FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT
@saintcabrini
Remain in me as I remain in you, says the Lord.
Whoever remains in me bears much fruit.
(Jn 15:4a, 5b)
“The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee named Nazareth,
to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s
name was Mary. Upon arriving, the angel said to her: ‘Rejoice, O highly favored
daughter! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women.’ She was deeply
troubled by his words, and wondered what his greeting meant. The angel went on to say
to her: ‘Do not fear, Mary. You have found favor with God. You shall conceive
and bear a son and give him the name Jesus. Great will be his dignity and he will be
called Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of David his
father. He will rule over the house of Jacob forever and his reign will be without end.’
Mary said to the angel, ‘How can this be since I do not know
man?’ The angel answered her: ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power
of the Most High will overshadow you; hence, the holy offspring to be born will be
called Son of God. Know that Elizabeth your kinswoman has conceived a son in her
old age; she who was thought to be sterile is now in her sixth month, for nothing is
impossible with God.’
Mary said: ‘I am the maidservant of the Lord. Let it be done to
me as you say.’ With that the angel left her.” (Luke 1: 26-38)

My Dear Sisters & Brothers in Christ,
The Gospel from Luke this weekend (Lk 1:26-38) is one that is very familiar to us. It is the story of Mary’s Annunciation when the angel appeared to her and revealed to her that she would conceive and bear a Son. Ask yourself: how do you think Mary reacted emotionally to the angel’s appearance and to the angel’s words that she would have a child, even though she had not “been” with a man? Luke says that Mary was extremely troubled at the angel’s news. She must have had many questions and concerns: What did all this mean? How was this to come about? What would she tell Joseph? Would he believe her? Yet somehow in the midst of her turmoil, Mary was able to trust God. And she freely consented to what God was asking of her. Mary must have had a deeply personal relationship with God. And it was this relationship that enabled her to trust and say “yes” to what God was asking her to do. Mary from a young age must have trusted God in all things. And thus, she would trust God even in this situation. Imagine the storm of emotions that this young Mary must have experienced! At times, life also presents us with difficult or painful situations that may stir up a storm of emotion in us. How do we respond? Do we get angry, fearful or anxious? Do we distance ourselves from God? Do we gradually come to believe that God is with us? Do we trust that God will guide and grace us? We have such a wonderful model in Mary, our spiritual mother. Like Mary, we need to keep ourselves grounded in the God we know, trust and love. If we do this, then we may believe and trust that we will receive the grace and strength we need. This will bring us peace. God will bring us peace! Ask Mary to pray for you! Peace, Prayers & All Good Things,
Fr. Charles

EVENTS, AND HOLY DAYS
Year of Saint Joseph With the Apostolic Letter “Patris Corde” (“With a Father’s Heart”), Pope Francis recalls the 150th anniversary of the declaration of Saint Joseph as
Patron of the Universal Church. To mark the occasion, the Holy Father has proclaimed a “Year of Saint Joseph”
from 8 December, 2020 to 8 December, 2021. VATICAN CITY (8 December 2020) - In a new Apostolic Letter
entitled Patris Corde (“With a Father’s Heart”), Pope Francis
describes Saint Joseph as a beloved father, a tender and loving
father, an obedient father, an accepting father; a father who is
creatively courageous, a working father, a father in the
shadows.
The Letter marks the 150th anniversary of Blessed Pope Pius
IX’s declaration of Saint Joseph as Patron of the Universal
Church. To celebrate the anniversary, Pope Francis has
proclaimed a special “Year of Saint Joseph,” beginning on the
Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, 2020 and extending
to the same Feast in 2021.
The Holy Father wrote Patris Corde against the backdrop of the
Covid-19 pandemic, which, he says, has helped us see more
clearly the importance of “ordinary” people who, though far
from the limelight, exercise patience and offer hope every day.
In this, they resemble Saint Joseph, “the man who goes
unnoticed, a daily, discreet and hidden presence,” who
nonetheless played “an incomparable role in the history of
salvation.”
Church grants plenary indulgence for Year of St. Joseph
The Apostolic Penitentiary also issued a decree granting special
indulgences for the duration of the Special Year to celebrate the
anniversary and “to perpetuate the entrustment of the whole
Church to the powerful patronage of the Custodian of Jesus.”
During this period, the faithful will have the opportunity to
commit themselves “with prayer and good works, to obtain,
with the help of Saint Joseph, head of the heavenly Family of
Nazareth, comfort and relief from the serious human and social
tribulations that besiege the contemporary world today.”
A Daily Prayer to Saint Joseph & a Challenge
In his letter, Pope Francis notes how, “Every day, for over forty
years, following Lauds [Morning Prayer]” he has “recited a
prayer to Saint Joseph taken from a nineteenth-century French
prayer book of the Congregation of the Sisters of Jesus and
Mary.” This prayer, he says, expresses devotion and trust, and
even poses a certain challenge to Saint Joseph,” on account of its
closing words: “My beloved father, all my trust is in you. Let it
not be said that I invoked you in vain, and since you can do
everything with Jesus and Mary, show me that your goodness is
as great as your power.”
At the conclusion of his Letter, he adds another prayer to Saint
Joseph, which he encourages all of us to pray together:
Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer,
Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
To you God entrusted his only Son;
in you Mary placed her trust;
with you Christ became man.
Blessed Joseph, to us too,
show yourself a father
and guide us in the path of life.
Obtain for us grace, mercy, and courage,
and defend us from every evil. Amen.

Diaper Drop Helps More Than 200 Children
Many thanks to everyone who supported and participated
in Catholic Charities Diaper Drop this past week. Leidy
Rivas, director of Culture of Life for Catholic Charities, said
the Dec. 11th event drew 168 families and reached 260
children. The goal of Walking With Moms In Need is to
accompany pregnant and parenting women. Families
received diapers, lotion, laundry detergent, blankets, and
women’s hygiene products. Parishes throughout the
Diocese joined the efforts by sending in diapers and
hand-knitting caps for newborns. The labor of love added
a personal touch during a difficult season.
