Statement of PurposeThis juried competition and exhibition

primarily seeks to foster the arts of the Western Christian tradition. Other artistic traditions of Christian

subject matter will be considered, also.

John and Pat Menghini are longtime volunteers for the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas, having assisted with several large campaigns for new high schools and churches, as well as being instrumental in the establishment of the Catholic Fine Arts Council.

Venue:Savior Pastoral Center12601 Parallel Parkway | Kansas City, KS 66109Savior Pastoral Center is dedicated to providing hospitality, service and support for spiritual growth and renewal in the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas. Conveniently located just west of Kansas City, Savior Pastoral Center receives several hundred visitors each year, hosting both temporary exhibitions and the permanent art collections of the Archdiocese.

Denis R. McNamara, Ph.D. is an architectural historian specializing in American church architecture. He is the assistant director at the Liturgical Institute of the University of Saint Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary, and serves as a liturgical design consultant.

BA, History of Art, Yale University; MArchH and PhD, Architectural History, University of Virginia. Author of Heavenly City: The Architectural Tradition of Catholic Chicago (2005), Catholic Church Architecture and the Spirit of the Liturgy (2009), How to Read Churches (2011) and articles and reviews in Arris, Chicago Studies, Communio, Homiletic and Pastoral Review, Assembly, Sacred Architecture, Letter and Spirit, and Environment and Art Letter. Academic specialties include the theology of liturgical art and architecture, classicism, and sacramental aesthetics. Member of the Society of Architectural Historians, Society for Catholic Liturgy and the Institute for Classical Architecture.

SUBJECT RESTRICTIONS Artwork must be recognizable and appropriate for liturgical use, public devotion or private devotion.

Subjects sought (but not limited to) include scenes from the Life, Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ; other biblical scenes, stories and characters; depictions of the saints and their lives; current and historical events in the life of the Church; depictions of the seven sacraments; personifications of the corporal and spiritual works of mercy, virtues and vices, and so on.

Modernizing of the subject matter placing Christ in a contemporary setting is acceptable, as is ethnic acculturation.

Subjects which will not be considered include portrayals of noncanonized persons as saints; portraits of living clergy or religious; works which are only recognizably religious from their titles; and scenes of the exterior or interior of churches (unless the work is illustrating an important religious/historical event or the administration of the sacraments).

CRITERIA/RUBRICSubmissions will be evaluated according to three main criteria and one general principle:

1. Evident mastery of the artistic medium employed – meeting high standards in the fundamental facets of the artistic craft.

2. Content – giving preference to those with profound subject matter of central importance in the life of the Church, particularly those in union with the Church’s role as guardian of the revealed truths of Christ.

3. Effectiveness in sacramental revelation – works of art which reach beyond a mere copy of an earthly object, portrait of a model, political statement or the technological process of its own making will be given preference.

General Principle: Winning entries will be chosen according to their ability to show evidence of an

eschatological perfection combined with a trust in the materiality of this world and the goodness of creation. In essence, the standards set for evaluation are those of Christ’s own revelation. Just as Christ’s own Body used matter to reveal God and the Transfiguration showed that Matter glorified, so the winning entries will use the materials of this world to allow heavenly realities to break forth and bring the Light of God the Father to the viewer. The decision of the juror regarding acceptance or non-acceptance of work submitted and award determination is final. Limit one award per artist. The competition and exhibition are made possible by the generosity of the Catholic Foundation of Northeast Kansas.

Eligibility: This competition and exhibition is open to any adult artist, professional or amateur, of any religious background. All entries must be original, by the submitting artist and created within in the past five years. Previously submitted works are ineligible. Limit three entries per artist.

Media and Sizes: Entries may be in any media and style that respects the subject matter. Total weight of each work should not exceed 300 pounds and must be able to fit through a 54” wide x 83” high doorway. No technology (digital or analog) requiring computers, monitors, projectors or electrical connections are

allowed. No installation, site specific, or performance art is allowed. A triptych is considered one entry.

Installation Requirements: All two-dimensional entries must be suitably framed and wired for hanging. This means D-rings attached to the back of the frame or specific frame hanging hardware and properly sized picture-hanging wire (not thread, string, rope or steel cable) of a thickness to support the framed artwork. No alligator/serrated hanging clips or mirror clips. For heavier works, cleats are acceptable. Artwork consisting of parts that comprise a whole is allowed. Unusually shaped pieces that require special handling and installation should have appropriate devices attached for handling, and should include instructions for doing so.

All accepted works must be ready to install and be able to hang or stand securely.

Shipping and Insurance: The artist is responsible for shipping accepted works to and from Savior Pastoral Center, as well as insurance while the work is in transit. While the works are in the possession of Savior Pastoral Center they will be insured against theft and destruction. All due care will be taken by Savior Pastoral Center staff, but they cannot be held liable for damage which may occur due to poor packaging, poor framing techniques or inadequately balanced sculptures. For those accepted artists who might live locally and wish to deliver and pick up their submissions in person, appointment times can be arranged.

Time Period Works Are Needed: All accepted works must be shipped or delivered to Savior Pastoral Center during the week of September 12, 2017. They will remain in the possession of Savior Pastoral Center until the conclusion of the exhibition on November 30, 2017, and may not be removed before. Unless sold, works will be returned or available for pickup during the week of December 4, 2017.

Sale of Works: Artists are encouraged to sell their works. If a work is sold at the exhibition, the Catholic Foundation of Northeast Kansas and the Catholic Fine

Arts Council will retain 10% of the purchase price for facilitating the sale.

3. Entry FeeThere is a non-refundable $35 entry fee per submitting artist which entitles the artist to submit up to three works.

4. Entry DeadlineEntries must be received by August 1, 2017. Notification of acceptance or non-acceptance to the exhibition will be emailed by August 15, 2017. Awards will be announced at the opening reception at 5:30 p.m., on October 17, 2017.

Cancellation Rights Reserved: If not enough works of sufficient quantity, quality or subject matter are submitted, the Catholic Foundation of Northeast Kansas and the Catholic Fine Arts Council reserve the right to cancel the competition and exhibition, and make no prize rewards or entry fee refunds.
