+STEWART, John Australian Infantry, 4th Btn. Private. Died 01/05/1915. John was the son of Robert and Isabella Stewart. He was born on 18/11/1889 in Hervey Hill, Tamlaght O’Crilly, Kilrea. They were a farming family. John ‘Jack’ Stewart emigrated to Australia about 1912. Prior to enlisting, Jack was working as a motor driver and was living in Newtown, New South Wales. VETERANS

BACON, James

Gunner, Royal Naval Reserve. Jim volunteered for active service in the Winter of 1915 (aged about 24 years), and ships served in included HMS Albemarle, a battle cruiser. Before the war he was a fisherman. His parents, Mr. James (fisherman) and Mrs. Catherine (Kate) McComb Stirling Bacon, lived at Crescent View, Portstewart. James was living at Heathmount when he died on 01/05/1960. His remains were buried in Agherton Cemetery. He is commemorated on the Roll of Honour in Agherton Parish Church.

FALLIS, David Samuel George

Davey from Enniskillen was born in 1911 and enlisted in the Royal Armoured Corps, North Irish Horse at Omagh on 01/05/1940.

Following his Basic Training he joined his Regiment in Portrush where they were involved in Coastal Defence duties using armoured cars and reconnaissance vehicles. Davey met his wife to be in Portrush.

Having become an Infantry Tank Unit, training began in July 1941 with the Valentine Tank before they moved to England and were equipped with Churchill tanks.

Davey met his wife to be in Portrush and they were married there in1941.

In 1943 the Regiment was part of 25 Tank Brigade and joined the First Army in Tunisia where they soon saw action culminating in being the first tanks into Tunis on 8th May 1943.

In April 1944 the Regiment joined 8th Army in Italy with their first action in support of 1 Canadian Infantry Division in a frontal attack on the Hitler Line. North Irish Horse lost 36 Officers and Men with 36 wounded and the loss of 32 tanks. Their action was recognised by the Canadians who asked that the Regiment wear a Maple Leaf on their uniform.

Davey survived the war and passed away at the age of 92 in October 2003.

On this day - May 11915

L/Cpl Walter Parker RMLI was awarded the VC for his actions in the trenches at Gaba Tepe in Gallipoli. He displayed conspicuous bravery and energy under fire whilst in charge of the Battalion stretcher bearers.

At the 2nd Battle of Ypres the German attack on Hill 60 is repulsed. The British are ordered to withdraw to a new defensive line.

1916

At the Battle of Verdun the French have success at Fort Douaumont.

1917 - 1918

Between May 1917 and May 1918 more than 300,000 people used the tube to shelter from German air raids. That was double the amount of people that were regularly sheltering in the tube during the height of the London Blitz in September 1940.

1918

American troops arrive at the Amiens front.

1942

Destroyer HMS Punjabi was rammed by HMS King George V in the Arctic Ocean after turning into the battleship’s path to avoid a possible mine. Punjabi was cut in two and sank with the loss of 49 men.

1945

38 (Irish) Brigade - Brigadier Scott: “On 1st May 1945, the New Zealander Division linked up with Marshal Tito’s forces at Monfalcone, NW of Trieste. I had always imagined that linking up with allies is a rather dramatic moment but found out later that it was not quite the sort of thing I imagined.”

Fr Dan Kelleher visited the old battlefields about San Clemente and found the remains of 3 London Irish lads, who had been reported missing during a patrol to Tamagnin in January: Rifleman Timothy O’Mara, South Acton Rifleman Henry Jordan, Rifleman Joseph Foley, Bolton

Two remaining German Tiger II tanks from schwere Panzerabteilung 503 took up positions at the Reichstag, destroying over 30 Soviet tanks.
