A Reflection on the GospelNow that the disciples have committed them-selves to share in Jesus’ life and destiny, Jesus enters the house of Simon and Andrew locat-ed near the synagogue in Capernaum. The mother of Simon’s wife is bedridden by fever, which at the time was often caused by malaria and could be life threatening. The severity of the illness is shown by the woman’s inabil-ity to carry out her normal duty of showing hospitality to her honored guest. Jesus, being told about her by the disciples, took her hand, healed her, and “raised her up,” from her sickness. Her immediate reaction, modeling discipleship: “she waited on them.” In today’s Gospel, we are reminded to set aside our worries and look to Christ for consolation. By contrast, when we read of Job who just complains because everything has been taken away from him: “I shall not see happiness again.” We can look to today’s gospel for a way out of being enslaved by our misery. This much we know: loss is part of life. Our trials can make us bitter or they can make us better! Which will yours do for you? Blessings --

Please join us in a Valentine’s/Lenten Breakfast in the hall after the Masses NEXT Sunday, February 11 for a free will suggested donation of $5 (full breakfast). This year Lent begins on Valentine’s Day. The Lenten Gospels describe “the Great-est Love Story Ever Told.” John 3:16 in the graphic sums it up. God’s gift to us of his Son, and Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection are the ultimate gifts of love.
