William Fife III, the third generation of a boat-building dynasty based at Fairlie on the Firth of Clyde, began building yachts in 1890. He soon surpassed the achievements of his father and grandfather and became one of the top yacht designers of his day, designing the America’s Cup challengers Shamrock I (1899) and Shamrock III (1903) for grocery and tea magnate Sir Thomas Lipton.

After the creation of the first International Rule in 1906, Fife III became a prolific designer of Metre boats launching Mariquita in May 1911 for the owner Mr AK Stothert. Mariquita joined three other 19-M – Octavia, Norada and Corona – in a new class whose speed and elegance caught the imagination of the sailing public in the heady years of racing before the First World War.

With a career spanning over a century, Mariquita combines Fife’s refined design aesthetic with the high construction qualities of his celebrated yard. The 19-M Class is slightly smaller than most Big Class cutters and fulfilled the aspiration to have a matched class of big cutters. As a racer she had a distinguished record, winning the King’s Cup at Cowes before being decommissioned in the 1930s.

After four decades as a houseboat, stripped of her rigging and sails, Mariquita was rescued from her mud berth and the painstaking task of restoring her to racing condition began. Although her spars and lead keel were lost, her fabulous original interior remained. It took three years at Fairlie Restorations to restore the yacht to Lloyd’s Register standards and to her 1912 configuration, which provided some speed enhancement over the initial design of 1911.

Relaunched in 2004, Mariquita set sail again taking part in countless

regattas including Monaco Classic Week, the Fife Regatta, Régates Royales Cannes and Les Voiles de

Saint-Tropez.

In 2014, Mariquita was victorious, winning the Panerai Big Boat Trophy from

Moonbeam IV. In 2015 she returned to Cowes to compete in the Royal Yacht

Squadron Bicentennial. She also won the Big Boat Class at the

BCYC Panerai Classic Yacht Challenge, and the Westward

Cup from from the schooner Eleonora. Much admired on the classic yacht racing circuit and the only remaining 19-M in full commission today, Mariquita

is now looking for a new custodian to start the next

chapter in her story.

Mariquita’s landmark restoration took three years. She finally appeared from Fairlie Restorations in 2004. Her original mahogany interior was painstakingly restored to its former glory.

As in 1911, Mariquita’s principal accommodation consists of a gracious main saloon with dining table, fitted desk and sofa. A passageway aft leads to the main companionway with a starboard double cabin and port single cabin. The twin aft cabin and bathroom has a direct deck access via the dog house where protected seating allows good outside visibility. Below decks, virtually all of the original owner and guest accommodation remains.

Changes made during the restoration were few but include the addition of modern services and some enhancements such as the shower in the owner’s bathroom, which replaced the original sunken bath. Forward of the main saloon a more pragmatic approach was adopted to provide the best possible accommodation for eight crew members whilst the captain was given his own cabin. The galley maintains the original styling but has been entirely redesigned for modern use.
