BRING YOUR ALB & STOLE!
When attending a liturgical service within the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, please feel free to consider vesting. Just
bring your stole and alb and ask the presider if you may vest and be included in the procession with any other vesting
clergy. Ordinarily, you will then be seated in one of the first rows. In some cases you may even be asked to
diaconate. Please do not feel that because you were not formally invited to vest in the announcement or invitation
that you may not vest. It never hurts to ask!
POSITION OPENINGS
Please consider and pray over:
Combined Parishes of St. Adalbert, Our Lady of the Rosary, Holy Cross and St. Stephen in Dayton
Fr. Eric Bowman and the staffs of these four parishes are requesting a deacon to be assigned. Their vision for a
deacon would be to work with their home bound, nursing homes, the baptism and bereavement teams, help with adult
faith formation and assist the pastor. They also envision the deacon helping with the forming of the pastoral region.
If you feel that you may be called to serve these communities or need additional information, please contact Fr. Eric
Bowman at 937-228-8802.
St. Vincent Ferrer Parish in Kenwood
Fr. George Kunkel, Pastor of St. Vincent Ferrer Parish in Kenwood, would like to have a deacon assigned to the
parish who could provide sacramental assistance as needed (Baptisms, Weddings, Wakes & Funerals). Participation
in the Bereavement ministry and visiting the sick of the parish are also desired, as is training of servers and preaching
at weekend Masses on a rotation. Assisting with Baptismal and Marriage preparation would also be helpful. If you
feel you may be able to help and are willing to be assigned to St. Vincent Ferrer Parish and would like to investigate
the possibility of this assignment, please contact: Fr. George Kunkel at (513) 686-1120 or [email protected]

PLEASE REMEMBER IN YOUR PRAYERS
Deacon Jerry and Jeanie Cain and their family. Jerry‟s brother Jim has learned that his previous brain cancer has
returned. He may be undergoing gamma knife surgery.
Deacon Greg Cecere and his family, especially his sister Marianna, in your prayers. Marianna remains in Hospice
and her condition is deteriorating. She no longer has the capability to speak to anyone. In addition, she had fallen a
few times and she is no longer able to stand or walk. Greg would welcome any prayers for her comfort and well-
being. He sincerely would like her to have a better quality of life.
Deacon Jon and Deb Danner and their family. Jon & Deb‟s newest grandson David Morgan Danner was born on
February 28, 10 weeks premature, at Kettering Hospital. He weighed 2 pounds 14 ounces and needed a ventilator.
On Sunday, March 3 it was discovered he was collecting air in his abdomen. This required surgery to correct which
Kettering is not equipped to do, so he was transported to Dayton Children‟s Hospital. On March 3, they performed
the surgery and repaired a small hole in his ilium. He is still challenged with pulmonary hypertension and a heart
murmur. On March 7 he underwent successful heart surgery to close up the gap that normally would have closed
during the final days of gestation. Thanks for your prayers and continued concern. David continues to have
challenges, but he is a feisty little fellow. His heart surgery went well on March 7. However, he had fluid building
up in his brain, so the week of March 18 they had to install a drain to remove the fluid and relieve the pressure.
When he reaches 4.5 pounds, they will decide when they remove the drain if he needs a shunt installed. In the
meantime, over the last couple of days, he has developed bradycardia and has had several episodes. They haven‟t
found the cause of these episodes yet, but it is not uncommon for preemies.
Deacon Tom & Dee Lynd and their family. Dee‟s brother has recently been diagnosed with cancer.
Deacon Dan and Pris Murphy and their family. Dan will be undergoing kidney transplant surgery on April 16. Also
please keep Gina Code in your prayers. Gina is the St. Veronica School Principal and is donating a kidney to Dan.
Deacon John and Mary Lynn Quattrone and their family. Mary Lynn fell on February 24 and broke her upper arm
and shoulder. She is in a sling and goes to physical therapy three days each week.
Deacon John Thamann and his family. John‟s brother-in-law, Jerry DeBrunner, has suffered a serious stroke and is
under Hospice care.
Deacon Harry and Peg Walker and their family. Harry and Peg‟s granddaughter Lauren, who is a senior in high
school, will be undergoing another major brain surgery on April 4. Also, Harry and Peg‟s son Tom is recovering
from major back surgery.
And anyone who is suffering who is not noted above and of whom I am unaware. May they know that we will
include them and their needs in our prayers.
PRAYER REQUEST UPDATES
Deacon Bob Crook returned home from the hospital by the first week of March. He is “confined to quarters” and is
catching up on some much needed rest. He is presently on medication to reduce some of the physical symptoms of
the Meylofibrosis. This is the first stage of his planned treatment. This stage will last 4-6 weeks and then he will be
scheduled for a bone morrow transplant. This will take place as soon as a donor/match is located which could be
sooner than the 4-6 wks. The prognosis sounds positive. Bob said, “I know that God is in this stressful time with me
and my family; therefore, it will be exciting to see what good things come from it.” Please continue to keep Bob,
Leah and his family in your prayers.
Joan Collins returned home in early February after two weeks of rehab at Bethany Rehab Center. Only problem is
the full length plastic body cast from below belly button front and back, over the shoulders, around the neck, under
4
the chin, and to top of her scalp...must wear 24/7 until mid-April. Please continue to keep Bob & Joan in your
prayers.
Deacon Jim Geraci had another Lumbar Epidural Steroid injection on March 18. Please continue to keep him and
Janet in your prayers.
A HEARTFELT THANK YOU TO THE DEACON COMMUNITY
I want to take this opportunity to thank the Deacon Community. Awhile back Barry had sent an email to the deacon
community asking for contributions to help a fellow deacon and family with medical expenses. The bills have been
coming in and being submitted to Barry. The community has come forth and has paid the medical expenses. This
has relieved the anxiety and also allows the treatments to go on. I want to thank all of you for your prayers and your
spiritual as well as financial assistance. God bless you all and have a wonderful Easter. I will be eternally thankful
and keep all in my prayers.

