I find myself writing this message on my flight to Houston for the ISA Expo, where among many other activities, the forum for our Society Delegates to vote uponthe (3) Amendments (1. ISA name change 2. Membership dues increase 3.Reduction to section funds) will be held. Therefore, by the time you read thismessage a decision on each amendment will be confirmed. Let me remind you, however, to go to either www.isa.org or attend your next local ISA monthly meeting, for a synopsis of the outcomes.

In another attempt to lure you to our monthly meetings, this month’s topic isReliability of Jet Engine Electronic Controls. An interesting topic, consideringjust a few days ago I read an Airbus A330 Airplane plummeted to the ground afteruncontrollably dropping 1000 feet. The possible causes attributed to the crash?

Supposedly, faulty controls are at the top of the list (this is the point at which I realize it’s a bad idea tothink of such things, while I am sitting on a plane thousands of feet above the ground.) I as well as the restof the board members hope to see you all attending and networking with our consistent group of 50+members typically at our meetings.

As we look at our members, we notice all of you are not taking full advantage of your affiliation withISA. ISA provides a Senior Grade Membership at NO COST to you, in order to recognize your advancededucational preparation and professional work experience. If you fall under either of the following twocategories you qualify: 1. B.S. degree and 6 years employment in Instrumentation, Systems, andAutomation. 2. 10 years employment in Instrumentation, Systems, and Automation. Please visit thewebsite and fill out the simple one page application. This is a minimal task that boosts your resume andyou local section’s image.

Lastly, I would like to congratulate Craig Lanternier, for being voted the recipient of the Don ZeeAward. Craig will receive the award for his outstanding service to ISA and the industry. Craig is currentlythe Engineering Director for Electrical and Control Systems at Fluor, as well as held the President’s role atISAOC from 2006 - 2008. Please congratulate Craig on this honorable achievement.

Message from the DVP

Honors and awardsI am excited and exhausted from my trip to the ISA Fall Leaders

Meeting & Expo in Houston. I almost didn’t make the trip thanks to USAirways. It took me 14 hours door to door to get to Houston after my6am flight was canceled due to a fuelleak. I also ended up missing the D11meeting, but luckily we had time beforeand after the delegates meeting to gettogether and discuss key issues in everysection.

Let me start by reporting about theHonors and Awards banquet. This wasmy first one and let me say that thiswas one of the most professional, wellexecuted events I have ever been to in my life. Each award winner wasintroduced with a prerecorded voice intro and slide show. It felt like Iwas at the academy awards for Control and Automation.

MODBUS RTUmaster anddistributed I/O

North Hills, Calif. — The microNCSMODBUS RTU Master and Distributed I/OSystem from Moore Industries can be used tosend just a few, or hundreds of, process signalsbetween the field or factory floor and a controlsystem. Part of Moore Industries’ NCS NETConcentrator System® family of intelligentdistributed I/O, the microNCS providesMODBUS RTU (RS-485) master capabilities,cost-effective distributed data acquisition and, with expansion I/O, control capabilities.

The stand-alone microNCS functions asan economical MODBUS RTU Master. One orboth of the microNCS’s MODBUS RTU portscan be configured to poll other MODBUSRTU slaves with all of the network pollingfunctions of a typical MODBUS master. Thisincludes polling of up to 32 (withoutrepeaters) microNCS stations, MooreIndustries NCS NET Concentrator SystemStations and/or third party MODBUS slavedevices per port. The microNCS will handleup to 64 slave devices if both MODBUS RTUports are used.

The microNCS operates as a real-timesignal gateway by “concentrating” data fromfour or eight fully-isolated analog inputs andfour discrete (contact closure) inputs, and thentransmitting the data long distances back toone or more host DCS, PLC or PC-basedcontrol systems.

