ABOUT NSBE

The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), with more than 31,000 members, is one of the largest student-governed organizations based in the United States. NSBE comprises more than 400 chapters for collegiate, pre-collegiate and professional members in the United States and abroad.

NSBE had its genesis in April 1975 at Purdue University, in what is now the Society’s Region 4. NSBE’s founders were six highly motivated young engineering students: Anthony Harris, Brian Harris, Stanley L. Kirtley, John W. Logan Jr., Edward A. Coleman and George A. Smith. In 1976, NSBE was incorporated under Section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code as a nonprofit organization in the State of Texas.

The NSBE Torch symbolizes our everlasting burning desire to achieve success as engineers in our present society. The lightning bolts represent the striking impact that will be felt by the society and industry as a result of the contributions and achievements made by the National Society of Black Engineers.

NSBE MISSIONTo increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.

ABOUT REGION 4

)1976( Founding NSBE Chapter: Purdue University

Region 4 consists of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Wisconsin, Central Canada, Central Africa, and East Africa. The National Society of Black Engineers refers to Region 4 as the “Mother Region,” because that this prestigious organization began in West Lafayette, Ind., in 1975.

As of January 2016, Region 4 consisted of 2,145 members. This membership includes 33 lifetime members, 2,028 collegiate members (48 chapters), 243 professional members (12 chapters) and 422 pre-collegiate members (38 chapters). We also are excited to announce that our regional grade point average is now at 3.163/4.0. For the 2016–2017 academic year, Region 4 has much to be excited about. Our Fall Regional Conference will be held this year in the “Windy City” (Chicago, Ill.). Also, as a region, we will be preparing for the Annual Convention which is in Kansas City, Mo.

To continue to fulfill NSBE’s mission, we will pursue our regional goals for the 2016–2017 school year, which are to improve membership experience and to expand our reach. To improve membership experience, Region 4 is committed to making the Region 4 Executive Board more transparent to the region by visiting all chapters, personalizing our communication with chapters and highlighting membership success throughout the year. To expand our reach, Region 4 is working to increase the percentage of NSBE members among African Americans in engineering and to improve upon and begin our relationships with the pre-collegiate and community college chapters in our region. Fulfilling our regional goals will help NSBE reach its primary strategic plan goal of graduating 10,000 African American engineers annually by 2025.
