW?▸ The Serbians do not want them in

their country and eventually they are moved on to the next county.

▸ Their plan is to get to Germany but from behind this fence they can't go anywhere. They have to wait for trains or free buses to collect them.

▸ But while waiting for the transport, many of the refugees have died of exposure to the cold and wet. They have to live in cardboard boxes, or just sit in the rain, as very few people in Serbia want to help the refugees.

EVEN MORE WAITING

▸ Finally the refugees have found a hole in the fence or been moved on by the government.

▸ Now in Hungary, the Hungarians want them out as soon as possible, which local politicians have made very clear. They are often sent to stations to wait for trains that never come, surrounded by military personnel.

▸ Others are just marched by the army straight to the border with Austria

ARRIVAL IN GERMANY

▸ Once the refugees arrive in Austria they choose different paths, some go to Spain and France and other Schengen area parts of Europe.

▸ Many go to Germany. Some to stay with relatives, whilst others have to make a new life from scratch.

▸ The world they are in now seems so completely different from Syria. Their journey has been 3500 km or 2200 miles.

Page 29: REFUGEE WEEK MONDAY SYRIAN REFUGEES. PROLOGUE 1 SYRIAN REFUGEE WEEK

ALL THEY WANT IS SAFETY AND TO WORK. WE TAKE THESE THINGS FOR GRANTED.THEY JUST NEED HELP.

WHAT IF IT WAS YOU?

▸ How would you feel if you had to leave your country, home, friends, family?

▸ How would you feel if every country you went to closed their doors to you?

▸ How would you feel if no-one wanted to offer you a place of safety?

▸ How would you feel without a home, food, clothing, water?
