2019 REGION 9 SUPERINTENDENT OF THE YEAR

DR. TYLOR CHAPLIN BURKBURNETT ISD

Dr. Chaplin has served as Superintendent of Burkburnett ISD for the past three years. The Board of Trustees nominated him as Region 9’s Superintendent of the Year, commenting that, “He has exhibited his leadership skills by establishing a culture of collaboration and a climate of shared ownership of learning, reflective of his belief that, ‘Leadership is an Action, not a Title.’” He makes it a priority to get the community involved in the schools, and also gets the learners and staff more involved in the community. The nomination continues, “Dr. Chaplin inspires a culture across BISD that emphasizes learner success as our first priority….He builds strong “people first” relationships throughout the District, community, state, and nation….Under his leadership, our Board has delved deeper into our Vision, Mission and Beliefs.”

2020 REGION 9 TEACHERS OF THE YEAR

KEVIN HUNTER, ELEMENTARY TEACHER OF THE YEAR

SHIVE ELEMENTARY, VERNON ISD

Mr. Hunter has taught at Vernon ISD for 13 years, serving as a tennis coach at the high school before moving to a classroom teacher at Shive Elementary four years ago. In 2016, he started a character-building program for young men called T.I.E. (Transforming, Improving, Excelling) Club. Through this program, young men learn etiquette, proper dress, and leadership skills that prepare them for life beyond the classroom. The participants have developed a sense of pride and confidence in themselves. Due to its success, other schools in Texas and Oklahoma have instituted the program as well.

Mr. Hunter has learned that building relationships with students is vital to his success as a teacher, so he connects with them outside the classroom as well. He spends many hours in the community, becoming involved in places his students visit. He comments, “Kids want to go where they are celebrated and not just tolerated.” Mr. Hunter will continue touching students’ lives at Burkburnett ISD where he will serve as Assistant Principal at the Middle School.

HAYLI CASTILLO, SECONDARY TEACHER OF THE YEAR GRAHAM JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL, GRAHAM ISD

Ms. Castillo currently teaches Project Lead the Way, an engaging Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics program. She teaches design and modeling, automation and robotics, green architecture, and medical detectives to 7th and 8th grade students. The projects she assigns require an array of skills that cater to a wide variety of learning styles, giving all students the opportunity to find success at some point during the assignment. The program allows students access to real-world, applied learning experiences that empower them to gain the skills they need to thrive in college, career and beyond.

Ms. Castillo states, “Creativity is the most important leadership skill we as teachers could possibly teach in today’s world. Our students have to be creative, innovative, and unique.” She encourages them to learn from failures and to constantly try and test new ways to address the challenges presented by their projects. She continues, “It is my goal to

have them so confident in their problem-solving ability that they can … solve any issue they are presented. “

EVAN CARDWELL, NEWCASTLE ISD

Mr. Cardwell grew up in Hutto, Texas, and played football for the University of North Texas. After graduating with a B.S. from U.N.T., he started coaching in Brownwood, De Leon, and Calallen. He then pursued a master’s degree in

Educational Leadership at Tarleton State University. Before becoming Superintendent at Newcastle ISD, he served in school administration at Paint Creek ISD. He and his wife have been married for 10 years, and have two fun-loving young boys. He enjoys spending time with his family, fishing and

trying to golf.

GREG LONDON, BRYSON ISD

Mr. London has served in education for 22 years as teacher, coach and principal. Before coming to Bryson ISD, he served as principal at Stamford ISD. He

received a B.A. from Midwestern State University, and his master’s degree from Texas Woman’s University. Mr. London has a son, Guy, enrolled at Hardin-Simmons University, and a daughter, Cara, starting high school in Gruver. He enjoys helping with the family cattle operation and working outdoors in his

spare time.

TED WEST, ELECTRA ISD

Mr. West will be starting his 25th year in education as he begins his first year as

Superintendent at Electra ISD. He previously served as Superintendent at Boyd ISD for six years. He received his bachelor’s degree from Tarleton State University, and his master’s degree from Midwestern State University. He and his wife, Jamie, and

son, Bryden, enjoy vacationing in the mountains.

BLAKE ENLOW, BOWIE ISD

Mr. Enlow began serving at Bowie ISD in 2011, first as elementary school principal

for five years, then as high school principal for three years. He previously served at Keller ISD. He has a B.S. and master’s degree from Midwestern State University, and received his Superintendent Certification from Lamar University. Mr. Enlow is an

avid fisherman, and is blessed to live with his wife, Addie, of 17 years and three

children, Laney, Molly, and Jake, on Amon Carter Lake.
