Relational Mapping

Relational Mapping helped us to improve our understanding through a deeper exploration of the data we collected during our initial mapping exercises.

These examples of early work show a quick and rough exploration on paper to develop an initial understanding of a particular issue like green spaces and social boundaries.

This was a freer way of mapping to explore Colombes beyond the obvious physical issues and to see how they connect on a social and economic scale.

Relational Mapping

Taking areas around Fosse Jean and Petite Colombes we tried to map out places where we witnessed spaces defined by confrontation or appropriation. For example, men playing boules on a empty plot up for rent, or cyclist and motorcyclists reappropriating walkways as roads. Mapping these, and the zones of influence that radiated out from these enabled us to get a sense of Colombes contested territories

GREEN SPACE & T.O.A.D SPACE

Mapping the urban grain of Colombes identified the relationship between the current used green spaces and T.O.A.D spaces. Temporary, Obsolete, Abandoned and Derelict spaces are common within the northern industrial area of Colombes.

INFRASTRUCTURE & WALKING PROXIMITY TO IDENTIFY T.O.A.D SPACES

Indicated on the map are the key axial routes through Colombes. The primary route that serves the industrial zone runs parallel to the river. The river provides international water transportation to the neighbouring town of Gennevilliers, northeast of Colombes.

SOCIAL HOUSING & POPULATION

A mapping of the social housing and the population of each quarter allowed for an understanding of the demographic context surrounding the T.O.A.D sites. The circles indicate people who qualify for social housing support [red] placed against people who do not qualify for social housing support [green].

Mapping Local Economies & Social Housing

Page 14: Relational Mapping Book

This Mapping highlights the key areas of local economies within the Fosses - Jean & Stade areas of Colombes in relation to the key physical and potential social boundaries that exist.

Mapping Spatial Appropriation

Page 20: Relational Mapping Book

This map was focused on the appropriation of space in relation to the allotment Halima help set up in the Stade area of Colombes. Initially we looked at the allotment and the people involved in its development. This led on to an exploration of the skills these people have and how they are used to appropriate the space demonstrating this through examples.

Mapping Produce Exchange - 56 Rue St. Blaise

Page 24: Relational Mapping Book

This map helped us to understand the kinds of produce and resource exchanges which are taking place in the project Rue 56 St. Blaise. This could influence a project or act as a key precedent for how networks of exchange might work.

MappingYouth Conversations

Page 30: Relational Mapping Book

Exploring the Fossés Jean area, we were almost knocked down by a scooter carrying two young men, tearing up and down the street, flying an Algerian flag. The pair were cheered on by a large group of onlookers, all men, mostly 18-19 years of age. When we approached, they first thought we wanted drugs, or were looking for the stadium to see a rugby match, excitedly contradicting each other as to the best direction. But when we managed to convey that we were interested in the area, they had one resounding comment: “pas pour les jeune!”, “nothing for the youth”.

Mapping Residential Grain

Page 34: Relational Mapping Book

This map shows the different types of building that make up the urban grain of Colombes. The urban grain is broken down into residential and non residential. Residential is the split into apartments, including high rise tower blocks and smaller apartment blocks dotted around the area, and housing, which includes stand alone villas, semi detached villas and terraced villas. The non-residential buildings include everything else, such as offices, shops, commercial buildings, schools, churches, cinemas and government buildings.

Indicated on this map is the percentage of housing that predate 1974 for each quarter, in addition to this the ‘chomage’ [unemployment] level is shown as a percentage of the overall population. The areas that have a high percentage of old housing stock and high unemployment will benefit most from the Adaptive Housing project. This will only account for housing rather that apartment blocks as they will have been constructed after this time but are possibly in requirement of renovation, areas such as Petit Colombes and Fosses Jean.

RESIDENTIAL VEINS. COLOMBESThis drawing takes wide sections through the identi ed sites of interest [Stade/Europe/Fosses Jean/Petit Colombes], as a way of looking closer at the urban grain and identifying areas that my require action. Through each section the areas that are predominantly housing and apartments have been highlighted.

As a comparison of information a map showing social housing against non social housing is shown to in a similar section, this highlights the areas that are predominantly social housing [HLM], and my help identify sites that require attention. [Social Housing map produced by Emma Wood]