BLESSING OF THE BIKES -- 2013
It‟s time to prepare for the „Blessing of the Bikes 2013.‟ I am again coordinating efforts for the
Mooseriders to find deacons who would be willing to assist in the Prayer Service/Blessing on
Sunday, May 19th (time – 1:00 PM approx) at Welcome Stadium in Dayton, OH….rain date is
Sunday, May 26th. We are going to need quite a few deacons willing to participate in the
prayer service and help bless the bikes following the service - it is a Catholic blessing...this will
be their 13th year and the celebration planned will be bigger/better than ever.
The Mooseriders are a philanthropic organization who do much work for charity, raising funds
for the Neumann Center, Make a Wish Foundation, and quite a few other charities. I attend the
monthly coordination meetings and I report back to our volunteer deacons as to where we are
with plans. Past year‟s blessings have been extraordinary and the deacons who have participated
have come away with a feeling of being part of something spiritually uplifting. The bikers and
their families are a wonderful group of people who greatly appreciate us taking part in something
that means a great deal to them. They are always very appreciative of the „Blessing of the Bikes‟
and they look forward to it every year.
Fr Dale Peterka from Cincinnati and quite a few deacons from the Archdiocese have participated
in the blessing in past years (myself included). Because of the sheer number of bikes to bless
(the Mooseriders estimate over 7,000 bikes were there last year and they expect more in 2013). I
am hoping we‟ll be able to get 15-20 deacons willing to help us out. It only takes about 1-1 ½
hours and the reward in just seeing the appreciation of the bikers is terrific – it is always a WOW
event for me and we sure could more use help. Every deacon who has participated in the past
has come away with more than they gave to this function. If anyone is interested in helping,
they can contact me by email at [email protected].
Thanks – Greg

NATIONAL DIACONATE INSTITUTE FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION
NDICE
It‟s time to register for the longest-running continuing education session for U.S. deacons!
On Sunday, July 21 the 39th annual NDICE will begin, and attendees can expect another
outstanding session. Once again, the 2013 NDICE will be held on the beautiful campus of
Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. The 2013 session will end on Wednesday, July 24. The
theme for the 2013 NDICE is Deacon: Teacher of the Faith by Word and Deed. Auxiliary
Bishop Joseph Binzer of Cincinnati will be the celebrant of the opening Mass on Sunday
evening, to be followed by the opening keynote address by Mr. Daniel Mulhall, former Assistant
Secretary for Catechesis and Inculturation for the USCCB. Outstanding presenters have been
confirmed for this year‟s session, including Deacon Thomas Winninger, Sr. Maureen Sullivan,
and Dr. Sean Reynolds, and many more!
And once again, the hilarious Deacon Follies will be a part of NDICE! Each year, hundreds of
deacons and deacon candidates and their wives travel to NDICE for great presentations in a
relaxing atmosphere. Last year, attendees enjoyed the new dorm and dining hall, and the many
returning attendees and those attending for the first time can look forward to another pleasant
education experience.
NDICE has always been a great opportunity to share in fellowship with deacons from across the
country as well. Twenty-six states were represented at the 2012 NDICE, making it a true
“national” event.
Twenty Continuing Education Credits (CEU‟s) are awarded to attendees, fulfilling the continuing
education requirements of most U.S. dioceses.
