Assessment Objectives and weightings

The GCSE in Religious Studies comprises of two units with each unit being assessed through a one-and-a-half hour examination, divided into four sections. Pupils choose one question from two for each section – making a total of four questions. Each examination unit achieves a raw mark of 48 Below is the assessment objective grid for Religious Studies. All the examination questions test and assess their ability to meet these objectives.

% in GCSE

AO1 Describe, explain and analyse, using knowledge and understanding. 50%

AO2 Use evidence and reasoned arguments to express and evaluate personal responses, informed insights, and differing viewpoints.

50%

TOTAL 100%

AO1 requires informed insight and awareness of differing viewpoints, and AO2 requires knowledge and understanding of the specification content.

How marks are awarded Each exam is work 48 raw marks. Each section is worth 24 raw marks (+ 2 more for good spelling, punctuation and grammar). Each question is divided into five parts. See below. Question 1 A = 1 Marks (AO1) B = 2 Marks (AO2) C = 3 Marks (AO1) D = 6 Marks (AO1) E = 12 Marks (AO2)

One of the most important skills that pupils must develop before entering the exam is time management. Each section is worth 12.5% of the 50% of marks available in each unit. Spending too long on one section will impact on your ability to do well in the other sections. Each exam is one hour long and you will sit four exams in total (Religion and Relationships and Religion and Medical Ethics will be sat together = 25% of your total mark). Each section should be completed in 25 minutes. Every minute is therefore worth 1 minute and this is how you should manage your time. 1 mark = 1 minute, 12 marks = 12 minutes. This strategy ensures that you spend the correct amount of time on each question, and do the best you possibly can in the exam.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I miss a lesson?

If you miss a lesson it is very important that you catch up on missed learning independently. Every lesson will contain information that you only get to learn once. Each lesson is really important so take the time to find your teacher BEFORE your next lesson and ask them how you can catch up. Speak to the pupils that were present and find out what you learnt about. Fronter has resources to help you develop your subject knowledge outside the classroom so use this resource to help you.

What if I do not understand the work?

If you are stuck or unsure about anything please see your teacher. We are all here to help you. It’s our job. Make the most of revision classes and ensure that you are attempting the work. ‘Not understanding’ is very different to ‘not doing it’. Always try the work so that a teacher is able to see that you have attempted to be an independent learner.

How can I move up a set?

Set changes have a massive impact on the structure of the classes so we try not to do them this late in an academic course. Developing a relationship with a new teacher is hard and as every class learns the same thing there is no

Page 12: Religious Education · I know what happens at an Islamic funeral. Good and Evil I know that there is good and evil in the world. I can explain what Muslims do to alleviate the suffering

12

academic reason to move pupils up to ‘higher’ sets. At the beginning of Year 10 you were set based on your current performance and had the opportunity to move in the first few months. Now you are likely to remain in the set you are in until the end of your studies. In very rare situations we may move pupils from one set to another because we feel this will have an positive impact on the learning of the whole class. Remember, in RS every pupil learns the same information and does the same exam. All of you have the chance of getting an ‘A*’!

Can I buy a revision guide?

Yes, but you do not need to buy one as we will provide you with homemade revisions booklets closer to the exam period. There are many versions of Religious Studies revision guides available to buy in shops like WH Smith, however, the majority of them are not relevant because the subject content varies depending on the unit and religion being studied.

Can I get extra work?

Yes! All extra work helps you to develop your subject knowledge and show the ability you have. Spending time learning quotes, key words or gathering examples of religious topics in the media will all help you when it comes to exam time. Feel free to practice exam questions as much as you want. Your teacher will be happy to mark your work and give you feedback. Fronter, the schools VLE has lots of work available for you to attempt at home.

How can I revise for the subject?

Completing classwork to the best of your ability Using Fronter as a resource Visiting any of the useful website listed on the next page Attending revision sessions or any other Religious Studies clubs available Watching any of the TV Programmes mentioned on the next page

Recommended Viewing

GCSE RE is all about applying ethical and philosophical issues to religion. Many ethical issues are discussed in modern media, and you are expected to show a wide knowledge of the issues present in the world today. We will explore some of the ways ethical and philosophical issues are explored in the media in class but watching certain programmes and using the knowledge you gather in your written responses will help you achieve a high grade. Here are some programmes that I recommend you watch or research in your spare time.

www.4thought.tv 4 thought is a Channel 4 programme that hosts a different ethical, moral or philosophical question every week. A range of people, some considered experts, give their opinion in relation to it. By the end of the week a range of videos show arguments for and against the issue being explored. Many of these videos relate to your learning.

RE Revision

A range of videos are available on You Tube that can help you to revise a subject. When watching the videos remember that some of them are not relevant to the specification we are studying so search using the topic titles and key words learnt in class.

Sunday Morning Live and The Big

Questions

Every week BBC 1 has a debating show that explores moral, ethical and religious topics that relate to the problems facing society and religious tradition. These shows are an example of how religious followers may discuss big society issues and can be referred to in your exam responses. (Shown on Sunday Mornings)

Eastenders/ Coronation

Street/ Other Soaps and Dramas.

Many soaps show examples of the problems facing society and religion. Issues such as, crime, punishment, abortion, euthanasia, sex outside marriage, and the problems caused by drug and alcohol abuse are regularly explored for entertainment. You can refer to the examples shown in modern drama shows in your exam.

Songs of Praise A religious programme that gives you an example of Christian Worship through media.
