The mission of the St. Michael Religious
Education and Formation Program is to reflect
the teachings of Jesus through Word,
Sacrament, and Deed; to empower parents as
the primary educators of their children; and to
support and encourage the adults, teens, and
children of our Parish to grow in knowledge and
love of our Lord so they may fully respond to
God’s Word throughout their lifetime.

STUDENT/PARENT GUIDELINES & EXPECTATIONS
ATTENDANCE
Students are expected to attend all scheduled classes. If
a student will be absent, we ask parents to notify Melissa
Coll-Smith by calling the parish office at 517-627-8493.
Late arrivals and early dismissals are disruptive for
everyone, so we ask that parents make an effort to avoid
this whenever possible.
HOMEWORK AND PROJECTS
Catechists may assign activities to be completed outside
of the usual class meeting times. Often these will require
students and parents to work together. Students are
expected to complete and submit work as requested by
their catechist.
SPECIAL EVENTS and FIELD TRIPS
Special events such as Reconciliations and Family Nights,
as well as service projects and retreats, are considered
part of the regular Religious Education program.
Participation is expected.
BEHAVIOR AND CLASS CONDUCT
Students are expected to conduct themselves in a way
that is appropriate to a Christian learning environment.
Students should be appropriately engaged with class
activities and respectful of their catechist and classmates.
Parents will be notified and may be asked to be present
in the class if any student is acting inappropriately.
CELL PHONES
Students are discouraged from bringing cell phones to
class; if they must have one with them, it should be turned
off for the duration of the class. If a student uses a cell
phone during class, it may be taken away and returned
to the parents during pick-up.

TUITION ASSISTANCE
CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
Please let us know if your child has special needs. We will
work with you to make sure that your child receives the
appropriate attention and instruction.
Earn rebates toward your Religious Education tuition!
Scrip is simply a word that means “substitute money.” In other
words, Scrip is gift certificates from national and local retailers.
Hundreds of popular retailers participate in our Scrip program
including Meijer, Shell Gas, Speedway, Cuginos and many,
many others. The program is simple. Scrip participating retailers
agree to sell gift certificates to our organization at a discount.
Families buy the certificates for full face value, they redeem
them for full face value, and you and our school share the
rebate. Our school retains 14%, which goes towards the annual
school budget and helps to cover expenses to run the
program. You keep the remaining 86% of the difference. Scrip
rebates are applied to your account monthly and are not
refundable. For example:
Gift Cert. Card Amount Rebate Amount
Meijer $100 $3.00
($2.58 /86% of rebate to family: $0.42=14%
rebate to St. Michael School)
St. Michael Parish offers easy options to purchase your gift
certificates:
• Online at www.Shopwithscrip.com. Please contact the
Parish Office for our enrollment code.
• Cash and Carry/On Hand at the parish office.
Enrollment is open to everyone; grandparents, aunts, uncles,
friends, neighbors, family/friends living out of the area, etc. If
you would like to begin earning rebates towards your tuition/

Religious Education Program for children in grades K-6 who
are attending public schools or are homeschooled.
Our goal is to support families by creating a program
of lifelong faith formation that is centered in and flows
out of the events of Church life. We aim to provide an
engaging faith learning experiences and reinforce a
growing friendship with Jesus while utilizing textbooks
and activity books that conform with the Catechism
of the Catholic Church.
There are two Family Nights during which you are
asked to join your child/children during class time. In
Advent, we do a service project in which Christmas
donations are collected and wrapped in shoeboxes
for children whose mothers receive assistance from
Shared Pregnancy in Lansing. In March, to get ready
for Lent, we will have a Family Lenten Night where
children and families will do an activity to prepare for
Lent. Children will celebrate Advent/Lenten
Reconciliation in December and March.

K-6 FAMILY HOME STUDY
CURRICULUM
Religious Education Program for children in grades K-6 who
are attending public schools or are homeschooled and are
interested in an alternative to traditional after-school
program.
The first catechists in any child’s life are the family
members with whom he or she lives. As part of a
parent-led program, families complete each unit at
home using provided lesson plans and online
resources before joining the larger group of registered
families for monthly sessions. This allows children to
receive instruction at home and still be in a community
with other Catholic families and peers.
Our goal is to support families by creating a program
of lifelong faith formation that is centered in and flows
out of the events of Church life.