In addition to operating in a stand-alonemode, the microNCS integrates with any of theNCS NET Concentrator System’s analog,

I am proud to say that we had five honorees from our district. AGolden Achievement Award was given to Alan W. McMurry (Consultant,Bakersfield, California, USA) Southern San Joaquin Valley Section and theDistinguished Society Service Award was given to Terrence V. Molloy(CMES Inc., Novato, California, USA) Northern California Section. TheAlbert F. Sperry Founder Award went to Robert L. Moore, Ph.D., VigilisticsInc., Tustin, California. Ira E. Miller of Blair Martin Company, Inc.,received the Distinguished Society Service Award and Joseph Steinke ofCCI Rancho Santa Margarita, Rancho Santa Margarita, California, receivedthe Douglas H. Annin Award.

All of these men are well deserving of the awards. It was a feel goodmoment to see those who have given so much be recognized at the nationallevel. For more about these award winners, please see the article in theSeptember newsletter.

When it came time for the Honorary Member awards I felt like as wasat the ISA Hall of Fame. The Life Achievement Award went to F. GregShinskey formally of Foxboro, who wrote the first book I ever read onProcess Control. The Honorary Member awards went to Hans D. Baumann,Ph.D. of valve fame, & Margaret Walker, Dow Chemical Company,Midland, Michigan, USA for he work on safety systems. All three thankedthe family and companies that supported them. Hans and Margaret thankedmentors, while Mr. Shinskey laughed that when he started there was no oneto mentor him. Mr Shiskey also told a story about one of his first plant startsup. It went very well. When he traveled home he found his wife taking careof 5 kids with the chicken pox. With teary eyes he said that she was the realhero and that there was no way he could have done it without her support.

During the Counsel of Delegates meeting we had three votes toconsider this year. The first was the Name Change that was voted down lastyear. This year the name change passed and we are now officially ISA -International Society of Automation. The overall feeling was maybe now wecan move on to more important issues like better member benefits. The nextvote was to increase the dues to $100.00 per year. This also passed with thetwo-thirds majority required for the increase. With the additional funds I amhopeful that additional services to are members can be funded. Final vote

was for “rebates” and passed with 76.5%. Quick explanation: ISA used togive each section the money for the section, and then each section wouldhave the choice to send funds to the district. Many sections got no benefitfrom having a DVP and therefore would hold the funds. Also, many DVP’sdid not travel enough to use all the funds and some district accounts weretoo high and became problematic for the IRS. Now each DVP will submit abudget for travel each year with justifications and the funds will be approvedat ISA corp. How does all this affect each section? With the dues increasebasically each section will get the same amount they were getting withdistrict funds already taken out. How we voted: Nor Cal voted for duesincrease and against name change and reducing the rebates to Sections. LAand Central AZ voted for name change/dues increase and against reducingthe rebates. Orange County, San Diego, and SSJV voted in favor ofeverything.

Now for the exciting news: Members from the LA section made sureto invite me to Instrumentation 2009 on Thursday February 19, 2009. Thisevent will have training, exhibits and a job fair. They said they had over 500end users at last year’s event. I encourage everyone that can to attend thisevent. Go to www.instrumentation2009.com for more info. Nor Cal willalso be having a one day tech conference in May 2009. For more info onthat go to www.isanorcal.org. There was some friendly debate between JohnPrince and myself on which event is the “largest on the west coast”, butwith everyone’s help both events will be a great success.

SSJV and Orange Co sections have plenty going on this year. SanDiego and AZ section are working to improve educational programs. Wehad an informal meeting for 2+ hours were we discussed ways to shareeducational programs within the district. Many programs need to be updatedand we all agreed to work together and share information as each sectionupdates a programs like basic control valves, CCST review, or CAP reviewcourses.

Finally on a fun note I would like to personally congratulate TroyLeverton from the Nor Cal Section. Troy entered and won a contestdescribing why his job is exciting. Troy is just out of California MaritimeAcademy and works for RF MacDonald on Boiler start ups. ISA plans touse Troy’s likeness on a superhero character called “The Flame” toencourage school age children to join the world of automation and control.Troy is actively looking for a stunt double to pose in tights for the photo. :^)
