a 2011-12 UW Mens Basketball Husky NotesWashington-UC Santa Barbara HistoryThe Huskies are 2-0 all-time vs. UC Santa Barbara but have not metthe Gauchos in almost 30 years. The two played a home and awayseries during the 1982 and 1983 seasons with Washington win-ning 72-62 at Santa Barbara on Dec. 17, 1981 and 75-55 on Dec.21, 1982 at Hec Edmundson. Husky head coach Lorenzo Romar hasfaced UC Santa Barbara three times as a head coach while at Pep-perdine. He was 3-0 in those games and last played the Gauchos in1999. The Gauchos Head Coach Bob Williams is entering his 14th

season, so he and Romar faced off once during the 1999 season.

Washington-South Dakota State HistoryThis is the first meeting between UW and South Dakota State.

Scouting UC Santa BarbaraThe Gauchos improved to 5-2 with a narrow road win at San Diegoon Tuesday. UCSB was picked to finished second in the Big WestConference, only behind Long Beach State. UCSB has been to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments after winningthe conference championship twice. Leading the way for the Gauchos is senior Wooden Award CandidateOrlando Johnson. Johnson, a 6-foot-5 guard, leads the team in scoring (23.8 ppg), rebounding (7.6 rpg) andassists (3.3 apg). He teams with James Nunnally to form a potent backcourt. Nunnally averages 18.7 ppg. Thetwo losses for the Gauchos have both come in overtime against strong teams (UNLV and San Diego State).

Scouting South Dakota StateThe Jackrabbits out of the Summit League, are 9-3 in the early season and will play at North Dakota before

traveling out to Seattle to face the Huskies on Sunday. SD State is led by 6-foot-4 Nate Wollers, who is averag-ing 20.2 ppg. Wolters missed the Jackrabbits last game due to an unspecified injury. Griffin Callahan is the onlyother SD State player in double figures, averaging 11.8 ppg. Scott Nagy is in his 17th season as head coachand is two wins shy of 300 for his career.

Huskies Last Time OutAP - Freshman Austin Rivers scored 18 points and Duke overcame a 27 for 44 performance at the line to beat Washington86-80. The Blue Devils (9-1) seemed in control, taking a 19-point lead three times in the second half. But the Huskies (4-4shook off a terrible first half and started chipping away at the deficit. They were able to get as close as six points late whenDuke, which entered the game shooting 67.4 percent from the line, made just 12 of 18 free throws over the final 2:30including a stretch where the Blue Devils made 1 of 2 on four consecutive trips. Abdul Gaddys drive got Washington within78-72 with 58 seconds left. The Blue Devils had made 4 of their last eight free throws when Andre Dawkins made two with57 seconds to go. The free throw shooting was a lot better over the final 51 seconds as the Blue Devils made 6 of 8 withDawkins making 1 of 2 with 7 seconds left for an 86-77 lead. Terrence Ross hit a long 3 at the buzzer for the final margin infront of a crowd of 15,525.

Caviezel met with the players and the teamwas allowed to watch filming of the show. UW dramaprofessor Sarah Nash Gates taught the 2-credit inde-

pendent study course and accompanied the Huskiesin New York and onto Broadway to give expert eyesto what the players are seeing.

Prior to this season, the Huskies played in November of 2007 as part ofthe pre-season NIT. The team lost a pair of games; a77-63 decision to 16th-ranked Texas A&M and 91-85to No. 21 Syracuse. UWs only previous game at TheWorlds Most Famous Arena resulted in a 72-38 routof host New York University on Dec. 30, 1941.

Dawgs Go The DistanceWashington played in a coast-to-coast tour spannedfrom Dec. 1-10 and saw them travel 5,946 miles. TheHuskies hopped on a plane Dec. 1 to make the 572 mileflight to Reno. The morning after the game, the teamcaught a 7:00 a.m. flight back to Seattle and headedright back to the Sea-Tac airport for the 2,401 mile flightto Newark, N.J. The Huskies spent 6 days in New York

City and played Marquette as part of the Jimmy V Clas-sic and Duke as part of the CARQUEST Auto Parts Clas-sic. Washington headed home immediately after theDuke game.

Tribute To Andrew MoritzThe Huskies played in the Jimmy V Classic to honorthe former coach that displayed a fighting spirit againstcancer that serves as an inspiration. Former HuskyBasketball walk on Andrew Moritz embodied thatsame fighting attitude through his own brave battlewith cancer. On Nov. 26, Moritz succumbed to histhree-year fight with a rare sarcoma -- desmoplasticround cell tumor. Moritz, 33, was a walk-on player from1996-99 who played on two NCAA tournament teams.

He was diagnosed in 2008 with his disease and onlygiven a few months to live. He spent the past threeyears fighting cancer with the same spirit he showedon the basketball court. Despite scoring just 17 pointsin 78 minutes over 34 games in a 4-year span, Moritzwas a popular teammate and leader of his squads. UWhonored his memory with a patch displaying his initialsduring the Marquette game.

On GuardWashington came into the season with one of the top-rated backcourts in the nation and early on, the Huskiesare living up to the billing. The teams top-three lead-ing scorer are guards led by 16.5 ppg from TerrenceRoss and C.J. Wilcox. Freshman point guard Tony

Wroten comes off the bench and contributes 14.3 ppg.The group is doing more than just scoring, exemplifiedby Abdul Gaddy, who is the calming influence on thecourt. He is 5th among Huskies with 8.6 ppg and is dish-ing out 5.1 apg to rank 2nd in the conference and leadsthe league in assist/turnover ratio. Wilcox leads thePac-12 in 3-pt makes per game and is also tied withWroten for 5th in steals. Ross pulls down an impressive7.0 rebounds per game to rank 7th in the Pac-12 andWroten is 12th with 3.3 assists per game.

UW Bench: No Experience RequiredThe Huskies current starting five and bench playersare stark contrasts in experience. Entering this season,

UWs projected starters (NDiaye, Gant, Gaddy, Rossand Wilcox) had a combined 256 college games undertheir belts. With Scott Suggs (84 career games) out dueto injury, the other nine guys had combined to play 23games -- all by walkon Brendan Sherrer who has onlyplayed in games that the Huskies have won by 17 ormore points. The Huskies have eight players on theirroster that entered this year having never played in acollege game during their careers, unless you countDesmond Simmons appearing in last years exhibitiongame vs. St. Martins before deciding to redshirt theseason. and dished 6 assists. His play caused Georgia Statescoach Ron Hunter to state: The key to their bas-ketball team, is that point guard. (He) controls every-thing. When he plays well, theyre going to be hardto beat. That kids really good. You can see the glitterwith the other guys, but that point guard hes spe-cial. Gaddy is returning from a season-ending anteriorcruciate ligament (ACL) tear in his left knee sufferedduring practice on Jan. 4, 2011. Gaddy was cleared toreturn to action on Sept. 7, 2011 and has hardly misseda beat. He does not play with a brace and has com-peted fully since practice started in October. Gaddy wasleading the Pac-10 in assist to turnover ratio at 3.1 (49assists/16 turnovers) when he went down last season.
