6 — Centralian Advocate, Friday, August 16, 2013 Remote jobs program is rolling off the rails Letters to the Editor PO BOX 2254, 2 GAP ROAD, ALICE SPRINGS FAX: 8950 9740 [email protected] The Federal Labor Government’s Indi- genous employment program is in dis- array just weeks after it started. Labor Member for Lingiari Warren Snowdon visited Amoonguna, an indi- genous community near Alice Springs, earlier this week and found out first hand that Labor’s Remote Jobs and Communi- ties Program (RJCP) has failed to pro- vide services to Amoonguna despite the fact it was meant to be rolled out from July 1. Amoonguna had the highest number of jobseekers in the Alice Springs district — 77 as at January 2013 — but they have been left high and dry by Warren Snow- don and Labor. RJCP has been bungled by Labor since day one. Contracts were meant to be announced in December but many were only revealed a few weeks before the program was due to start, leaving job service providers scrambling to provide support for job seekers. Labor’s abysmal handling of RJCP meant the Government had to extend the transitional arrangements from the old Community Development Employ- ment Project. There is no performance management system in place meaning that RJCP contracts have been awarded and fund- ing dispensed, with no way of knowing how the money is being spent and how many indigenous jobseekers are being employed. You can’t trust Labor to roll out programs properly — the pink batts and school halls disasters are prime examples of how Labor does things and RJCP can be added to that list of failures. A lesson in medialaw and rightsTHE Centralian Advocate takes the educat-

ion, development and protection of the

children of this region seriously.

It is not only this newspaper’s desire but

also its responsibility to provide the com-

munity with an insight into what is happen-

ing in our schools — both the positive

outcomes and the areas where there is

potential or need for improvement.

All media are bound by laws which deter-

mine how we must obtain stories and images

and these laws are strong with regards to

the identification of children and taking

comment from minors in all settings, but

particularly in our education facilities.

The Centralian Advocate respects and

abides by these laws.

They are welcomed as they also offer

protection to our staff.

While much of media law relates only to

the publication of material and not the

collection, respect, courtesy and common

sense is used at the coal face.

Media outlets are not required by any law

to pre-announce their arrival at a public

school and have the right to walk on to the

property or interact over the fence, talk to

adults, observe and note activities and even

capture footage

This being so, it is not a common practice

and certainly not an encouraged one at the

Centralian Advocate.

It is our policy to seek out the school

principal when we enter a school and we see

it as that leader’s responsibility to instruct,

direct or reject our approach.

This approach is in line with media law,

common law and decency while still giving

us opportunity to report stories which are in

the public interest.
