Welcome

Unless the Lord build the house, the builders build in vain

God continues to transform each of our lives, let’s give Him all the Glory!Brunel Manor is entering into a further year of ministry offering a place of Spiritual, Emotional and Physical refreshment to those who visit and stay.

If we had been royalty, we couldn’t have been treated better. It is a very special place.

In August 2016 Christians against Poverty (CAP) hosted a holiday break for some of their clients. These breaks give people the opportunity to witness how outstanding hospitality, sensitive relationship building and the honest interpretation of the bible can impact so crucially in their lives. God was honoured and glorified and subsequently 28 people met with the Lord Jesus either for the first time or as a recommitment. Praise God!

Working holidays have grown to be breaks that really illustrate how God works through creating Christ Centred Community. Thank you to those who contribute to all aspects of this Grade II listed building and assist with its transformation through painting, carpentry, gardening, cleaning and haberdashery. These breaks are affordable and life changing. How great our God is!

The team including volunteers from all walks of life and nationalities offer their gifts and skills to guests and each other daily. As we pray for each other and for those who visit we see God intercepting and freeing broken and fragile lives. Jesus’ teaching took disciples to places of prayer; did you know that our charity name is ‘Woodlands House of Prayer’ and that

our operating name is Brunel Manor? As a team we meet daily for Morning and afternoon prayers. Team Communion is central to our weekly devotions, enabling each one of us to reach out for Christ’s forgiveness. We celebrate His eternal life in us!

As you approach the Manor and walk through the “large doors on small hinges”* the stresses, burdens and anxieties that dwell in your life will start to be stripped away. Whether you are visiting as a group, individually or as part of a Brunel led programme please be assured of an abundance of space for you to withdraw to find a quiet spot in one of the lounges or the beautiful estate. How bountiful He is!

Jesus understood how fundamental praying is to our Spiritual health, we pray for you as you read through this brochure and respond to the Holy Spirit’s prompt of participation in the life, work and ministry of this beautiful place.

We look forward to welcoming you!

Abundant blessings,

“”

We are perfectly positioned to enjoy beautiful South Devon.

Brunel Lodge is only a 10 minute walk to the South West coastal path. You can view Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s railway line or visit great attractions such as Kent’s Cavern, Babbacombe Model Village, Torquay Big Wheel, the Sea Life Centre, Splashdown and Paignton Zoo.

For those who are happy to venture further afield there is Exeter, Plymouth and Dartmoor national park. Widecombe in the Moor is a great spot for a cream tea, where you may see the Dartmoor ponies grazing on the village green.

Plenty to see and do…

A wealth of wildlife is hidden in the woodlands of the Brunel Manor Estate and, in order to protect, create and enhance the habitat in the wilder parts of the grounds, a Steering Group was formed in the early part of 2015. The abundance of trees, many of which were planted by Isambard Kingdom Brunel 150 years ago, must be protected. We believe God requires us to be good stewards of the Manor House and, similarly, we should be good stewards of the whole Brunel Estate. This means caring for and developing the natural environment here on the urban fringe of Torbay.

The Steering Group is planning a series of programmes to share knowledge and the enjoyment of the wildlife and trees in and around our grounds. Topics will be

addressed such as bees and beekeeping - the role that bees play in pollination - and the importance of protecting the historic trees on the Estate.

Similarly, a discussion about the bat population at the Manor is on the cards and, in the Spring of 2017, we’re hoping

to enjoy focussing on the dawn chorus of birds within the Estate. These and other events will be posted on the Brunel website over the course of the next few months.

SWYM (South West Youth Ministries) partner with over 200 churches, impacting over 15,000 children and young people across the South West. We have a vision that every child and young person across the South-West might encounter Jesus, come to know Him and choose to live for more.

SWYM offer churches and projects the opportunity to take on trainee youth and or children and families trainees where they get involved in work with church and community based projects whilst receiving training and support from SWYM. Every other month we gather all the students together for four days of workshops and lectures at Brunel Manor. On top of this bi-monthly training time, trainees gather each week for local cluster groups.

The partnership with Brunel enables us to offer trainees a great setting to train in ministry to children and young people. In partnership with Brunel Manor, SWYM have resourced the library (now sited on the top floor) both for trainees and guests at the Manor. It is a privilege to work together in equipping today’s young leaders who

will go on to have a life time of service to the church and world.

The training hosted at Brunel offers varying duration and levels of certification, ensuring flexibility for students. All the courses provide a formal qualification for ministry from vocational qualifications up to degree level through Moorlands College.

SWYM also run a variety of different camps and events and mentoring programmes for children and young people with camps based around activities for non-churched young people and mentoring into leadership for Christian teenagers.

A career is something you choose; a calling is something you receive. A career is something you do for yourself; a calling is something you do for God.” (Bob Gass) For us, leaving our home and our jobs in Cape Town and coming over to volunteer at Brunel was a somewhat outrageous step. However, we felt God was calling us out of our comfort zone and away from our securities. It wasn’t a reckless or compulsive decision but a matter of hearing His call and then stepping out of the boat to go and fulfil that calling. Serving God in full-time ministry is not always easy and yet, whether it’s helping with admin and Reception or arranging flowers or cleaning bathrooms or serving at the tables or helping on the Pastoral Team, at Brunel all that we do we do for Him. If perhaps God is calling you to give some of your time to the Brunel ministry, there’s an opportunity to serve Him in many capacities: as a day volunteer, a volunteer residential Team member, a helper on our Working Holidays … the list is endless. It was Mother Theresa who said, “We do it for Jesus. That is our reason for living.” May that be our adage for life.

For more information about volunteering visit our website at brunelmanor.com
