Detailed design is already underway and construction is scheduled to start in mid-2019. The new four kilometre section of dual carriageway, between Altone Road and West Swan Road, should be completed by mid-2020. This $70 million project is funded by the Australian and State governments. It will enhance traffic flow and safety on Reid Highway, which is a strategic east- west route in Perth’s north. It will also complement other transport network upgrades in the north-east metropolitan corridor. Project scope To provide a dual carriageway, two new westbound lanes will be built on the southern side of the existing Reid Highway. They will be complemented by a new Principal Shared Path (PSP) for pedestrians and cyclists, enhancing local connectivity and access to the Swan Valley. The intersection of Reid Highway and West Swan Road will also be modified to include a new double right-turn pocket from Reid Highway westbound to West Swan Road northbound and extended left and right turn pockets on all approaches. Noise walls are also planned adjacent to existing residential areas. The final extent and location of these will be determined during the detailed design process and in consultation with adjacent property owners. A program of congestion relief in Perth’s north-eastern corridor has reached another important milestone, with a contract awarded to Decmil Construction to design and build the final section of dual carriageway on Reid Highway. Arthur Street Bridge Following a joint funding commitment from the City of Swan, the project also includes a new bridge over Reid Highway to link the southern and northern sections of Arthur Street. This bridge will improve connectivity between the growing suburbs of Dayton and Caversham. It will also provide alternative access for emergency vehicles, buses crossing Reid Highway and pedestrians accessing a proposed new primary school at South Caversham.