The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is a
unique approach to Faith Formation, founded in both
Sacred Scripture and Liturgy, and rich with the spiritual
teachings and traditions of the Church.
The Catechesis proclaims the message of Jesus
to children in an age-appropriate, hands-on, and
engaging learning environment. The image of the
Good Shepherd helps the children understand that
our God is a loving and caring God who takes care of
His children like a shepherd tends to his sheep. The
children and catechists use a special space, called
an Atrium. The Atrium offers a beautiful, peaceful
environment for our 3-6 year-olds.
If you would like to learn more about the program,
please visit cgsusa.org.
We are not currently enrolling for Catechesis of the
Good Shephard this fall due to COVID concerns. If
you would like more information about this program or
to be notified when it returns, please contact Megan
Drake.
CATECHESIS OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD
SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION
FIRST RECONCILIATION & EUCHARIST
Children are invited to make their First Reconciliation in
December. First Eucharists will be celebrated at all three
liturgies during the weekend of April 30/May 1.
All students wishing to celebrate the sacrament of
Reconciliation and Eucharist must participate in Religious
Education, either through the Parish School or the Religious
Education Program, the year prior to and the year of the
sacrament.
Required sacrament preparation is done though a family-
centered program which includes orientations and
workshops to prepare for each sacrament.
In accordance with diocesan guidelines, all students will
prepare for Reconciliation prior to preparation for First
Eucharist.
If you are unsure if your child is prepared for Sacramental
Preparation because your child did not attend Religious
Education last year, has not been baptized, or is past the
usual sacrament year of 2nd grade please contact Megan
Drake to make arrangements.
For all St. Michael Parish second graders and above who wish
to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist
~ 14 ~
First Reconciliation and Eucharist
The Catholic Church has a special process for those
interested in becoming Catholic called the Rite of
Christian Initiation for Adults. Here at St. Michael
Parish (and parishes throughout the world) this
process has been adapted for children and is
intended for families with children who have never
been baptized and/or have never received First
Eucharist.
It is an especially moving process as children
discover at a young age the wonderful gift that God
has given us in Christ through his Church. If you know
families with children who have not received the
sacraments of initiation, we encourage you to inform
them of our process and pass on to them our
contact information.
The process will begin in late September. Please
contact Megan Drake at 627-8493 ext. 14 for more
information and to schedule an interview before
classes begin.
Adults who are interested in Christian Initiation can
contact Laura Castner, Director of Adult Faith
Formation, at 627-8493 ext. 28.

Middle and High school years can be a challenging
time for teenagers. Actively participating in one’s
personal faith is beneficial in successfully navigating
these challenging waters. Having an outlet to grow and
learn from other like-minded Christian peers, while
cultivating authentic friendships and a deep faith in
God, are the key components to the programs offered
to our teens at St. Michael Parish. Our team is excited to
partner with you in nurturing your child's faith
by accompanying them in their faith development,
supplementing the teachings and support they
receive at home. We understand that faith in action
along with personal encounters with the living God help
to form young people into lifelong disciples of Jesus
Christ.

