DiscoveryA person-centered approach where JVS staff spends time with each participant and his/her family in a variety of settings (home, school, community) to identify interests, skills and conditions for success.

Work Experiences/InternshipsParticipants work at a variety of businesses in the community to determine their career interests, abilities, readiness for employment and required support services.

Participants try a variety of jobs which provide an in-depth assessment of their skills.

Career Training OptionsWork Adjustment TrainingParticipants work at community-based sites performing jobs in their areas of interest to improve their work performance, pace, quality, independence and communication skills.

Job Coaching One-on-one trainers utilize systematic instruction, accommodations and supports to help individuals learn to become independent workers.

Job Retention Once employment is obtained, JVS staff provides ongoing support and assists customers to develop techniques for coping with issues inside or outside the workplace that may impact employment.

Computer Training Participants learn general computer skills and obtain training in Microsoft Office as well as interactive programs for GED preparation and job search.

Soft Skills TrainingParticipants learn about workplace expectations, including appearance, communication skills, problem solving and coping with change.

Customer Service Training Eight-week program focuses on customer service skills, including verbal and non-verbal communication, face-to-face and telephone skills, and working with difficult customers. Includes related training and support to facilitate employment.

Janitorial Training Program Intensive four-week classroom and hands-on program trains participants for janitorial, housekeeping or porter positions using green cleaning techniques. Enhanced training options focus on specialized cleaning, building maintenance and safety.

Job Placement ServicesSupported Job SearchParticipants receive individualized job search assistance, including job seeking skills. JVS staff negotiates job opportunities with employers and accompanies participants on job interviews as needed.

Amazon Employment JVS provides job placement and training for 10+ individuals monthly in jobs starting at $15 per hour at Amazon’s Brownstown Township Sort Center (part-time jobs) and Romulus Fulfillment Center (full-time jobs). Individuals are provided the opportunity to try out the Amazon jobs at a simulated Amazon warehouse at JVS Detroit.

Customized Employment/SourceAmerica Pathways to Careers (TM)

JVS staff utilizes the customized employment plan developed during discovery to tailor a job to the participant’s interests, skills and conditions for success.
