Remote Amplifiers for Capacitive SensorsAdvanced functionality and flexibility
Typically, standard capacitive sensors are in M12 to M30 tubular
housings, yet smaller form factors are necessary when trying to
precisely detect small parts or in space-restricted applications. To
address these needs, Balluff offers a wide variety of sensor types,
including an exclusive line of small capacitive sensors that can be
calibrated remotely using a separate amplifier.
Balluff’s capacitive sensor amplifiers provide functionality and
capabilities not offered by other industrial capacitive sensor
manufacturers. With over 30 different sensor heads, challenging
applications can be solved reliably including precision sensing, high
temperature, carbon fiber molding, and level control.
Remote Amplifiers for Capacitive SensorsAdvanced flexibility and functionality
Three amplifier models are available:
Standard
■ Provides discrete on/off control used in most general applications
■ Output is completely configurable by using the white wire -
PNP/NPN, NO/NC
■ Setup is easy with a 20-turn potentiometer
■ Multiple LED’s for sensor status and diagnostics - power on, NPN
selected, NC selected, output function, error for missing sensor
head or bad sensor cable
■ Easy connection with either a 2m cable or M12 pigtail connector
■ Easy mounting with standard DIN rail
■ Transparent cover for controls and LED’s
Advanced
Provides all the functionality of the standard version plus:
■ Current or voltage analog output in lieu of a discrete output
■ Two color 7-segment digital display for menu item and numerical
value
■ Programming buttons
■ Available operating modes:
– Standard discrete on/off control mode
– Analog output mode - No other manufacturer of standard
capacitive sensors offers this ability. Applications include dynamic
level control and part in position.
– 2 point switching mode
– Window mode
– Dynamic mode
– Special function (pump) mode
■ External triggering
■ On/Off switching delay
Provides all of the functionality of the advanced (comfort) version plus:
■ IO Link communication for parameterization, error free re-calibration,
faster troubleshooting and reduced downtime
■ SIO mode – without the IO Link master the amplifier acts like a
standard amplifier after configuration with IO-Link
■ Connection via M12 pigtail connector

Operating Modes
Standard Switching mode
Provides standard on/off control e.g. the output changes state based
on the adjustment of the sensitivity pot (one defined switch point).
The sensing range is dependent on the sensor head being used. The
output will turn off when the object is out of range.
Two-Point Switching
Separate defined switch points, Switch Point 1 for the output to switch
state and Switch Point 2 for the output to return to the normal state.
The hysteresis is limited by the switch point configuration.
Window Function
Output is actuated when the sensor is within the separate Switch
Points 1 and 2. The standard hysteresis is in effect with this switching
function.
Dynamic Operation
Output changes state only to fast movement within the sensing
range of the sensor. If an object or background does not move, the
amplifier ignores it. This mode is similar to a background suppression
photoelectric sensor.
External Triggering
Utilized to set the Set Point 1 or High Limit and Set Point 2 or the Low
Limit. The feature uses the white wire and has three states. State one
is open thus disabling the external triggering function. State 2 connects
the white wire to positive voltage enabling the ability to teach Set Point
1 or the High value. Finally, State 3 connects the white wire to negative
enabling the ability to teach Set Point 2 or the Low value.
Special (Pump) Function
Requires two amplifiers and two sensor heads. Sensor/amplifier one
controls the minimum level and sensor/amplifier two controls the
maximum level.
Output On-Delay
Delays the output up to 65 seconds (in 10msec increments) before
turning on.
Output Off-Delay
Delays the output up to 65 seconds (in 10msec increments) after
turning off.

Remote Amplifiers for Capacitive SensorsAdvanced flexibility and functionality
Remote capacitive amplifiers provide flexibility and benefits not offered
with self-contained sensors. This includes precisely detecting small
parts in space limited machines or robot end of arm effectors and
allowing the remote teaching of set points and output configuration.
A standard capacitive amplifier offers basic discrete on/off control with
additional diagnostics for ease of troubleshooting and setup.
The advanced (Comfort) amplifier provides functionality previously not
available in any type of capacitive sensor. Especially interesting is the
ability to have an analog output from a standard capacitive for level
control or positioning. Other functionality includes two-point switch,
window mode, and dynamic mode.

The sensor has a programming wire
(white) that can be used to configure
the output. The cable is open in
configuration mode. This status is
displayed by the LED ERR by flashing.
After each potential transition of the
programming wire from
open to positive voltage, the switching
output configuration is indexed forward
a variant each time:
PNP, NO PNP, NC NPN,
NO NPN,
NC PNP, NO, etc.
With the advanced version the white
wire is used to dynamically make set
point changes. High and low set points
can be changed by applying positive
voltage or by grounding.

CD/DVD production: Checking stack height
During CD/DVD production, capacitive sensors monitor the stacks of
CDs and DVDs on a spindle. As soon as the maximum stack height
is reached, the sensor sends a message that allows the finished
stack to be transported further to end packaging and the next empty
spindle to be prepared. And it does this with absolute reliability,
without allowing itself to be influenced by the reflective surface.

detection of liquid, paste-like or powdery media at high temperatures
up to 250 °C. To withstand such extreme conditions, the housing of
the high-temperature rated sensors is made of stainless steel and the
sensor heads of PTFE. The sensors are also used with a special Triax

Sensors in UsePaper and printing industry: Stack height control in sheet-feed offset printing
Integrated in printing, folding and bookbinding machines, capacitive
sensors not only check stack height, but also provide for perfect
stacking of the papers, so that there is as little waste as possible
during further processing.
Despite a dirty environment (due to paper dust and anti-set-off
spray powder), the sensor works perfectly. Laterally or from above,
it measures stack heights even in small increments, and raises and
lowers the stack as soon as it recognizes its height.
In the paper cutting machine, the capacitive sensor also measures
the width of the stack to be cut, so that the cutting pressure of the
cutting knife can be set in relation to it. In doing so, it proves to be not
only insensitive to dust, but also completely uninfluenced by different
colors of paper.

Capacitive Sensors for Object DetectionSensors in use
Application:
Level detection of liquid media In test-
tubes
Benefits:
Analysis devices are often very compact,
so there is little space for sensors.
Miniature capacitive sensors are suitable
for small space designs.
Application:
A capacitive level sensor detects the level
of powder through a glass storage tank
wall.
Benefits:
Powder residues causing adherence
on the inner tank wall are compensated
by the capacitive sensor. The complete
active surface of the sensor covers the
outer tank wall.
Application:
Transportation control of wafers in a
wafer etching plant
Benefits:
■ The capacitive sensors can be
completely integrated in a robot arm.
■ Enables robot application designs
to accommodate for constrictions
caused by small space available in
the wafer carrier box.
Application:
A capacitive sensor detects the fill level
of soldering paste in the cartridge of a
dispenser in a screen printing machine.
The dispenser doses the soldering
paste on to a pattern or on to a screen
for PCB printing purposes.
Benefits:
Soldering paste residues on the
inner wall of the cartridge can be
compensated by capacitive sensors.
Application:
Detecting paper stack on a paper
processing machine
■ Detection from above or side.
■ Sensor detects stack height and
generates a signal, when the max.
height is reached
Benefits:
Paper processing environment (i.e. paper
dust and spray powder) has no influence
on sensor function.
