Day One: Intergenerational Trauma & Recovery with Dr. Raven Sinclair“We’re on a journey of remembering who we are as Indigenous people and the gifts that we bring to this world.”

~Dr. Raven Sinclair

Part I: The History of Indigenous TraumaParticipants will be provided with insight into Indig-enous worldview and knowledge, as a foundation for understanding how aspects of colonization have resulted in intergenerational trauma.

Part II: Blood Memory, the Embodiment of Trauma, and Soul WoundsIndigenous conceptualizations of trauma, ethics and the connection between ethics, worldview, and trauma as well as Indigenous understandings of how trauma affects individuals and communities will be explored.

Part III: Moving Forward: Indigenous RecoveryThe final part of the day will present an Indigenous approach to wellbeing and recovery that is premised upon Indigenous ethical principles, which is aligned with the notion of personal accountability. A model for trauma inquiry will be provided.

Rebuilding Connections: RECONCILIATION, RELATIONSHIPS, AND RELATEDNESSDay Two: Restoring Resiliency and Spiritual Balance through Connectedness with Dr. Martin Brokenleg

“In this materialistic, fast-paced culture, many children have broken circles, and the fault line usually starts with damaged relationships. Having no bonds to significant adults, they chase counterfeit belongings through gangs, cults, and promiscuous relationships. Some are so alienated that they have abandoned the pursuit of human attachment. Guarded, lonely, and distrust-ful, they live in despair or strike out in rage. Families, schools, and youth organizations are being challenged to form new “tribes” for all of our children so there will be no “psychological orphans.”

~Dr. Martin Brokenleg

Part I: Culture and Helping Human service providers know clients inside and out... or do they? Cross cultural skills are crucial for youth workers and yet there is a mystery to culture. Learn what research says about helping professions and hear what suggestions might support your work with diverse populations.

Part II: Mobilizing Communities Some populations display complex social patterns that are the result of history. Aboriginal youth display inter-generational trauma but usually receive symptom treatment.

The Circle of Courage transforms the foundation conditions for Native or any other youth. Returning to traditional Aboriginal ways of raising youth will restore youth to the heart and mindset that supported survival of indigenous peoples through many centuries.

Part III: Reaching Deeper: Touching a Child’s Inner World From Parker Palmer to the Dalai Lama to the brain science of neurobiology, adults are pondering the importance of tending the inner world of children and youth. Native peoples have traditions which enhance and explore the inner world of youth regardless of that youth’s values.

Current resiliency strategies create inner strength in children and youth. This session develops a theory of creating inner strength in children and youth and explores specific activities adults can use in classrooms and residences to help children grow on the inside.

ABOUT Dr. BrokenlegDr. Martin Brokenleg is co-founder of the Circle of Courage and consultant for Reclaiming Youth International, providing training worldwide for individuals who work with youth at risk. He holds a doctorate in psychology and is a graduate of the Anglican Divinity School. He is a retired professor and was most recently Director of Native Ministries and Professor of First Nations Theology. Van-couver School of Theology at the University of British Columbia.
