Reminder to wear the green school uniform on Fridays.

You would be aware of the retirement of our Bishop, Father Brian. We have been blessed indeed to have enjoyed his leadership of our Diocese over the past 22 years. Father Brian has always been keenly interested in the progress and well-being of our College. Please remember the chance to say thank you and good-bye on Monday 4 November. Our Diocese is now being run by a Diocesan Administrator, Father John Grace, who will remain in the role until a new Bishop is appointed. Father John is a wonderful man and we congratulate him on his appointment to this role and assure him of the support of The Cathedral College. PARENTS AND FRIENDS ASSOCIATION This group conducted their AGM last night and the executive elected was: PRESIDENT: Mrs Marie Gorman VICE-PRESIDENT: Mr Bruce Gorle SECRETARY: Mrs Michelle Silver TREASURER: Mrs Loretta Williams Thank you for agreeing to take on these roles for 2014. I must mention outgoing President, Mr Bruce Gorle, who has held this role since 2010. Bruce has been a tremendous driving force in this organisation and he really cannot be thanked enough for his service. I am sure this will continue as he moves to the Vice-President’s role. ON THE WEEK-END

Forty students took part in the TCC Rowing “Come and Try” Day. Thank you Mr Stevenson and rowing coaches for your involvement here.

Our two Opti-Minds teams competed in the State titles in Brisbane and performed very well. Thank you Miss Wishart and Mr Coughlan for your work with these teams.

At the Queensland All Schools Touch Titles also in Brisbane, our 13 Years Mixed team was placed third in Queensland and the Open Boys team was placed in the top 8. The teams were coached by Miss Elisha Steffen (Mixed) and Mr Mick Steffen (Open). My thanks to them.

CULTURAL AWARDS EVENING The Awards “season” begins next Tuesday 22 October at 5.30pm in the Multi-Purpose Centre. Quite a number of students will be receiving awards in recognition of their work in the cultural dimension of the College. The evening will conclude by 6.30pm. Mr Rob Alexander

Term 4 is well under way and I encourage all families to keep the dates published here and on the calendar in mind as we have many events on in the next month. A reminder that Monday 21 October is a Student Free Day with no students expected to be at school. State wide teachers will be involved in the verification (comparing the standard) of Year 12 work. Those staff not involved in the Queensland Studies Authority panels will be attending Professional Development opportunities here at TCC to ensure we continue to improve the quality of teaching we offer here at TCC. Next Wednesday morning we have arranged a very special event for the Year 12 students in which the Emergency Services and other key personnel will highlight to our graduates the consequences of dangerous driving. This is a powerful session which hopefully will prevent these horrors becoming a reality. Bullarama Breakup BBQ – Saturday 26 October at TCC at 6pm. Mr Gerard Raven From the ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL: STUDIES ASSESSMENT CALENDARS: A reminder to all parents and students. Assessment calendars for term four will be available on the College Web Page this week. To access this important document, go to the ‘Curriculum’ tab. This calendar will assist you, as parents, in knowing when you son or daughter has assignments due and exams scheduled.

AWARDS NIGHT: The annual TCC Awards Night is on the 1 November. Parents, guardians and friends wishing to attend the Awards Night will need to obtain a ticket from the Pilbeam Theatre Box Office in order to receive a seating allocation. Please note that award and medal recipients will have reserved seating.

YEAR 11 PARENTS: As a new initiative, there is a parent information session relating to the Queensland Core Skills Test (QCS) on Thursday 17 October. Your son or daughter will sit the QCS Test, as a Year 12 student, in 2014. The session will commence at 5.30pm and conclude by 6.30pm. This aim of this session is to explore the nature, mode, and elements of the QCS Test. I look forward to the pleasure of your attendance.

YEAR 12 EXAM BLOCK: The Year 12 Exam Block will run from Thursday 7 November to Tuesday 12 November. The Year 12 Exam Timetable will be published later this week. The starting time for Session 1 is 8.35am and Session 2 is 12.10pm. Students must be present at least ten minutes prior to the commencement of the exam session with all the required equipment for that particular exam.

As this is the last assessment for students in Year 12, all exams will run as per the published exam timetable. There will be no variation to this schedule. Attendance at required sessions is essential to finalise your son or daughters results for 2013.

TAX FILE NUMBER: Students are encouraged to apply for a tax file number (TFN) through the College. A TFN is essential for employment, deferring university fees or applying for Centrelink benefits. Students will need a TFN number when they leave school; it is much simpler to apply through the school tax file number program. Please visit the College office to collect the required paperwork for your son or daughter to apply for their TFN. To ensure students get their TFN before Christmas, completed application forms must be received in the Australian Taxation Office by 22 November 2013.

God Bless Mr Andrew Stein From the ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL: MISSION

Farewell for Fr Brian: As mentioned last week, Fr Brian has retired as Bishop of the Diocese of Rockhampton. We will have an opportunity to farewell Fr Brian on Monday 4 November with an afternoon tea from 3.30-4.30 and a Mass followed by supper at 6pm. We hope to have a very good representation from TCC at this Mass to thank Fr Brian for his contribution to the life of TCC over his time as Bishop.

Thursday morning Mass: Thursday morning Mass is at 8am in the Daily Mass Chapel at the Cathedral. Tomorrow’s Mass will be led by Q/SC and Q/PD with a special invitation to Year 10 students. Next week will be Q/RC and Q/SM with Year 11 students invited. TCC/Parish Mass: Come along and celebrate our last TCC/Parish Mass for 2013. 6pm THIS Saturday 19 October at St Joseph’s Cathedral. St Vincent de Paul Giving Tree: The annual St Vincent de Paul Christmas Giving Tree Appeal is on again this year and we are being asked to be generous in our support of the Appeal to help make a difference in the lives of others less fortunate. Every student has been asked to bring along something to place on the Giving Tree at the last Senior Assembly on 25 October. Some ideas for gifts are: gifts for children/young people, gift cards from various retailers including Woolworths and Coles, money, non-perishable Christmas produce such as Christmas cakes, Christmas puddings, bags of chips, bottles of softdrink etc. Prayers and blessings

CAREERS – WORK EXPERIENCE

Year 10 student, Shaeleigh West may never be in the predicament of what hat to wear to the races if she continues her interest in millinery. The Fashion Design and Art student spent three days of her Work Experience with the internationally recognized hat maker, Wendy White and her team from Rockhampton’s Bush Buddies. “The ladies from Bush Buddies were very good. They took interest in me, taught me and encouraged me,” “I definitely want to pursue a career in fashion. This experience confirmed it for me,” she said. And although Shaeleigh is not sure when her hat will get its first outing she is certain she will keep it as the first of many she creates.
