Psychology of Interpersonal ForgivenessHave you ever FORGIVEN someone? Have you been FORGIVEN? What does Forgiveness mean to you? Can people be taught to Forgive? How does Forgiveness differ from Forgetting, Excusing, Condoning and Reconciliation? Although traditionally, associated with the fields of philosophy and religion, forgiveness has become a popular topic of psychological inquiry during the past 30 years. This class will begin with students’ own personal definitions of forgiveness and what it is and what is not and examine misconceptions associated with forgiveness. We will then explore forgiveness from different perspectives as well as the benefits of forgiving to the forgiver and the one forgiven.
Instructor: Suzanne Freedman, Professor in the Educational Psychology and Foundations DepartmentDates: Thursday, February 4, 11, 18, 25, 2016Time: 10:00am-11:30amLocation: Windcove Western HomeCost: $40.00. Try the first class for free and then decide if you would like to attend the class.
The Science and Practice of MeditationScientific research on meditation has uncovered benefits associated with mediation practice including better memory, focused attention, reduced stress, improved health and sleep, and increase in creativity and insight. Neuroscience methods have explored brain areas and mechanism responsible for these benefits. In this course, participants will be exposed to the scientific literature from psychology and neuroscience on meditation as well as learn about and practice meditation techniques.
Instructor: Kim MacLin, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Psychology Dates: Wednesday, March 2, 9, 23, 30, 2016Time: 10:00am-11:30pmLocation: Windcove Western HomeCost: $40.00. Try the first class for free and then decide if you would like to attend the class.
Breaking Ground on Your Life StorySue will lay the foundation in craft and motivation in writing a life story or memoir. She will encourage and guide writers at all levels from beginner to advanced to write stories that family, friends and strangers will love to read. Topics may include discovering your story, developing characters, creating scenes, weaving history into your story, using information to fill in gaps, discovering the universal “take away”, using audio and video to record stories, etc.Class time would be interactive/lecture. Students would write outside of class. I will read up to five pages of their story and give feedback.
I would want to survey participants prior to the class to know if they have already started writing their life stories or are just thinking about writing. I would also like to know if they are writing for their family or a larger audience. That will help me determine the session topic.
Instructor: Sue Schuerman, Assistant Director Development Communications, UNI. Personal historian. Certified Life Legacy Instuctor. Dates: Tuesday, March 1, 8, 22, 29, 2016Time: 1:00pm-2:30pmLocation: Windcove Western HomeCost: $40.00. Try the first class for free and then decide if you would like to attend the class.
American Rhetoric American Reality: The Idea of Religious FreedomIn the battles over Religion and Politics in America, both liberals and conservatives claim that the U.S. was born, reared, and raised in religious freedom. But what is this shared belief is an historical falsehood? What if, instead, it is a history of religious conflict? And what if that conflict involved extended periods of religious coercion and continual attempts to maintain religious power and control? So what does the idea of religious liberty actually mean? Such questions form the core of this course.
Instructor: Dr. Harold B. Wohl, Professor Emeritus of History Dates: Tuesday, April 5, 12, 19, 26, May 3, 2016Time: 10:00am-12:00pmLocation: Windcove Western Home Cost: $40.00 Try the first class for free and then decide if you would like to attend the class.
Photoshop Creativity and More This class, taught in Rod Library on UNI’s campus, will help you learn how to maximize your skills with the image manipulation software called Photoshop (and Photoshop’s open source, free alternative, “Gimp.”). This will be a hands-on class where much of the instruction is 1-1. As a team-taught class, we will cover ways to tweak and fine-tune images, demonstrate techniques to cut images out from their background, and practice designing graphics. We will stress creativity and fun. We will also help LLU students navigate any interface issues they have with their own personal technology devices. We look forward to a fun, engaging, and enriching experience! Maximum enrollment: 15 students.
Instructor: Bettina Fabos, Associate Professor of Interactive Digital Studies, with UNI Students from the Digital Collective (student organization).Dates: Monday, February 19, 27, March 4 and 11, 2016Time: 6:00-8:00 P.M.Location: Rod Library in Computer LabCost: $40.00.
