started to fall and as I come to write this Editor’s le er it’s me to turn up the hea ng just that li le bit more.

This December issue opens up discussion on China and the opportuni es that we may fi nd there as reloca on specialists. Walter Vermeeren reported back to us from the Princely Mission that went out only a few short weeks ago and fi nds that yes, there is much to be gained from looking to the Far East.

Staying with the royal theme, we caught up with celebrated interna onal ar st Avi Kenan whose career spans an incredible 40 years and shows no sign of le ng up any me soon. A personal acquitance to much of Europe’s royalty, Avi is an inpat to Belgium and knows just what it feels like to set up home in a country where you don’t even speak the language...

Although the fi nal results of the Expat Explorer Survey haven’t been published yet, pre-liminary fi gures show that not speaking the language doesn’t bother as many expats this year as it did in 2010, fi nd out more on page 7.

Of course we couldn’t let the opportunity to invite you to let your voice be heard pass us by. We listened to your requests for more input into the associa on and look forward to receiving your applica ons for the brand new ABRA commi ees. This is a unique oppor-tunity to be part of the movers and shakers of the reloca on industry; don’t pass it up!

2011 has been a good year to ABRA also, we’re delighted to be able to count 71 of you as our full and affi liate members. I look forward to seeing you all again in the New Year. On behalf of all of us here at ABRA I would like to wish you a warm, happy and loving Christmas to spend with those nearest and dearest to you.

China for Beginnersview on the market abroad

Not necessarily: 2005 saw the iniaon of The China Belgium Direct Equity Fund which was created to facilitate the Belgians and Chinese invesng in each others’ countries. These investments are now starng to take shape and although the Chinese economy, with its rapid growth and very fast adaptaon to globalizaon, will force us to redefine what we offer, this is not necessarily a bad thing.

Rather we might see it as a challenge to develop an offering that will be appreciated by Chinese businesspeople and that they are happy to pay for. A good choice of new DS related services (i.e. real estate, cross cultural services, …) and a regional focus on their target countries or regions will generate business, but it will take me and it will need important financial investment.

Does a Princely Mission have any value in approaching a new market like the Chinese market, especially during these uncertain mes? “Absolutely! It is an expensive way of studying a new market but the presence of policians together with the Prince, and the support of the Belgian embassy, consulates and trade agents make a trip like this an ideal way to develop a ‘China’-strategy.

...connued on p. 6

HRH Prince Philippe and a number of federal and regional ministers led the Princely Mission to China this October. In total over 350 businesspeople joined them on this economic mission that boasted the admirable aim of coming back with at least 40 new China-Belgium ventures.

Last year China invested over 8 billion dollars in Europe, of which a mere 0.7% or 57 million in our country. However, trade between the two countries connues to grow and went up to 22,1 billion dollars in 2010, a growth of almost one-third since 2009. Clearly there is business to be done with the Chinese, but what are the opportunies out there?

Walter Vermeeren of NOVA Relocaon joined the mission and was able to gain a beer view on the potenal and risks involved in working in or with China on a relocaon level. In the space of eight short days three main cies were visited: Beijing, Chongqing and Guanzhou.

With 1,3 billion people China clearly offers many opportunies, cies of over 10 million people are not unusual (Chongqing alone boasts 32 million inhabitants) and the Chinese are known to be hard working and highly educated.

A wealth of companies foster global ambions and Belgian names such as Delvaux and Volvo Cars Ghent have already been sold to Chinese owners. Opportunies abound for both inbound and outbound focused companies, and along with these, opportunies are opening up for the relocaon service providers also.

“Inbound China is challenging for the relocaon business: many providers are already in place in the main cies, and most of them are either a removal company or a real estate agent. This makes it very hard to start up or to gain market share for core DSP providers. The new cies that are sproung up in central China appear to offer the most opportunies, but they are not yet very aracve for Western investors, so if you’re aiming to start here you’ll need to look at the long-term possibilies rather than expecng results in the immediate future,” explains Walter Vermeeren.

“Outbound China looks easier at first sight, but there are a number of factors that require careful consideraon before leaping in head first. The Chinese sll see the USA as their primary external market for consumer goods, Africa on the other hand is considered a primary market for investment goods, and within Europe their focus is on London and Eastern Europe. Added to which Chinese businesses are not yet very willing to pay for services: the added value of services is not yet perceived as a priority.”

Belgium enjoys a very privileged posion at the heart of Europe and besides the obvious roles for our harbours and logiscs enterprises, Belgium is starng to play an important role as a ‘service provider’ to Chinese investors in Europe, due to its central locaon and presence of the European instuons. A direct contradicon of terms?

WINTER 2011

Many different materials and techniques may have passed through Avi Kenan’s hands during his illustrious career but his disncve style remains ever recognisable. Evocave and thought provoking, Avi’s work manages to touch the heart and soul of its audience through the deeper meaning it conveys. Neither personal message nor polical statement is shunned, but rather executed in the most elegant, flowing and original manner, rendering his work meless.

This year sees Avi’s 40th year as an arst and as he himself says “What beer me for a party? I try to organise something every 5 or 10 years, but 40 is prey special.” So who is this enigmac man that can count King Albert II, Prince Rainier of Monaco and the late Pope John Paul II as his patrons?

Avi was born in 1951 of Jewish-Spanish origins. He grew up in Israel and Avi’s star was firmly set towards sea as he trained to become an officer and engineer on passenger ships. Unfortunately life at sea turned out to be enrely the wrong choice for a young man who had spent his childhood and early adulthood breaking the mould they tried to set for him.

A few months were spent at the academy of art in Haifa as well as the Academy of Bat-Yam, but Avi felt they were trying to change him and he clashed wildly with the scholasc, arsc constraints that tried to influence the way he approached his art. It wouldn’t be long before he le to find his own way. This turned out to be rather a good decision: aged just 25 he was the very first arst to enjoy a solo exhibion at the Bat-Yam museum, filling over 2000m² with his statues.

“My biggest compliment came from an old teacher of mine; he was incredibly jealous of my success. It was reason enough for me to leave school once and for all.”

It wouldn’t be long before Avi’s talent was noced overseas and exhibions in the Netherlands followed in 1978. “I sold every single last one of the statues I exhibited, I was on a real high,” he smiles, “but I found myself abroad with money in my pocket (a very rare thing for an arst) and no works of art le for the next exhibion. I needed to create new ones.”

“On the way back from the second exhibion in the Netherlands we passed through Turnhout by chance and immediately fell in love with the town and its people. Turnhout became our new home as it was near the foundry that cast my bronzes. My first son Omri was born in Turnhout and we always felt at home here. There is something about the place. Of course it wasn’t easy starng out in a new country, especially as we didn’t speak the language, and if I’m honest I sll don’t really, but everyone made us feel so very welcome and we came to make some very dear friends indeed.”

A move to Brussels would come about and this is where Avi’s second son Royi was born. “Omri’s first word to me was ‘nog’ as he toddled into the kitchen holding out his milk bole. Royi presented me with his bole a few years later asking for ‘encore’... It was his first word to me also. What are the chances? I love this story, it shows not just how big our passion for life is, we always want to get the very most out of it, but illustrates perfectly our mullingual family life.”

Today Avi enjoys - an only marginally less hecc - life in Antwerp where he has become a firm favourite of the Stadsfeestzaal. To celebrate his career the directors of the Stadsfeestzaal have offered him a permanent space to exhibit works that span the last 40 years. Some of his most lauded statues are exhibited here, along with newer painngs.

Over 7million people visited the Stadsfeestzaal last year, and they are expecng even more visitors in the new year. For Avi this is the perfect way of reaching as broad an audience as possible. “I’ve always tried to stay away from galleries and museums,” he says. “I much prefer exhibing in public places, more than anything I want to share a message of peace, tolerance and love. I come from a country that is torn apart by conflict and it breaks my heart. Of course I need to sell work also, it is my job aer all and I live from my art, but sharing the message of peace is what drives and inspires me.”

A message that runs like a red line through his career as an arst; one of his most notable conceptual works was ‘United Europe’ which was exhibited at the European Parliament in 2004. Social awareness and a strong message are never far from Avi’s mind when creang his works, although more recently he has mellowed a bit, turning to fesve scenes and lover’s dances.

Would he ever leave the country he has come to call home? “It’s funny you should ask. I’ve never wanted to go anywhere else, I’ve always been so happy in Belgium, but only this morning my lady and I were talking about where else we’d like to live. I wouldn’t mind leaving the city behind for a change and living on a mountain somewhere. Tibet perhaps or somewhere equally rooted in nature and spirituality.”

“Perhaps subconsciously this is also why I’ve started painng more and casng less bronze. It feels lighter in every sense of the word. If possessions are the baggage you carry around with you, then statues have started weighing me down. I’d like to see myself becoming lighter, flying away in a balloon to that mountaintop somewhere...”

Avi Kenan’s exhibion at the Stadsfeestzaal opens on December 8th under the patronage of Mr Guy van Doosselaere, Honorary Consul General of Monaco in Belgium and Mr Rudy Van Eijsendeyk, Honorary Director of the Royal Zoo of Antwerp. “You can find the exhibion on the second floor next to the upstairs champagne bar and of course you are very, very welcome to come and visit.”

WINTER 2011

As you may have noced, some big changes have occurred within ABRA over the last few months. We have listened to your requests for more input into how the associaon is run and as result we have formed three commiees to help achieve the goals of our associaon.

We all benefit from a well organised and posive image of the relocaon market and as we value your input as members we invite you to play an acve role in the growth of our associaon.

Our Full Members are invited to join Eric Klitsch, Marc Van Hoof and Chrisan Culot in our Relocaon Commiee. If you’d like to play an acve part in promong relocaon as an industry, help nurture the recognion of ABRA, naonally and internaonally, and play a part in advising our members on legal compliance, then this is the commiee for you. Training days, informaon sessions and more are to be organised in collaboraon with EARP and any issues you may face or quesons that arise for you as Belgian relocaters can be discussed with Anita Meyer as the Benelux representave for EuRA.

Of course we are much more than ‘just’ our relocaon members and if you’re an Affiliate or Local Member your input is just as important to us as any other member’s. ABRA is a non-profit organisaon and we exist solely on membership fees, adversements in this magazine and on our website. In order to connue to grow as a professional body and ensure financial connuity, we need to aract new members on a regular basis. Not only will you be able to extend your personal and professional networks, you will play a major role in ensuring the relocaon industry is represented in all relevant market segments, ranging from accommodaon to ayurvedic medicine.

Quesons such as how to offer further added value and return on investment to ABRA members are central to our Membership Commiee and the ideas you iniate will be put forward to the ABRA Board and of course our Events Commiee for those all important guest speakers.

Our Events Commiee currently comprises Dave Deruyer, Kurt Mellaerts, Marijke Verboven and Frank Billingsley. They are in charge of organising Board Meengs, Member Meengs (locaon, sponsor and guest speakers) and all other events, such as the recent Vlerick event, coordinang with Admin so that events run smoothly. Your ideas and input are very welcome and all of our Members are invited to join this commiee.

ABRA has grown from a small group of industry insiders to become the professional body of standing that anyone with an interest in internaonal mobility turns to. We hope that you will work together with us to promote the relocaon industry in Belgium and call on you to parcipate in pung Belgium on the map.

The sharing of ideas with fellow-parcipants, some with big successes and many with important failures, delivers an excellent insight in just a short week.”

“Small and medium sized Belgian enterprises successfully set up businesses if they met the following condions: good advice from lawyers and accountants, careful long term planning with no short term expectaons on profit, and the support of local Chinese governmental staff and businesspeople.

And on top of that: opmisc common sense. The old rule sll applies, when something is too good to be true, it is usually not true. But it should not stop us of thinking creavely about new markets and new services!”

The full 2011 Expat Explorer survey results were not yet available at me of going to print, but we can reveal a few inial findings from the largest global expat survey of its kind in the world.

This is the fourth year of the HSBC survey and despite some significant global events in the past year - from economic turmoil to widespread polical and social unrest - 3,385 expats from over 100 countries have taken part.

Top three countriesThis year’s number one country is Thailand when compared globally across economic and lifestyle factors, with Egypt and Saudi Arabia ranking second and third.

Seven new countries addedWhilst Bermuda did not make it into this year’s survey, 7 new countries have: Turkey, New Zealand, Brazil, Italy, Egypt, Vietnam & Japan, meaning that this year’s survey now covers 31 countries around the world.

Emerging trendsThe full results of the 2011 survey will be released in late November and will look at some new expat trends such as:• Despite the economic uncertainty in 2010, expats remain fairly opmisc about the economic outlook in the country where they live. Despite this opmism only 64% of expats intend to stay in their current country, compared to 87% in 2010.• The economic benefit of becoming an expat: in 2011 63% of expats report having more disposable income since relocang (compared to 56% in 2010)• Language barriers are becoming less problemac for expats with only 27% reporng this as an issue compared to 30% in 2010.• In 2011 expats are less concerned about feeling lonely and missing their friends and family, with only 31% reporng this in 2011, compared to 34% in 2010.

For the complete survey results please refer to www.expatexplorer.hsbc.com - full results should be published soon.

•NEW pre-kindergarten oponal programme

at St. John’s Internaonal School

What is a Dual Language Program?A Dual Language Program is one in which two languages are used for instrucon: English and, in our case, French. In our program, oen referred to as a 50/50 Two-Way Immersion model, 50% of instrucon will be provided by a French mother tongue teacher and 50% will be provided by an English mother tongue teacher, working together as a team.

Ideally, Dual Language Program classes will include equal numbers of English mother tongue and French mother tongue students. The students will be integrated during most of the day, allowing them to learn from each other as proficient peer models.

This model allows for addive bilingualism for all students, meaning that academic progress will be maintained in the first language while the student obtains proficiency in a second language. Our program will allow us to connue to fulfill our mission to provide an excellent English educaon, maintain our strong social and academic objecves, while delivering the added benefit of proficiency in French.
