ApplicationThe RE_ 610 series comprises threerelays: the feeder protection relayREF 610, the motor protection relayREM 610 and the voltage protectionrelay REU 610. The RE_ 610 seriesoffers a basic range of protectionfunctions for busbars, cable feeders,AC motors, MV capacitor banks,distribution transformers and othercomponents requiring thermaloverload protection, short-circuit,overcurrent, earth-fault, overvoltage,undervoltage phase unbalance andphase discontinuity protection. Theprotection relay series also offersextremely fast arc protection basedon simultaneous light and currentdetection to enhance the personnelsafety of the power system.

Easy to useThe RE_ 610 relays are also notablefor their user-friendly design. Youcan freely set the relays to suit theneeds of your application and alloutputs and inputs are userprogrammable. In addition, the LCDscreen and eight programmable LEDsclearly display faults and events,allowing them to be rapidly analyzedand dealt with.

Versatile protectionThe relays are pre-adapted fordedicated applications, such asfeeders, motors, etc, and are thereforeeasy to set up and take into use. Thismeans that the basic configurationhas been determined and that justminor adjustments are needed tofully utilize the capacity of the relay.

The relays are also provided with abuilt-in multi-channel disturbancerecorder, which logs four analog andeight digital channels.

The feeder protection relay isenhanced with a fast arc protectioncapability, a feature much appreciatedin industrial power systemapplications.

High process availabilityThe RE_ 610 series offers highprotection availability, shortenedoutage and routine testing times, andquick start-ups. The RE_ 610 relaysare uniquely easy to install andmaintain. The patented plug-in designmakes it easy to fit and remove therelays, helping to greatly reduce theamount of downtime required forinstallation, testing and maintenance.Together with the relays’ high meantime between failure (MTBF), thesedesign features add availability andreliability to your industrial processes.

Plug-in designBecause the RE_ 610 relays areremovable plug-in units, routinemaintenance is quick and easy. Theyplug straight into their cases, simplyclicking into place, and a convenientpull-out handle releases them for quickremoval.

The relay case is fitted with anautomatic short-circuiting arrangementto prevent hazardous voltages arisingwhen the relay unit is withdrawn fromthe case. Once the relay has beenfitted into the case, a mechanicalsystem configures the connections sothat only those particular relay unitscan be inserted, preventing the wrongmodule being used. All these featuresadd to the safety and reliability of theprotection system.

Compact and flexibleWith its compact size and uniquetechnical features, the RE_ 610 seriesis an ideal solution for retrofits andsmall spaces. It has a small mountingdepth and no loose parts, and it isquick and easy to install in compactswitchgear, such as the ABBUniswitch.

Flush, semi-flush, surface and inclinedmountings are offered as standard.Optional mounting kits are alsoavailable for mounting the relays in19” racks or for semi-flush mountingwith straight or tilted raising frames.The inclined mounting helpseliminate reflections on the displayand makes reading the display easierunder various lighting conditions.Furthermore, the mounting heightcan be freely chosen and the relaycan be tilted. The COMBIFLEXassembly system and the use of thetest adapter RTXP18 has also beentaken into account. The size of therelays and the available mountingsystems make the RE610 series anideal alternative from the retrofitpoint of view.

The normal delivery mode for seriesRE_ 610 protection relays is acomplete package including a case,plug-in unit and optionalcommunication card. When a largernumber of relays are to be installed,

for example by a panel builder, itmay be more convenient to orderempty relay cases to be tested in theswitchgear, and postpone the orderof the plug-in units until theswitchgear has been installed andcommissioned on site. For thispurpose, a universal case is availablefor RE_ 610 relays.

Local and remote controlThe RE_ 610 series is based onproven microprocessor technology.Setting and monitoring can be carriedout via the rear communication portconnected to a control andmonitoring system through the serialcommunication bus. The RE_ 610relays can also be controlled locallyusing the user-friendly local interface,or using a laptop computer connectedto the front communication port.

the relay and a laptop computer. Therelays' user interface supports severaluser languages and provides youwith fault indications, fault recordingsand measurement data ranging fromcurrents and temperatures tohistorical data. In addition, its sharpand clear LCD screen and thegraphical configuration tool allowyou to easily set up your ownapplication-specific configurations.

Non-volatile memoryWith their non-volatile memory, theRE_ 610 relays record fault data andreport it even after an auxiliary powerfailure. The relays are inherentlyreliable and feature excellentimmunity to external electromagneticinterference.

IndicationsThree fixed and eight programmableLEDs enable fast fault indication andlocation. The LED indicators includealarm legend texts and serve as afreely programmable local alarmsystem, supervising important processparameters and rapidly revealing anycritical process information or faultmessages to the operator.

Integrated disturbance recordingThe RE_ 610 series features integrateddisturbance recording, which recordsinstantaneous values, or RMS valuesof measured signals, via four analog

channels and up to eight user-selectable digital channels. Thedisturbance recorder can be triggeredby a start or a trip signal from anyprotection stage, and/or by a digitalinput signal, either on the falling orrising edge of the triggering signal.

Extensive self-supervisionTo ensure protection availability andsecurity the RE_ 610 relays featureextensive self-supervision of theelectronics and software, andintegrated trip circuit supervision forthe main trip circuit. The self-supervision system manages run-time fault situations and alerts theuser to any internal relay faults. Whena permanent relay fault is detected,all protection stages and outputs willbe blocked to prevent the relay frommalfunctioning. Additionally, anindicator LED will be lit and a faultcode generated for rapid faultanalyses.

The REU 610 providesovervoltage protection

for all power system components.The relay can also be used forundervoltage protection of motorsand capacitor batteries, forinitialization of automatic busbarchangeover, and for disconnectingseparate power units from thenetwork in cases of networkdisturbance.

The REU 610 complements the REF610 feeder protection relay and theREM 610 motor protection relay inindustrial feeder and motorapplications.

Comprehensive protectionThe large number of integratedprotection functions, including twostages of overvoltage protection, twostages of undervoltage protectionand two-stage residual voltageprotection, means that the REU 610relay gives complete protectionagainst various voltage fault events.Additionally, it has numerousprogrammable digital inputs andoutputs so that the operator canfreely configure the relay accordingto the requirements of the application.

Superior motor protectionThe REM 610 handles fault conditionsduring motor start-up, normaloperation, idling and cooling downat standstill. The REM 610 comeswith many integrated protectionfunctions for the protection of yourimportant motors. The thermaloverload protection, cumulativemotor start-up supervision, runningstall protection, earth-fault protection,and loss-of-phase protection are thekey functions of this relays. Thefunction of the thermal overloadprotection can be further enhancedwith an optional RTD module fordirect temperature measurement.

The relay can be used in both circuit-breaker controlled and contactorcontrolled drives. It gives enhancedprotection, higher security, improvedprocess operation and longer motorlife. Additionally, the REM 610 canbe used for the protection of feedercables and power transformers thatrequire thermal overload protection,as well as overcurrent and non-directional earth-fault protection. Anoptional RTD module can also beinstalled. The RTD module has sixmeasuring inputs and supports PTCthermistors and various RTD sensors.