Youth Ministry
7th & 8th GRADE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
This class meets twice per month on Youth Ministry Nights in
the school from 6:30-8. Students are highly encouraged to
attend youth group prior at 4:30 and enjoy dinner at 6:00
p.m., prior to attending class at 6:30.
~ 24 ~
Grades 7&8
This class alternates between two curriculums each
year; Theology of the Body for Teens and Altaration (both
by Ascension Press). This year we will be providing the
program Altaration.
Altaration focuses on the question “what's the point?” of
going to Mass and having an authentic faith life. Your
student will explore and discover why they are here, why
God created them, and what he created them for. This
process enables them as a believer to identify a purpose,
mission, and plan for one’s life. In this process they will
come to see that there is a lot more going on at Mass
than they ever imagined.
Theology of the Body for Teens is a revolutionary teaching
given to us by Pope John Paul II. He says our bodies are
holy and good. In this program teens will discover the
beauty and purpose of their sexuality, and why it is such a
major part of our ability to love. Instead of dwelling on the
consequences of impurity, this curriculum shows the
deeply satisfying freedom that comes from having a pure
heart. The students will come to understand that Jesus’
love on the cross and sexual love in God’s
plan are related. They will be encouraged and taught a
course of action that leads to freedom and happiness.
CURRICULUM
SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION
CONFIRMATION
Class meets twice per month on Youth Ministry Nights in the
school from 4:30-6:00 p.m.
Students are highly encouraged to stay and enjoy dinner at
6:00 p.m., then participate in high school youth group from
6:30-8:00 p.m.
In the past all students 9th grade and above wishing to
celebrate the sacrament of Confirmation were required
to attend Religious Education the year prior to and the
year of the sacrament. Due to the COVID pandemic, this
requirement is waived for the 2021-22 year.
The actual sacrament formation is done through a family
centered program. This family-centered program, which
includes orientations and workshops, is required as
preparation for each sacrament.
If your child is past the usual sacrament year of 9th grade,
please contact Cary Anderson to discuss options.

Confirmation
Chosen (by Ascension Press) is a program that
complements the programs taught in middle
school. Chosen was designed to captivate the heart of
teens by compelling teachings and videos that present the
creation story all the way through salvation history. The
teens will come to realize how sacraments, prayer, and
discipleship through the lens of the Catholic faith
are the keys to a happy life. Through teachings, retreats,
service, and faith enriching opportunities, kids will be
deepening their relationship with the holy
spirit, inspiring them to be a courageous
and lifelong disciple of Jesus Christ, and living out their faith
in their sphere of influence and community of faith.

YOUTH MINISTRY DINNER
MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL
YOUTH GROUP
Meets twice per month on Youth Ministry Nights, with
middle school meeting from 4:30-6:00 p.m. and high
school meeting from 6:30-8:00 p.m. Both groups are
highly encouraged to either stay after or come early
to enjoy dinner with the youth ministry as a whole at
6:00 p.m..
The goal of this ministry is to empower young people
to live as a disciple of Jesus Christ in our world
today. Kids are searching and hungry for meaning in
their life, and our goal is to accompany them on
their spiritual journey. We offer leadership, service,
and faith enriching opportunities along
with proclaiming the good news of Jesus through
witness and word, fellowship, weekend retreats, and
local service projects.
Dinner will be provided at all the scheduled Youth
Ministry Nights. We learn in the Bible that sharing a
meal together is one of the primary ways relationships
are established, deepened, and enjoyed both with
God and with others. Think of the covenant meal the
elders of Israel enjoyed with God on Mount
Sinai. Starting promptly at 6:00 p.m., all will gather in the
school gym for some food, fun and fellowship. All kids
are welcome and encouraged to attend. We will be
sensitive to dietary restrictions, food allergies, and
Covid precautions and will plan accordingly to meet
the needs of all our teens to ensure a safe eating
environment.
Youth Ministry Nights—Sundays at 6:00 p.m. in the gym
~ 27 ~
Youth Group
These groups are offered twice per month for both
middle and high school students. Groups will meet
together initially then separate into male/female
discussion groups. These groups are led
by virtus trained adult mentors who are trained in
small group facilitation. Middle school will meet
during the weekday after school in the youth room
at the parish school. Transportation from Beagle will
be provided if needed. High school students will be
meeting at GLHS. Days and times will
be determined and scheduled according to what
meets the needs of the students interested. Each
group will consist of 8 or less students. God never
intended for us to live the Christian life alone and
these groups allow teens to live out their faith
life with their peers. These groups allow for teens to
form personal intimate relationships, to speak freely
about life, focus on their pursuit of Jesus, grow in
Christ, and be a witness to the good news.
Twice a month, Day/Time TBD
