Learning ObjectivesUpon completing this activity, participants will be able to:

    • Appraise how the evolving epidemiology of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Gram-negative infections and C. difficile infections impact the decision-making process in the clinical setting

    • Utilize the latest evidence-based strategies for the management of serious bacterial infections based on patient and pathogen factors

    • Evaluate the role of newer therapeutic approaches when managing serious infections caused by MDR Gram-negative bacteria and C. difficile

Target AudienceThis continuing medical education activity is planned to meet the need of healthcare providers in a variety of practice settings, including large and small health systems, outpatient clinics, managed-care organizations, long-term care facilities, and academia. This activity would be especially beneficial for ID physicians and pharmacists who are on the frontline of managing patients with serious bacterial infections.

Educational OverviewSerious bacterial infections place a substantial clinical and economic burden on healthcare systems. The rising prevalence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) Gram-negative pathogens (such as ESBL-producing and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae and MDR P. aeruginosa) as well as the spread of a hypervirulent strain of C. difficile has seriously challenged clinicians. As the CDC has included these pathogens on their list of serious healthcare threats in the US, clinicians must be aware of the latest approaches to minimize the burden of these infections. Optimal management will involve multiple disciplines responsible for the care of at-risk patients, including ID physicians, infection control practitioners, hospital epidemiologists, intensivists, clinical microbiologists, clinical pharmacists, and nurses.

This program will review the latest evidence demonstrating how treatment selection should be guided by patient and pathogen risk factors predictive of poor clinical outcomes. The program will also highlight the role of the latest treatment approaches, including the use of newly-approved beta-lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitor combinations for MDR Gram-negative infections, and novel approaches for C. difficile infection.
