JANUARY MEETING ENTERTAINMENT A reminder that there are no club meetings in December … EXCEPT FOR THE HOLIDAY PARTY, so please come to that !! Our January meeting has been pushed back a week to January 10 due to holiday conflicts. Our program for the January meeting will be presented by our own Den-nis Hocker, who has been diving in our NorCal waters with Aqua Tutus since 1960. He’s still an active diver and instructor, and knows the usual … and some less-known … dive sites better than most. This program should be particularly good for newer divers … as well as those who have been diving Monterey for years. There’s always more to learn from Dennis! Please come to the meeting and enjoy and learn from Dennis’s program.

ENTERTAINMENT REPORT (photo credits: from presentations, except where noted),
By Gayle Hudson
Members Night - Land and Sea
Our second Members Night of 2018 featured presenta-tions by Fritz Welss, Jono Dove, and Patti Baugh.
The presentations began with a video of Palau we incor-rectly credited to Larry Muth; we’ll have to see Wakatobi
at a future date. However, we enjoyed beautiful scenes of Palau, but just don’t know who should receive cred-it. Oops. After the warm, clear waters of Palau, Fritz Welss took us to Monterey with videos of the marine life we love to see on our local dives.
Jono Dove showed a slide show from a trip he, Dennis, and Patti made to Papua New Guinea. He explained that, while the people were known to the Western world for centuries, the two million+ people who lived in the highlands were not known and this was the region they toured. The highland people went undetected until they were ‘discovered’ by Australians looking for gold in the 1930s, and 852 known spoken languages have been identified among the the people of this region.
They stayed at Ambua Lodge in the Tari area and visit-ed with several different tribes. They visited a small tribe where the men performed a spirit dance, normally performed at night, to call positive spirits to the village and ward off evil spirits. Ceremonial costumes include extensive use of bird feathers, wings, beaks, bones, and quills. This region, the Mount Hagen area, is the bread basket of Papua New Guinea - similar in productivity to the California Central Valley.
Traditionally, men and women live separately in Papua New Guinea. Women raise children, pigs, and tend to the farm while men protect the village and hunt. Polyga-my is alive and well in this culture and dowries are still used today, with a bride price set by a council of elders (the bride price got out of hand during the mid-20th cen-tury and no one could afford to get married).
In the mid 1900s, evangelical missionaries came to the
highlands; hence the landscape is dotted with church-
es. Locals are certain to share their historical and ancient culture, all the while reassuring guests that they are now Christians.
Papua New Guinea's cash crop is palm oil. Vast swaths of the rain forest in the lowlands have been clear-cut in order to make more room for this product. Palm fruit is harvested every two weeks, with each tree producing sev-eral tons of fruit that may be pressed for oil. The material left over from pressing is used in biomass energy genera-tion. Jono’s photos showed a culture still rich in tradition but coming to terms with modern influences, like cell phones.
Patti Baugh finished the presentations with a show-stopping selection of slides featuring clownfish and crusta-ceans. The main subjects would project out of the field, often with a black background, making the subject appear almost three dimensional. The transition from slide to slide was about as magical, yet did not distract from the subject. Patti uses Pro Show Gold to perfection!
Members Night once again showcased the talent in our club and gave many of us inspiration as we think about our photography efforts, both below and above the water.

In Memoriam
Rick Carlsen
Editors note: Rick & Maartje Carlsen were active mem-bers of Aqua Tutus from about 1992, when they took the Open Water certification class, until about 1998 when Rick retired and they spent their summers on the Co-lumbia River where Rick grew up. They were excellent divers, enjoying the challenging but beautiful and prolific waters that Northern California offers, and good friends. They continued to dive with the club on several warm-water trips through about 2003 when they purchased a summer home in that area and their first grandchild was born. Maartje particularly remembers a club trip to Bon-aire and Curacao and her first experience with a tarpon named Charlie at Captain Don’s Habitat! She now lives in their home in Sunnyvale. She welcomes calls and vis-its from club members. Her reflections follow: On September 21, 2018, just 6 days short of his gold-en wedding anniversary, Rick passed away at the age of 82. Older club members may remember Rick, who joined the club in 1992 and enjoyed diving until 2003. Rick was raised on a floathouse along the Columbia River in a community of Norwegian immigrants, mostly fishermen. As a teenager he spent a year in Norway, where he perfected his knowledge of the Norwegian lan-guage. During his 3 1/2 years of military service in Germany he became fluent in German, which he later taught at a high school in Bend, Oregon. In 1966 he moved to the Netherlands to work for IBM, where he met Maartje, who also worked for IBM. In 1968 they married and the next year they moved to Cali-fornia, where Rick worked for 30 years as a technical writer for various computer companies. Rick was an avid collector and restorer of electric model trains. The cremation has taken place in private. Rick is sur-vived by his wife, son John, daughter Sonja and two grandchildren. An informal memorial get-together will take place at some time in the future.

Zeagle BCD recall (Thanks to Helga; from current issue of Undercurrent )
Zeagle Recalls Five Types of BCs https://www.zeagle.com/sport-bcd-inflator-recall
Zeagle is recalling five models of its Sport BCs because buttons on the direct-feed inflator and/or the oral inflation valve can break or fracture while in use, leading to either loss of air or uncontrolled inflation of the BC, which could cause a diver to drown . The Consumer Product Safety Commission states 23 reports of buttons breaking, but no injuries so far. This recall is for the models Sport Base, Sport Resort, Sport Base Plus, Sport Resort Plus and Sport Focus. Around 2,600 of the Sport BCs for recall are in the U .S, and another 800 in Canada . (None were sold in Europe because they didn’t meet the required safety standards.) If you own one of these BCs, stop using it and either call
Zeagle at 888-270-8595, or visit a reg- istered dealer for instructions on how to receive a free replacement (www.zeagle.com/sport-bcd- inflator-recall)
From the website: Zeagle Recalls Sport BCD Inflators Due to Automatic Inflation Hazard
Zeagle is issuing an important recall regarding inflators on Zeagle Sport BCDs. There exists a possibility that buttons on inflators of Zeagle Sport BCDs purchased between August 1, 2015 and Au-gust 31, 2018, may break or fracture leading to a rapid loss of air or auto inflation of the BCD. It is of the utmost importance that if you have a Sport BCD with an inflator that is affected by this recall, that the inflat-or be replaced as soon as possible. While no incidents have occurred related to this product recall, the possibility of an incident does exist. We strongly recommend that dealers and end users take all necessary precautions when dealing with life support equipment.
NEXT STEPS: WHAT TO DO IF YOU BELIEVE YOU HAVE A PRODUCT AFFECTED BY THIS RECALL
Do not use the affected product(s). Determine if you have an affected product by going to the website below and following the provided instructions. Al-ternatively, you can bring your product into your nearest authorized Zeagle Dealer.
https://www.zeagle.com/sport-bcd-inflator-recall Please let any of your fellow divers who may be using an affected product know about this recall. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your cooperation in supporting Zeagle regarding this matter. Sincerely, Zeagle
