With each syllabus having been carefully designed to meet the specific needs of players and teachers, these represent a comprehensive range of materials covering both contemporary and classical music styles.

Electric GuitarFocusing on improvisation and rhythm playing skills, this established syllabus provides a structured approach to learning the electric guitar from Preliminary Grade up to Grade 8.

Acoustic GuitarThis repertoire based syllabus offers two pre-Grade 1 levels and Grades 1 to 8. Throughout the syllabus the focus is on developing core rhythm playing and performance skills.

Rock GuitarThese exams concentrate on the musical skills specifically needed by rock guitarists and start with two pre-Grade 1 levels, followed by eight levels of grade exams to Grade 8.

Bass GuitarThis syllabus starts at Preliminary Grade and progresses through to Grade 8. Covering all the skills needed by a bass guitarist to play in a rock, blues and pop group, these exams include developing bass lines, utilising bass patterns, fingerboard knowledge, contemporary music theory and ear training.

Classical GuitarThis well-structured syllabus features a variety of pieces from a wide range of styles and periods. Sight reading and aural abilities are also covered along with the development of technical skills and musical understanding.

UkuleleSix exam grades are currently available, ranging from Initial Stage to Grade 4. This syllabus provides a solid foundation of musical education for ukulele students covering both melody and rhythm playing skills.

Popular Music TheoryThese examinations offer a comprehensive and structured approach to studying the theory behind playing popular music. The emphasis is on the musical knowledge needed to improve your playing in all styles of popular music.

Performance Awards An alternative assessment

Performance Awards are alternatives to our grade exams that focus on the performance elements of each syllabus only. There are no questions relating to fingerboard knowledge, musical knowledge or aural awareness in any of the Performance Awards. This means you can concentrate solely on the pieces or prepared performance aspects only.

There are three types of Performance Awards on offer:• Live Performance Award. A candidate attends an

exam venue to perform.

• Filmed Performance Award. A candidate submits a video recording of their performance rather than attending an exam venue.

• Recorded Performance Award. A candidate submits an audio recording of their performance rather than attending an exam venue.

Why Take a Performance Award?

As a flexible alternative to graded exams, Performance Awards are an ideal choice for a number of reasons:• For students who are particularly nervous about

the prospect of going to an exam venue, the recorded or filmed options are a different way of assessing a performance.

• The performances can be filmed or recorded in more familiar surroundings and can be uploaded directly to the RGT website.

• Prior to taking the ‘full’ graded exam, Performance Awards can be a useful way of getting the performance aspects assessed along with useful feedback on areas that might need attention.

• Filmed and recorded entries for the Performance Awards can be submitted at any time throughout the year and entries will be assessed within eight weeks of receipt.

Teaching DiplomasProfessional qualifications for teaching professionals

As the specialists in guitar education, RGT offers guitar teachers a range of teaching diplomas at DipLCM, ALCM and LLCM levels.

These diplomas are available in the following subjects:

• Electric Guitar

• Acoustic Guitar

• Bass Guitar

All of these diplomas focus on the development of the practical skills needed by guitar teachers working both privately and within schools and colleges.

Exam Structure

The content of each diploma level varies, however all candidates are required to teach a lesson and give a presentation of their teaching skills as appropriate to the diploma.

Fingerboard knowledge is included as a component at DipLCM level and there are written elements for the ALCM and LLCM diplomas. Music reading components are also included at ALCM and LLCM in a style and format that is appropriate for the instrument.

There is plenty of support and advice available from RGT at London College of Music as you prepare for your teaching diploma. You can contact experienced teachers and examiners for help with any queries you have and, in addition, there are seminars and training sessions run throughout the year.

Performance DiplomasProfessional development for your guitar playing skills

For players seeking to develop their skills beyond Grade 8, we offer performance diplomas at DipLCM, ALCM, LLCM and FLCM levels.

These diplomas are available in the following subjects:• Electric Guitar• Jazz Guitar• Acoustic Guitar

Electric GuitarThese diplomas allow the development of performance and improvisation skills through a structured series of technical studies, prepared performance and improvised components. All of these elements have been carefully designed to meet the requirements of rock and pop guitarists.

Jazz GuitarThis set of diplomas addresses the specific techniques, skills and approaches required by jazz guitarists. With the focus on technical knowledge, performance elements and improvised lead and rhythm skills, this is a comprehensive programme that will develop the jazz playing abilities of any guitarist.

Acoustic Guitar Concert DiplomasThese diplomas allow acoustic guitarists to develop their playing skills through the performance of a repertoire of pieces. The total duration of the performance increases for each diploma level and these diplomas allow for a free choice of performance material, including self-composed pieces.
