02-13-16 3rd Annual Family Weekend Bowling Event

23 23 people is a good number, since there were many children and children don't really like to wait for their turn. Each family was able to have their own lane, and play as they wanted.

The water pipes at the bowling alley froze, hence there were no bathrooms available. Everyone was informed beforehand. This ended up not being a big deal, since the event was only 2 hours long.

02-26-16 Algonquin Chapter AGM, followed by dinner, Licence Certificate Presentation and Technical talk

40 The junior ranks mess at Garrison Petawawa worked well as the room allowed for separate areas for the AGM, dinner and talk. The guest speaker from Thoth Technology gave an interesting talk on their space elevator patent.

The talk was a little heavy on the theory side!

03-07-16 Chapter Board Meeting 10 Organized spring/summer events 03-15-16 Education Committee Meeting 6 Organized Science Fair, Science Olympics,

classroom, and Scholarship programs.

04-09-16 Renfrew County Regional Science and Technology Fair

30 Chapter sponsored the Engineering Awards and hosted a spacecraft thrust launcher event over the lunch period; it was well attended and generated some excitement.

The number of participants in the Fair has declined over the years, since it is no longer encouraged at the schools.

04-29-16 PEO Volunteer Leadership Conference

2 from Chapter Sessions attended were Structured Internship Program and ERC Interviews at Local Chapters. Both events well run.

04-30-16 PEO AGM 2 from Chapter “Education” on broader PEO topics and operations

05-02-16 Education Committee Meeting 5 Organized Science Olympics, classroom, and Scholarship programs.

05-07-16 Education Committee Meeting 3 Tested materials for the Science Olympics Event

05-09-16 Chapter Board Meeting 7 Updated spring/summer events and prepared first pass at 2017 Business Plan

REGIONAL CONGRESS ACTIVITY REPORT PERIOD: JANUARY 2016 to JUNE 2016 HAMILTON-BURLINGTON CHAPTER - Respectfully submitted

Overview and Philosophy The Chapter Board is committed. We will enthusiastically provide leadership, experience, skills and time in a co-operative and open-minded manner to achieve success in realizing current and future Chapter goals that benefit our members and our community.

PEO’s Core Values of Accountability, Respect, Integrity, Professionalism, and Teamwork will be basic to all Chapter endeavours and opportunities.

We invite and encourage members to: – keep in touch and check the web siteregularly– participate as you are able and when you can.

The Board continues to address the reasons for our existence; transparency; opportunities for participation; commitment; establishing continuity and benchmarks; providing guidelines and support for existing and new initiatives. Board meetings are held on a regular, pre-determined schedule - J12, F9, M4, A26, M16, J20. Board meetings are scheduled until Dec 2016. The Chapter web site is a hub for communications and used for Chapter Information; News, Events Calendar, Member pages as well as registration, including payment, for Chapter events. Board minutes are posted for members to review.

Accomplishments & Plans in Progress We continue to use our new promotional banners, generic business cards and promotional video at Chapter-related events. Chapter Policies to complement the By-Law have been produced and are available on the Chapter web site. Expenses for the AGM and CPC, both with large numbers attending, as well as the Board appreciation meeting/dinner have been significantly reduced with a different, consistent venue and format, along with increased Board participation.

Curling Rocks was well attended on Feb 22. A tour of a local company is planned for June 14.

Engagement is well under way with our ‘partners’ to provide multiple opportunities for members to volunteer in community-based organizations with positive track records relating to science and engineering. All joined us at the AGM and made brief presentations to complement display tables outlining volunteer opportunities for our members. Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair (BASEF) Halton Industry Education Council (HIEC) Industry Education Council, Hamilton (IEC) Pythons’ Pit

Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair 2016 We had more engineers than ever before participating: entry safety checks, welcoming committee, handouts and booth presence, two videos and banners, judging, prizes and award presentations.

Halton Industry Education Council HIEC has been a part of the Chapter since 1993 when they supported our Halton Engineering Challenge – this successful program ran for 17 years, and was highlighted at one time at a PEO Educational Conference. We chose to partner with this exemplary organization for several reasons, including: their career education program for every grade 8 student in Halton, the opportunities for our members to participate in well-run events (which we don’t need to organize), and their Women as Career Coaches/Men as Career Coaches events that provide our members with great opportunities in the local community.

We have our Chapter banner at HIEC events for local presence and we are listed on their web pages, and have gained local recognition as a sponsor of the HIEC Mayor’s Breakfast – a regular regional networking event. The feedback from both HIEC and our members who volunteered is excellent.

Industry- Education Council of Hamilton IEC is an organization similar to HIEC operating in the Hamilton area. It’s current executive director works closely with HIEC and was an original member of our chapter team for the Halton Engineering Challenge – he knows our members and chapter well. Our chapter members have met with IEC staff and we are finding specific ways to volunteer with them that fit their programs such as The Hamilton Code Club and a version of Engineers in the Classroom. Our Chapter involvement was highlighted at their AGM.

Pythons’ Pit We now have at least one engineer involved – with the rules, with mentoring, with sponsor networking, with the final event. Another goal is to have a Python who is a local professional engineer. We are commencing discussions with at least three other event sponsors who wish to work with us to help local engineers: – examples – entrepreneurial activities, financial assistance for Internationally Trained Engineers who are EITs in our chapter, and, promotional activities for corporations. These four activities were very successful and the participants were 100% chapter members with very positive feedback. All chapter members were encouraged to participate in all of these events. All of these activities have opened significant doors (benefits) for our chapter and our members.

Internationally Trained Engineers Internship Program At the 2015 AGM a Chapter member requested support for Internationally Trained Engineers (ITEs) in one particular area – securing a successful 12-month job experience. He and another Chapter member volunteered to investigate. A committee of five was formed, a proposal made and the Chapter contracted with an experienced professional who had previously worked at McMaster and U of Waterloo in the co-op and internship area. A survey was made of all Chapter EITs and we worked with about 12 to 15 EITs who exactly fit our established criteria (all P. Eng. requirements met except for 12 months of Canadian experience). All of these were interviewed and advised on resumes, networking and job searches. Most of them attended our 2016 AGM with resumes. We investigated the creation of an ‘Internship’ position for ITEs. Our initial work is done and may continue with a pilot, model program with local employers. All of our feedback has been excellent.

The Future To continue developing an annual Calendar of events and activities that is compatible with our mandate and philosophy. To increase member awareness, interest and involvement. To request encouragement, support and participation from PEO Staff and Councils. Planned activities include a Summer Picnic, Volunteer Appreciation BBQ, Golf Classic, Winter Breakfast, Curling Rocks, and numerous events related to our re-vamped Path2PEng program in the fall.

Excellent event which provided students an educational, fun and competitive environment to learn about an emerging technology in a team environment. Great media coverage including interview of CHEX television. Committee made track and timer. Students made solar powered cars allowing for design competition to be condensed into 4 hour event.

Expanding the event to be inclusive of the entire geographical area of the chapter was proposed, however more schools could still be invited. New schools that were contacted unfortunately did not attend due to snow day isolated to their schools.
