Introduction

Calcium-rich zeolites control naturally occurring chemical degradation in the black soils.

(1) Adsorbents and desiccants- drying agents(2) Separation processes - in gas purification, (3) Animal feed supplements, (4) Soil improvements. (5) Detergent formulations (6) Wastewater treatment, (7) Nuclear effluent treatment, (8) Catalysis(9) Decoratives – Economic importance

Aim

The basic aim of the present Seminar is to bring awareness and

importance of ZEOLITES to the society, particularly among the students

and Industries. To provide a common platform for showcasing variety of

Zeolites unearthed from India; and to create avenue for researchers for

conducting researches on Zeolites and associated mineral deposits.

ZEOLITES were discovered more than 260 years ago by the Swedish mineralogist A.A.F.Cronstedt. The commercial exploitation started ~30 years ago. About 50 exhotic and variety of zeolites with varying colors and shape are discovered in nature, many of which have commercial value. Currently, the world's annual production of natural Zeolite is about 4 million tons. In India, Maharashtra is a potential zone for the occurrence of such exotic Zeolites, especially Stilbite, Scolecite, Natrolite, Mesolite, etc. along with their cousins Okenite, Cavensite, Apophyllite etc.

Zeolites in the strict sense are highly porous crystalline aluminosilicates. They bear a negatively charged honeycomb framework of micropores into which molecules may be adsorbed for environmental decontamination, and to catalyse chemical reactions.

In addition to natural Zeolites, the synthetic zeolites are also gaining importance. The synthetic zeolites as catalysts are most widely used in industrial processes in the world, viz., in oil refining (for raising the Octane in Gasoline, the conversion of Methanol to Gasoline, etc.); and synthesis of chemicals for the need of the pharmaceutical, polymer industries etc. In addition there are many other benefits of zeolites as for the enrichment of the soil, animal feed, ion exchangers in the detergent industry, the absorption of radioactive materials and others. It is known that,

Given so many benefits and applications of zeolites in various fields the present seminar on the zeolite in India certainly is important.

Along with Zeolites the allied minerals (minerals akin to zeolites, chlorites and related minerals, silica, and calcite) are also important. The large number of secondary minerals in the lavas of the Deccan Volcanic Province may be grouped as: hydrous silicates (zeolites, minerals resembling zeolites, chlorites, and related minerals); silica (crystalline and cryptocrystalline); and non-silicates (calcite and pyrite).

Application/use of Zeolites Following are some of the important uses:
