Relocation of EMD type fuel pump motor in WDG4 Locos by IZN Diesel Shed , NE Railway

Ref:- DLW Design Bulletin no DB/02/2013/01 dated 26/02/2013.

• Brief History:

There has been large no failures of fuel pump motors in HHP locomotives. DLW

vide design bulletin no DB/02/2013/01 dated 26/02/2013 has suggested two

pronged strategies:-

• Long Term : Increase in Capacity of Inverter

• Immediate Action: Reduce the load of inverter by relocating fuel pump

motor so that load on account of suction pipe is reduced. DLW has also

mentioned that suction head on fuel line on new locomotive is approx.

11 inches against 5-6 inches recommended by OEM. This has direct

impact on current drawn by motor.

• Modification Details under taken by Action Taken by IZN Diesel Shed on

Loco No. 12715 WDG4 :

• Relocated EMD type fuel pump motor has been fitted 45 inch approx.

from fuel tank suction pipe towards engine L/H left side of the loco. [see

photographs in this report]

• Relocated FPM is mounted on four welded metallic blocks of size 1¼

inch diameter x ¾ inch height with ½ inch diameter bolts.

• Relocated fuel strainer has been fitted about 22 inch from fuel tank

suction pipe and mounted on three welded metallic blocks of size 1¼

inch diameter x ¾ inch height with 3/8 inch diameter bolts.

• Relocated suction pipe length has been reduced from 5 meter to 1 meter

(approx.)

• Relocated FPM delivery pipe is now being connected to original suction

pipeline.

• Electric supply connections which were 12 inches long in original

fitment has been increased to seven meters (approx.) for fitment to

relocated FPM. Additional length of wires have been joined and a sleeve

provided.

• Relocated FPM electric connections and copper pipelines have been

covered with metallic mesh sheet.

• Approx. 2 days for conversion.

Photograph of this modification is shown below-

• Result :

• Relocation of fuel pump motor has reduced current from 10 amps to approx. 4 amps.

• Future Plan :

• IZN diesel shed has made plan to this modification in 14 remaining locos by Oct, 2013.

• Material List :

• Wiring of approx. 7 meter length for connection from upper frame to relocated fuel pump in underframe

• Wire mesh is already provided in the underframe and fuel pump motor

• Metallic blocks of size ¾” X 1-1/4”- 4 nos. with ½” tapping for ½”bolts for mounting fuel pump motors

• Metallic blocks of size ¾” X 1-1/4”- 3 nos. with 3/8”” tapping for 3/8”bolts for mounting strainer
