Sermon - 13 October 2013 by Bruce McCallumTRANSCRIPT
REMARKABLE PEOPLE, REMARKABLE PLACE
Philippians 1:1-2 (NRSV) 1 Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all the saints
in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the bishops and deacons: 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and
the Lord Jesus Christ.
Philippians 1:1-2 (MSG) 1 Paul and Timothy, both of us committed servants of Christ
Jesus, write this letter to all the Christians in Philippi, pastors and ministers included. 2 We greet you with the
grace and peace that comes from God our Father and our Master, Jesus Christ.
1. The place was remarkable
Acts 17:26 (NIV) 26 From one man he made every nation of men, that
they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact
places where they should live.
2. The person was remarkable
“Paul and Timothy”
1 Corinthians 4:15 (NKJV) 15 For though you might have ten thousand instructors
in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers …
3. The people were remarkable
Acts 16:14 (ESV) 14 One who heard us was a woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple goods, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to pay
attention to what was said by Paul.
Acts 16:15 (NIV) 15 When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. "If you consider me a believer in the Lord," she said, "come and stay
at my house." And she persuaded us.
3. The people were remarkable
Acts 16:16-18 (NIV)16 Once when we were going to the place of prayer,
we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling ….. Finally Paul became so troubled that he turned around and
said to the spirit, "In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!" At that moment
the spirit left her.
3. The people were remarkable
Acts 16:29-30 (NIV) 29 The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell
trembling before Paul and Silas. 30 He then brought them out and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be
saved?"
Matthew 4:17 (NIV) 17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, "Repent,
for the kingdom of heaven is near.“
Ephesians 2:19 (TLB) 19 Now you are no longer strangers to God and
foreigners to heaven, but you are members of God’s very own family, citizens of God’s country, and you
belong in God’s household with every other Christian.
John 13:35 (NIV) 35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if
you love one another.“
John 13:35 (TLB) 35 Your strong love for each other will prove to the
world that you are my disciples.“
John 13:35 (NJB) 35 It is by your love for one another, that everyone will
recognise you as my disciples.
"I don’t need a Church" is nonsense. You can’t love Christ & not his Body, the King ¬ his Kingdom, the Father & not his
Family
Telling Jesus "I love u but don’t need your church" is like telling your wife "I love u but don’t need your Body. Fake love.”
There are two things we cannot do alone. One is to be married; the other is to be a Christian.
"A follower of Jesus disconnected from a local church family is an orphan."
4. The purpose was remarkable
5. The preamble is remarkable
“To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the bishops and deacons”
6. The cause is remarkable
Acts 28:30-31 (NIV) 30 For two whole years Paul stayed there in his own
rented house and welcomed all who came to see him. 31 Boldly and without hindrance he preached the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus
Christ.
